Any examples of concrete policies they’re advocating to help POC in general? I have yet to hear anything from the SJWs or the BLM about that…
Dude, Filipino maids are basically slaves in Saudi Arabia, to be beaten and abused by the frustrated housewives and raped by their imbecilic offspring.
I’ve met a guy in SA who bragged that he once intentionally ran over a “slave” with his SUV because he was bored - the victim was a Pakistani construction worker.
I never got the feeling that i was being told i was the sum of my privileges. Not to mention, anybody with a brain can understand that Kobe’s daughter will have 1000x more privileges than white boy in a middle class home.
Why do you have such a victim mentality in all of this? No one is trying to say that just because you are white you had it easy. That is the shallowest, strawman argument you can make.
Matt Taibbi is an asshole, but very few people do rage induced hatched jobs better than him.
DiAngelo isn’t the first person to make a buck pushing tricked-up pseudo-intellectual horseshit as corporate wisdom, but she might be the first to do it selling Hitlerian race theory. White Fragility has a simple message: there is no such thing as a universal human experience, and we are defined not by our individual personalities or moral choices, but only by our racial category.
If your category is “white,” bad news: you have no identity apart from your participation in white supremacy (“Anti-blackness is foundational to our very identities… Whiteness has always been predicated on blackness”), which naturally means “a positive white identity is an impossible goal.”
DiAngelo instructs us there is nothing to be done here, except “strive to be less white.” To deny this theory, or to have the effrontery to sneak away from the tedium of DiAngelo’s lecturing – what she describes as “leaving the stress-inducing situation” – is to affirm her conception of white supremacy. This intellectual equivalent of the “ordeal by water” (if you float, you’re a witch) is orthodoxy across much of academia.
Rooney rule in football, tax incentives for hiring POC owned construction firms on projects, Implicit bias training to recognize when implicit bias is clouding nuetral judgment, POC career programs to get inner city kids interested in college/careers etc. Most of incentive programs i see are geared toward giving them opportunities and are meant a short term solution that would be phased out in later years.
Maybe im just more independent, but ive always learned what i thought was useful and discarded the rest. In school and in life. the over the top crap that is being pushed i just discard, and i take to heart the stuff that makes sense and is sensible to implement. That ends up being the “key points” anyways. I think most people are the same way. there will always be zealots who latch on and become fundamentalists, but those are the exceptions. Dont let those exceptions scare you.
On longer timespans it can play out otherwise, but that’s after everyone has had enough time to really understand why the intolerant ideas need to be rejected, thus becoming intolerant of them.
The risk is when particularly intolerant people, like Marxists, gain power and immediately pull every lever they can to ensure that they stay in power. I’m not really an expert on pulling off a Marxist revolution, but it seems like positioning a guy in Joe Biden’s current cognitive state would be ideal if one had aspirations of co-opting the Democratic party even more than you already have.
It seems as if lost in a lot of this debate to me is the middle ground. Or maybe I consider it middle ground because it’s my point of view but it seems like a lot to people is either/or.
To me it’s undeniable that me an average white male is more likely to have certain things. I’m less likely to be searched by police. I’m less likely to be passed over in job interviews because of my “traditional” typically white name. I’m far more likely to have representation at all levels of government which share my race and gender. I don’t think recognizing this is bad. I don’t think looking at why this is and trying to make changes is bad at all.
But we also don’t need to jump the shark with things. We shouldn’t make white people feel bad for being white. We shouldn’t tell people they were born on easy street because they are white. We absolutely should try to do things like increase opportunities.
To me you don’t advance feminism by saying all men are the devil. You don’t advance race discussions by trying to turn everyone into a racist if they feel differently. And these are two areas that I think we have made a lot of improvement in and should still continue to strive for improvement. But I think the way to go about it runs counter to the way the most passionate people in these areas do things.
Then everyone gets lumped in and you’ve lost it all. I want to reform the police turns into die pigs die. Saying justice for Breona Taylor makes you a Marxist or something. And now the movements are ruined in the eyes of the many people who would be willing to change.
Yeah, as mentioned in the review, a business is going under because of an 8 year old tweet from a 14 year old. A soccer player stands for the anthem instead of kneeling and she’s now the devil. College professors get fired or suspended for not being woke enough.
The anthem can fuck off. We fire a black quarterback for kneeling and now we’re pissed for standing. And all just because you did that in front of people. A lot of people take a shit during the anthem or order popcorn and that’s not disrespectful but do something (apparently doesn’t matter which now) in front of people and it’s awful and you hate the troops or want dead black people.
There is no such thing as a white name. I’m sure plenty of whites with Spanish names have been passed over. Or Jewish, Italian, Polish, Arabic, Greek, etc.
Because of sheer numbers.
Not that the effects of systemic racism don’t exist but black people who don’t know any whites assume that whites must get special treatment like rides home for a DUI. Or, the cops never shoot whites. We aren’t supposed to look at all blacks as poor, uneducated, criminal, teen mothers, absentee fathers, violent, loud, etc., but we can look at all whites as being the same? Didn’t MLK address this already when he talked about character?
What you’re talking about are more of what the culture war lines get drawn on, which is a lot of what resonated to me with '90’s liberalism. The same ideas still do, on a personal level and even a policy level. For an example of a nuanced position, you could say I’m “Anti gay marriage”, insomuch as it is hard to extend the tax-break reasoning of raising the future generation to people who generally aren’t doing that, because they can’t. That opens up the argument of why you have government that deeply involved in marriage to begin with, but now we’re slipping into an unrealistic libertarian thought laboratory.
Realistically, in today’s political climate, I’m on board with just calling it a done deal and letting the gays marry and pay less taxes because they’re married. For my real-world liberal policy position: If anyone should get an extra tax break, it’s people who take care of kids who aren’t theirs, regardless of who they like to fuck.
The problem with our modern Democrats lies in the actual policies being implemented, rather than the social or cultural sentiment behind them. In the case of the modern Democratic party, you have that powerful social and cultural sentiments being very effectively leveraged by the extremes of the party.
Think about this for a second. I joke about it, but we’ve been being told for years now that white supremacists are of grave concern, emboldened by Trump, his supporters, and soon they shall step out of the shadows. People still say this. They even got Trump to apologize for campaigning for President in Tulsa, Oklahoma, because of the fact-free concerns that are woven into this narrative of pervasive white supremacy that has our nation in chaos.
It hasn’t happened. Our cities are on fire, and we’re starting to have the police stand down.
On a side note, I was always bewildered by this peculiar racialism in the US, namely the one way street of blackness, seemingly accepted by everyone.
Kaepernick’s mother is white, yet he is black.
In Brazil or Uruguay for example, Kaepernick would be considered white without any discussion whatsoever.
I think the famous soccer player (trust me on that) Luis Suarez from Uruguay has I think the same mixed race ancestry - and the same skin tone as Kaepernick - yet was embroiled in a scandal for allegedly racially insulting a darker skinned player.
