Like art history? We’ve come full circle.
Let’s see if you can complete the sentence.
Society would be better off without collegiate sports because…
I’m not so extreme one way or the other. I think college sports has a lot of benefits as well as a lot of problems. Your post just seemed so extreme that it’s was unclear to me if you were trying to use hyperbole or just actually believe that college sports is beyond criticism.
Sorry, I meant to reply to @zecarlo, who is the only one with an extreme position.
Recognizing the broad benefits of student athletics doesn’t mean I believe they are above reproach.
Professional sports are subsidized too…
I am sure this can easily be found on line and it varies.
There is definitely a cutoff for which teams make money. I would venture to guess all Division 1A schools for football operate in the black.
Football and basketball are the money makers - the rest often lose money from my understanding.
I went to Iowa State at a time when we were one of the top wrestling programs in the country - maybe a few hundred people attended the meets compared to a packed arena for our less than stellar mens basketball team. It boggled my mind, but I understand the bigger programs keep the smaller sports afloat.
College wrestling Deserves to be subsidized.
Definitely,
Wrestling & Gymnastics >> Soccer, tennis, baseball, Track
Yeah, unlimited resources to the soccer girls too.
I think you misspelled Volleyball*.
No arguments here.
What does society have to do with it? Society would be better off with lots of things, but do you want to pay for them?
With that said, college sports aren’t curing cancer, stopping terrorism, or paying my tenant’s overdue rent.
The WNBA isn’t really a sport.
I thought it was comedy?
Mainly in the form of tax breaks and money to build their billion-dollar facilities.
That doesn’t show football or basketball separated out. I am curious to see how many of those sports at D1 colleges run in the black.
All sports basically outside of those 2 at all colleges basically run huge deficits.
I don’t think much money trickles down to keep tuition low. The money football makes funds all of the other sports but not all football programs enough money to be self sufficient. Also, knowing how much waste their is at colleges when it comes to spending, there is probably a lot of bloat and creative accounting going on.
And backroom deals and payoffs. Collegiate sports are about prestige to lure students.
I didn’t think that was ever a point anyone was making haha.
Tuition skyrocketed due to guaranteed federal loans - not athletics. Anywhere there is a ton of money - there is going to be gross waste and bloat. Look at government at every level as well.
