The Stupid Thread 2 (Part 1)

…Ever gotten a speeding ticket? As it stands, no felons can own a gun, even non-violent felons. I suppose you could make a case for non-violent non-felons, but it would be hard to really forge a relationship between minor non-violent crimes such as vehicle violations or pirating music with risk of violence.

Edit: Well, I assume we are just talking US here.

Not exactly. Any felony conviction disqualifies you, as do a number of misdemeanors like domestic violence.

No, you can’t. You have obviously never purchased a firearm.

I mean, you’re kidding, right?

I agree. If a person has littered, that person shouldn’t have a gun.

I feel as if there is a general misconception among non-gun owners about the hassle involved in buying a firearm. Last shotgun I picked up had me filling out multiple pages of paperwork, showing my firearms license, entering my social security number into a computerized background check, and then waiting 3 days before I was allowed to return and take the gun home after all the paperwork and background checks had been verified. Seems close to the reforms many are calling for.

I thought progressiveism was about protecting the disenfranchised, not creating more.

What am I missing here?

Actually in the past year I purchased a .22 takedown. Good for plinking out in the BC on hikes/dig days and ski tours.

You and others are missing what I am saying: there is no law making it illegal for any person with a criminsl history to buy a gun. If I am mistaken, I would honestly like to know.

I think any arrest and conviction/plea, even non violent misdemeanors, should disqualify a person from owning purchasing a gun. Misdemeanor assault when your 20? Too bad. DUI 10 years ago? Sorry. Etc.

Do folks have a problem with yearly psych evsls, or using some set of metrics to determine “responsibility”?

Who said I’m progressive? I certainly never claimed that. In fact a few posts up I said don’t speak for liberals haha

I linked it above.

Edit:

18 U.S.C. § 922(g)

First, fuck people who litter.

Second, would a j-walking or littering ticket show up on a criminal history report? Honest question? I guess it should just be misdemeanors on up. No “citations”… Unless someone can make a compelling argument for certain inclusions?

According to that you can have a string of misdemeanors, be an undiagnosed schizophrenic, and be a deadbeat mooching off welfare.

Honestly, you don’t see the difference between what I am saying and the link you posted?

You said you didn’t know of any laws prohibiting criminals from owning a gun. I linked said law.

I disagree with your other suggestions, although I’m sure the mental health industry would love to be paid to do psych evaluations as a prerequisite for passing a NICS background check. 23 million background checks in 2018 would be great for their business.

Littering is a misdemeanor in many states.

I thought I said “anyone with a criminal history”. My bad if it wasn’t clear.

Yeah, I can see big pharma possibly getting involved too… But then again, mental health is a huge issue with a bad stigma. Maybe 23 million more visits to the shrink would be a good thing?

We’ll, as I said, fuck litterers haha.

Maybe it is just violent or dangerous misdemeanors on up? You probably have a decent idea of where I draw the line… What would be a good way to phrase that line?

You did a few convos ago. Raised in a progressive environment, brilliant enlightened people, so grateful for their influence etc.

Sure, very grateful. Doesn’t mean I ended up progressive. Or, at the least, not nearly as progressive as you may think I am.

Plenty of conservative folks came out of my peer group too

I truly do not.

I have no idea.

Can you see that there’s a big problem with trying to draw an arbitrary line at which gun ownership is no longer permitted? No one knows where it is, or why. It will be moved every time it fails to bring about Utopia.

Looks like you draw it just behind yourself.

So only people that you would prefer to own guns should be allowed?

Fwiw, I’m all for the psych evaluation.
