I was talking about being bunkered vs venturing out. Of course all presidents face this, no?
Nixon and Johnson - build up in Vietnam gave us protests, getting out gave us Democracy dead and we should nuked China etc.
I remember the division as a kid, seemed like the end of the country. Maybe it was the beginning of the end, in retrospect.
Carter, Bush 2, Obama - the same. Why does anyone want that job???
I don’t blame him for being bunkered honestly I’m sure that’s standard practice. I’m not sure I can buy into the “but they were armed” stance from the side that thinks group of people armed like Rambo coming into a capital building are no big deal when it’s in Michigan but DC is another story. Republicans are all about the 2nd Amendment grenade machine gun rocket launcher loonies as long as they aren’t near them. But no sane person wants those people near them anyways so I’m not faulting them for that. Just the pandering and hypocrisy.
What I can’t understand is the need to venture out for a photo op in a certain place if you’re scared of protestors. A President who has no need to go to a certain place for a picture wants to hold his Bible near that Church so he can pander. So then it’s apparently get these assholes out of my way because I want to take my picture right there.
I look at that picture and I can’t figure out the message he is sending. I know it’s pandering but how exactly? I don’t get the connection between holding a Bible up and the riots. Is it some secret message I don’t understand or is it just the default mode to go to religion, guns or Mexicans even when it makes no sense?
It doesn’t make any sense and it’s not supposed to. It’s an attempt for Trump to say “hey don’t forget about these “needed” things that I have to pretend to care about to look good for you evangelicals.
Oddly enough should Jesus come down and say we need to treat black people better Trump would say no one treats black people better than me, know one knows the Bible more than me, and I prefer my son of God to not be captured.
Jesus would become a deep state operative in a hurry. That’s how far it goes back. Centuries of a far left liberal like Jesus trying to overthrow the 2016 election. Supporters will be chanting nail him up
I think it reflects just how stupid he thinks his followers are. I think his message (and process leading up to it was): I’m getting some bad television, especially re: hiding in the bunker, making me look weak. I need to do something, I need an image to counter the bad TV I’m getting. All I have to do is get a pic of me holding a Bible in front of a church, and my base will instantly ignore the bad press I’m getting and immediately revert back to “what a Godly man he is! So strong, leaning on Christ while everyone is attacking him!”.
I truly think he thought he could correct the increasingly negative imagery of himself with one photo op to win back the favor of Evangelicals.
“My mother just shouted out, ‘God give him strength! He’s doing a Jericho walk!’”
“My mother started crying. She comes from Pentecostal background, and she started speaking in tongues. I haven’t heard her speak in tongues in years,” he said. “I thought, look at my president! He’s establishing the Lord’s kingdom in the world.”
Did he feel that conflicted with the Gospel of John, where Jesus said “my kingdom is not of this world”?
“Well,” Horbowy said, “that’s a philosophical question.”
The quality of his statements on Obama’s strategy (or lack thereof) is completely and utterly different from his concern with Trump. And, he remained silent for 3 years, until a journalist hounded him into answering a question. Not so with Trump.
Also, he wasn’t fired because of personal differences with Obama himself.
Feel like he’s stealing my Trump’s not an adult take with this.
“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us,” Mattis writes. “We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership.”
It seems personal to me with Obama since he didn’t have the courtesy to notify Mattis in person he was being fired. And Mattis did call Obama’s strategy idiotic which is the same as calling Obama an idiot.
No argument his reasons for criticizing both were for different reasons, you just don’t see that much anymore. Most people, especially in high level positions, are only critical of one “side”.
