Why not use both.
I should rewatch that movie. Cool about Billy Mills though.
I was more referring to the few characters in history books. Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, guys like that. I donāt think thereās really that many famous Natives from the last 100+ years unless you have some idea of what A.I.M. was and who some of their members were/are.
@zecarlo - Are you saying to just have both of the names on the signs?
In BC all the mountains, lakes, rivers, etc have the english name and the first nations name on the signs. In my neck of the woods lots of spots around Rainier use the native name Tahoma in their naming. If i say either Denali or McKinley you know im talking about a bigass volcano in AK.
Mountains out of molehills.
It is on YouTube for free. Ad blocker will be your friend if you go that route. Should be tolerable since there isnāt too much adult content. I tried watching Silence of the Lambs on YouTube, and those bastards censored many of the classic lines.
Its gonna be tough to remove bias anyway you teach itā¦especially at the elementary age where making a story out of facts keeps the kids entertained and engaged. Maybe the bias is just shifting away from where it was previously?
Kids today and back in the day conformed⦠to rebelling. Rebellion against the man, and the older generations sensibilities has always been a driving factor in young peoples pop culture⦠no different today. Its trendy to be a SJW that grinds against the the status quo.
I consider anyone under the age of 30 a āyoung personā for the sake of this conversation. Folks with families, careers, and real day to day busy-ass lives typically dont have time to champion causes like this. And i would argue kids in elementary school dont understand historical context without it being told to them (see bias). Kids in high school start to make that connection, and folks in college should be expected to make the connection. But young, idealistic early 20s folks with time to spare think they are going to change the world⦠as it has been for the previous umpteen generations.
Why not? I mean, it would be one name but two languages. Massachusetts is an Indian word but how many people know what it means? Itās just a word.

Yeah, I donāt have a problem with it, just wanted to clarify what you meant. Iām all for the idea.
What are these kids rebelling against? Slavery? How brave they are to go against something everyone is against⦠we even outlawed it, over a century ago. Itās not contrarian if everyone agrees. Are they standing up to the Man; the man being Lincoln? Heās dead so itās not like he can put up a fight.
By outlawing slavery? They need to go to the Middle East or Africa if thatās what they want.
the kids are rebelling against their parents, the status quo, the older generations sensibilities. An easy way to do that is rebel against the heroes from the past. Like you said, if they and their close relatives are dead, that famous person cannot put up a fight. Its edgy and cool to rebel against the normal, the establishment⦠the boring white guys from centuries past that have their name on everything. They are making a statement to the establishment that āyour heros are not actually herosā. They want to make a change in this world, but not have to work too hard or suffer to make that change. They might act like they are about that life, but they aināt about that life. IDK, the mindset just screams angsty teen/young person to me.
I am 100% going to steal this and use it.
This idiocy is a uniquely American thing unfortunately. And I really wish I could say it was some āshitholeā countryās thing, not ours.
Reaction against āhistory is written by the winnersā at work here? Or lopparās failed revolutionary method?
Disgusting either way. I cannot stand victim culture, which this sort of virtue signaling is intimately linked with.
Grow up and grow some brains.
Damnit youāre right. There goes that ālost faith in humanityā card again. I need to stop stocking up on those thingsā¦
Honestly, SkyzykS is responsible for a good proportion of uniquely worded retorts that I keep in my arsenal now lol.
Unfortunately true. I mean Huck Finn and almost every wisecrack heās ever had would run afoul of the cancel culture people. Iām 100% certain none of them have ever read him or theyād be so offended they might spontaneously combust.
My cousinās elementary school was changed from Mark Twain to Susan B. Anthony, like 10 years ago or so. Not sure if it was because of āhatredā for Twain or just wanting to acknowledge Anthony. I think it was actually the latterā¦from what I remember it wasnāt a very dramatic event.
Well sure, what did they gain, like 1500% value? Also, āweaponized autismā is now going in my retort bag.
And Rage is a fucking awesome band, politics be damned.
Iām not riled up about that in the least. But I am concerned about how far the race to be in-offensive has gone. Again it goes against the basic rule of analyzing history - donāt apply our current norms to a situation that was nothing like it. Being able to acknowledge that people in the past were great but imperfect is not the same as saying āwe canāt have our first presidents name on a schoolā.
If you donāt learn how to critically reason in school, where do you learn it? Youāre gonna be shit out of luck in the real world.
Actually, you might not be in this current world.
I donāt think thatās bad either. I feel strongly that this goes beyond that. Itās not āthese folks did some really good shit and some bad shit and were products of their time, holding to views that we know to be wrong nowā. That would be the whole story. I learned that in school myself.
This is different. I forget if it was loppar or someone else in a thread last year, but it was said that this was the new religion - only without any of the redemption, forgiveness, or other positive aspects of it. Make a mistake, no matter how long ago, and you will be punished. I mean FFS they even decided to change Feinsteinās name, whoās pretty much been completely progressive her entire political career, because of a single incident (reportedly).
Definitely agree. I still think Latin should come back (outside scientific terms) lol. As a history buff I do not like the idea of languages and all they communicate dying out.
No chance it is anywhere near comparable. But in a century that thought that phrenology was a legitimate science⦠also not a troll
. There will be people who look at our current culture and understanding with the same disbelief that we look at the 1800s.
Granted that Iāll be long dead, but I donāt like the idea that someone 100+ years from now will want to tear down a statue of say Neil Armstrong for some transgressions in opinion or action that they consider to be immoral then.
Ding ding ding! Winner right here.
My sons second grade teachers is one of these, and to add to that, she feels that if something is true then she is obligated to tell second graders the unbridled ātruthā of it.
So she used Thanksgiving as a vehicle of that truth to tell my wife and son (Cherokee) about how bad the pilgrims are and how they murdered (she used that word! ) all of the native Americans.
So while some kids were making turkey hats and doing the gobble gobble thing, my kid got to be whitesplained at about how heās a victim by some preachy leftist
Yay. Turkey day. ![]()
Iām about to verbally fuck her up at an administrative level for that and the shit she pulled with MLK day. She took a perfectly good learning opportunity and turned it into a launchpad to justify violence for social change.
No. These SJW types are the product of their parents and they have their parents full support, emotional and financial.
Nah. Someone had to help free slaves from the United States, and she couldnāt count on Lincoln to do it.
Shitty dude. This is far from an isolated incident though, unfortunately.
Until the big whigs intervened. Eyes open on it today, because the options expire Friday.
I cannot claim credit for āweaponised autismā but itās an apt description of the Channer like internet groups.
