Up until about 4.5 years ago, we cared very much as a country how the POTUS conducted and carried himself. Its the same reason why we talk very differently in our private lives, vs when we are on a conference call at work.
The difference between what was seen as acceptable behavior and language from a POTUS pre 2015 vs post 2015 is striking. We went full Idiocracy in the summer of 2016.
Perhaps we did, but I think any reasonable person was able to infer that Trump’s remarks were private and place an appropriate weight on them.
I’m not here to defend every choice of word Trump has made, but I can’t help but be amused at the transformation of liberals from the subversive party of MTV, sex, drugs and rock & roll in my teenage years to the pearl-clutching puritans we have today.
Hell, I went to a party on Oberlin’s campus in the late 90’s where there was a Tent of Consent. One night was a casino house party with topless girls passing out cigars, booze and there was a scarface-sized pile of cocaine in the upstairs bedroom. The entire weekend visit was basically a drug-fueled fuck fest with a bunch of hippie musicians and artist types.
Interesting aside, I believe Chelsea Clinton was on-campus that weekend too. IIRC she was dating an Oberlin student at the time.
Maybe it’s still like that now, but last I heard the student’s are busy boycotting the local businesses for perceived racism. It seems like a real shit show, but I’m too old to go party there now. Who knows?
Anyhoo I’m getting all grumpy old guy now. Missing my liberal hedonistic days here in quarantine, I suppose.
While I don’t necessarily disagree with your analysis, I think 2016 shows that Trump shit flinging is efficacious. How much depends on the campaigns, I suppose.
The return to normality is Biden’s key campaign plank, on that I’m sure we agree.
While that is true, the anti-Trump base is pretty fervent. I think the odds are about 50:50, but that is the most milquetoast guess I could possibly make.
Based on longstanding previous accusations against DJT, i think those private comments rang very true. If Bill Clinton had been taped saying that shit, we’d all be thinking “yup, i bet that creep does just walk up and grab them by their pussys”. I have no idea why people want to give DJT as pass when he has a very similar history. I have no idea why we want to lower standards of conduct for the person who will represent us on the world stage, and is the figurehead leading this country.
Im sure a lot has changed at colleges since you partied there. What hasnt, is the drugs, alcohol, and sex.
Oh my hell, @twojarslave…you make me feel like Michael Corleone in “GodFather III:”
“…Just when I thought I was OUT…they pull me back IN…”
Just like Conservatives sit on the sidelines today and don’t take any stimulus or bailout money (well…they do…but those damn liberals make them do it!)…Conservatives (in your mind) seem to always be on the sidelines as the debauchery around them goes unchecked…
No way in hell Conservatives were watching MTV…or having sex (and CERTAINLY not homosexual sex…except if they were in Congress…)…or listening to Rock and Roll (I guess there was enough Polka music to go around?)…or (god Forbid)…having abortions???
My Hell, your even called it “…your liberal Hedonistic days…”
I think you’re reading a little too much into this, and you’re certainly not shy about running away with some straw men and you’re CERTAINLY not shy about mind-reading. I’m continuously amazed at your ability to know the intentions and motivations of everyone from Trump to semi-anonymous lifting forum posters. Astonishing. I imagine that must come in handy quite a bit.
Where did I ever say this? I’ve made plenty of Trump sex and poor-choice-of-word jokes since he started running. Ted Haggard was prime roasting material in his heyday. What’s not to like about a little party and play on the side for a supremely hypocritical televangelist?
Dick Cheney shot a guy in the fucking face.
Were you around in the 90’s? Do you think my observations are off, somehow?
My conservative days are hedonistic in entirely different ways than my liberal days, thank you very much. My hobbies include bouncing at my neighborhood dive bar, which is a great side job for a single guy with no immediate interest in marriage.
I certainly am no mind reader, @twojarslave…and I have no idea whatsoever what Trump, yours and most anyone’s intentions or motivations are…and most of the time, I don’t really care.
I just comment on what they may say…or what they may write on a small, insignificant little Political Forum.
This exchange started after a post where Biden essentially called every undecided black voter an uncle Tom. Instead of discussing that you started in on Trump again…
You do know you are talking about children when you say that.
I would say the truth is that what is called a liberal nowadays has changed rather than liberals changing. When Reagan poisoned the word liberal to include communists it made actual liberals stop referring to themselves as such.
It’s like calling Republicans conservatives; did conservatives change or who we call conservatives has changed?
The truth is that in America, terms like liberal and conservative are pretty much meaningless.
This (predictably) overstates it. I don’t know of a single liberal who cares about colorful language or departures from buttoned up airs. What they do care about (along with others) is abusive or indecent behavior - mocking a person with disabilities, for example, was never cool under a Rock and Roll mindset and ain’t now.
I’m also always amused how Trump apologists always try to minimize Trump as just being “coarse” but otherwise of good character - like he’s just the tough drill seargant who colors his language with F bombs but in actuality respects people and is on the side of good, he’s just “rough around the edges”.
Like 1,000 other things about Trump, it’s a lie and a calculated one and they know it’s calculated - Trump isn’t “coarse”, he’s an abusive bully who doesn’t treat people with respect and only uses them to his ends.
I clearly mentioned Trump to compare and contrast the Political Advantage one had (Trump) over the other (Biden) for saying and tweeting outrageous things.
Biden made a dumbass statement; and he will pay a Political Price in terms of Votes lost.
(And yes…Trump gets under my skin more than I should allow him…)
Not really, because I’ve never written anything to indicate I believe the things you think I do.
You seem to be inferring these ideas about me from my absence of commentary on issues, people or subjects, if past exchanges are any indication. As if I owe it to you or anyone else to comment on something I don’t want to.
There’s been the penance requirements before I can state an opinion I’ve thought out well enough to put to words. Dozens of posts from you and others amounting to… How can you comment on Steve Kerr when Trump is out there, doing Trump things? That was getting silly, you must admit.
Then there was the time you assumed I would be offended by someone in an NWA hat acting like the Covington Catholic kids, which is about the most inaccurate take on me someone’s had in this forum.
You asked the other day, why do we play these games?
I doubt it. He was on a show with some dufus who calls himself Charlemagne tha God (wtf is that?). I don’t think we should expect Biden to act like he is on Firing Line. Do the people who listen to that show even vote? Are they old enough to vote?
