I was more referring to the few characters in history books. Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, guys like that. I donāt think thereās really that many famous Natives from the last 100+ years unless you have some idea of what A.I.M. was and who some of their members were/are.

In BC all the mountains, lakes, rivers, etc have the english name and the first nations name on the signs. In my neck of the woods lots of spots around Rainier use the native name Tahoma in their naming. If i say either Denali or McKinley you know im talking about a bigass volcano in AK.

Its gonna be tough to remove bias anyway you teach itā¦especially at the elementary age where making a story out of facts keeps the kids entertained and engaged. Maybe the bias is just shifting away from where it was previously?
Kids today and back in the day conformedā¦ to rebelling. Rebellion against the man, and the older generations sensibilities has always been a driving factor in young peoples pop cultureā¦ no different today. Its trendy to be a SJW that grinds against the the status quo.
I consider anyone under the age of 30 a āyoung personā for the sake of this conversation. Folks with families, careers, and real day to day busy-ass lives typically dont have time to champion causes like this. And i would argue kids in elementary school dont understand historical context without it being told to them (see bias). Kids in high school start to make that connection, and folks in college should be expected to make the connection. But young, idealistic early 20s folks with time to spare think they are going to change the worldā¦ as it has been for the previous umpteen generations.
Why not? I mean, it would be one name but two languages. Massachusetts is an Indian word but how many people know what it means? Itās just a word.

What are these kids rebelling against? Slavery? How brave they are to go against something everyone is againstā¦ we even outlawed it, over a century ago. Itās not contrarian if everyone agrees. Are they standing up to the Man; the man being Lincoln? Heās dead so itās not like he can put up a fight.

They are making a statement to the establishment that āyour heros are not actually herosā. They want to make a change in this world, but not have to work too hard or suffer to make that change. They might act like they are about that life, but they aināt about that life. IDK, the mindset just screams angsty teen/young person to me.

My cousinās elementary school was changed from Mark Twain to Susan B. Anthony, like 10 years ago or so. Not sure if it was because of āhatredā for Twain or just wanting to acknowledge Anthony. I think it was actually the latterā¦from what I remember it wasnāt a very dramatic event.

Iām not riled up about that in the least. But I am concerned about how far the race to be in-offensive has gone. Again it goes against the basic rule of analyzing history - donāt apply our current norms to a situation that was nothing like it. Being able to acknowledge that people in the past were great but imperfect is not the same as saying āwe canāt have our first presidents name on a schoolā.
If you donāt learn how to critically reason in school, where do you learn it? Youāre gonna be shit out of luck in the real world.

So while some kids were making turkey hats and doing the gobble gobble thing, my kid got to be whitesplained at about how heās a victim by some preachy leftist
