It’s more complicated than that. The policy applies to unrecognized organizations. Further, it is not a ban on such organizations; rather, the policy implements penalties for belonging to them. Finally, it’s important to recognize that this policy was aimed at so-called Final Club membership, which have a rather checkered history at Harvard. More traditional Greek organizations are collateral damage. (And note that such Greek organizations are not recognized at Harvard.)
Not saying I agree with the policy–just that it isn’t as outrageous as it might appear at first blush.

I mean seriously, writing a policy so badly designed that as collateral damage takes out organizations with more than 100 years history? That alone makes it incredibly stupid.
