Because most liberals don’t actually understand what conservatism is. When they see a Libertarian candidate they readily identify with the social aspects of the platform and disregard fiscal/tax policy associated with libertarians and conservatives alike.
I think that there is a LOT of truth in that. I have seen people on my facebook repeatedly post about how they are libertarians and thrn support Bernie Sanders for president while he was still in the race.
The idea of individual responsibility is completely lost on them, and it is part and parcel of libertarianism
Doing a little research, there are only 250K registered Libertarian Party. So how are they projected at 8-10MM votes? NeverTrumps & NeverClintons are taking a 3rd choice it seems. I would say a large number of people feel like you, USMC, & others in this thread.
Voting due to an ethics decision, are informed, disgusted by the binary choice but wanting to effect a future change.
Looking at RCP 4 way and 2 way national polls show equal gains +/- 1% to both D and R going from 4 way to 2 way, even as 3rd party polls smaĺler %. Trump has had a channel top at 44% for a year.
I don’t think these Libertarians are really such. I see true Libertarians as mountain men, utopian dreamers, self sufficiency guys like pushharder. Man is pack animal and living like a caveman went out with well the caveman.
To your point, I believe Dems are chasing “Liberty curious” Dems who are Nevers, are socially progressive, probably social media educated, and likely young enough to be peer pressured into making the cool choice & disaffected GOPers.
Obvious troll post but something to point out : no one takes gary Johnson seriously because he has the demeanor of a dope. He talks and walks like one while Trump breaks records voting records with his.
“You can’t defend his goofy demeanor he comes off like he takes nothing seriously”
Trump has mocked a disabled reporter.
Trump thinks Obama is the founder or ISIS
Trump thinks Obama was born in Kenya
Trump thinks_______(insert probably 100 goofy things)
That post was not trolling. However, it points out how blindingly hypocritical you are.
He’s polling consistently at 9%-10% and was a 2 term Republican Governor of New Mexico so, obviously, someone takes him seriously. The idea that people take Donald Trump seriously and not Gary Johnson completely blows my mind.
Johnson:
2 term Republican Governor with a pretty darn good record. School voucher program, budget reductions, left office with a surplus, etc…
Built the largest construction company in New Mexico from nothing ($0) to over 1,000 employees.
Has climbed all seven of the seven summits
Is a competitive triathlete and ultramarathoner
Can’t name a favorite foreign leader
Trump:
Born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
Inherit’s multimillion dollar business, which he’s managed with lukewarm success.
Created a successful TV Show.
Thinks Putin is awesome and that Obama is a foreign-born Muslim that created ISIS.
“Los Angeles (AFP) - A conservative Arizona newspaper is facing death threats and losing subscriptions after it broke with tradition by endorsing Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump for US president, a senior editor told AFP.”
I spent a few minutes looking at the Editorial board and they don’t look overly conservative with several listing Dem in their bio. The head of the paper doesn’t list party but worked MN, SF, Chicago liberal papers and is a woman in journalism. I’m only guessing but likely to be Dem.
Are I ‘profiling’? Yes. Does their makeup suggest high probability that they are Dem? Yes
edit As I told TB Dallas Morning News switched endorsement to Dem but Dallas is 100K whites in the city, and owner is Dem, so why any surprise.
Not discounting Republic, Dallas Morning News, Chicago Tribune are doing something historic, but times and management change. And their voices are getting smaller every year.
Who reads an editorial page to get their candidate choice anyway?
No. It’s to point out that Trump DOES THE SAME EXACT STUFF that you’re giving Johnson shit for.
There’s nothing that needs to be defended. You’ve claimed no one likes Johnson because he’s goofy; yet, you ignore all of the stupid shit Trump does. This is about how hypocritical you are not about defending Gary Johnson.
@treco They’ve never endorsed a democrat until this election. Never. Don’t you think that’s a pretty big indicator that there’s an issue with the Republican nominee?
You posted a link to the NY Times yesterday. You posted a link to the Washington Post (who you’ve criticized on more than one occasion) 6 hours ago.
So, who care? It appears like you do.
That is your opinion and it is hardly the consensus. How you can say the above about Johnson, but fail to see the same exact thing with Trump is a real head scratcher.
Your feels are showing again. One could say the same for literally anybody who they don’t agree with. Ask any conservative how Hillary sounds (screeching/coughing usually comes up). Asky any liberal how Trump sounds (dump, egomaniac, idiot, making up words. One word sentances usually comes up).
There were literally memes of Trump’s debate responses that read like a 1st grader wrote them.
It is a big deal I suppose (not to me, as I said their voice is getting smaller per year) but in a discounted way.
Suppose the MD Times has been a Liberal beacon for yellow dogs of Baltimore for a century, but young computer Billionaire USMC buys. USMC says I am a Libertarian, it is my paper, I am a billionaire and guess what? MD Times editorial board endorsing Gary Johnson because…
I don’t see that as unpredictable. 90%(?) of journalists are Dems, but the paper endorse GOP? Not buying that.
mixed up my Dem and Lib affiliation, but you get my point
I think it means something larger is at work. For years, the Libertarian Party served as an outlet for disaffected conservatives, just as the Green Party has for disaffected Democtats (not just in national, but in state and local). The Libertarians didn’t get big numbers, but it was understood they were on the same side of the philosophical fence as Republicans, same as Greens were with Democrats.
But now the Libertarian candidate is apparently pulling Democrats away, not Republicans. And it’s not as though disaffected Republicans are flocking to Greens.
I don’t think it’s as simple as @Alrightmiami19c suggests - that liberals just don’t quite get what libertarianism means across the board. Sure they do (generically), as much as conservatives do.
I think it is evidence of at least two things - rank and file Republicans are less committed to the “liberty” ideal than most think, and two, the socially liberal/fiscally conservative bloc is ripe for the Democratic Party’s taking, if they feel so inclined to re-up on big tent politics.
If the latter occurs, that spells doom for the GOP.
