The Next President of the United States: III

I think Cruz and Rubio are looking really good in regards to their chances right now. I’m not a Cruz fan, but I think he’s set himself up well.

The field is narrowing down, and I am very surprised Carson and Trump are still at the top. Didn’t think it would last this long, and am fearful of the true believers who will keep it going as I don’t think it has a happy ending.

Some candidates need to drop out. Graham, Santorum, Huckabee, and Jindal can’t actually think they still have a chance.

It’s true that Trump and Carson are at the top. But, if you have noticed neither of them have gained much over the 23% to 24% level. I think Trump spiked at 32% and then immediately fell back. Did you notice that no matter how outrageous Trumps comments he never loses that base? Yet, he never goes beyond it. That means that when people do start to drop out, like Santorum, Huckabee, Paul, Christie and company I think their supporters will choose someone else. Basically, Trump and Carson each have a glass ceiling.

Okay this is what I’m hoping…

Agreed, but Trump/Carson have not followed traditional political trajectories to this point. I am still optimistic Republican voters will see through the reality-TV Trump show they are currently watching to make a more sane choice, but their base continues to go along with anything they say. Time will tell.

Yes, that is my point. Their base goes along with whatever they say, but that seems to be as far as it goes as their base is not growing. Hopefully when others at the lower end drop out that support will go to one of the more serious candidates.

One more point worth mentioning. When world events get serious, such as the recent bombing in Paris, I think voters look to more serious candidates who are up to the task. At a certain point I don’t think Carson and especially Trump will look all that good.

I mean do people really want Donald Trump as Commander and Chief with such serious issues facing the country and the world? Up to now it’s all been fun and games. I believe they will think twice.

Does anyone know Obummer’s recent numbers?

I’m sure Bismark would say the support of your troops is irrelevant.

I bet it’s pretty low…

More people are willing to vote for Trump because voting is anonymous, and Trump speaks to people like a non-politician.

One thing people know about Trump, is that he will not sugarcoat anything. Whether or not that’s enough to get elected is unknown, but people are sick of Obama’s vocal dithering.

No, compared to the more serious candidates such as Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, John Kasich or even Jeb Bush.

No one who isn’t a progressive, a feminist, or simply out of touch with reality wants Hillary Clinton to be the next President.

I’m starting to get more on board with Cruz. He comes off a lot more serious than Trump, and better suited for the position than Carson.

He’s a good man, but is he electable? Charisma and looks play a big part at this level. On the other hand look at Hillary…so maybe he could win.

Cruz is not a particularly goofy looking man. Even if he was, his oratory panache would make up for it.

Jindal’s out. Shouldn’t change anything and the field should continue to narrow down.

So you’re telling me looks matter, eh?

That is a particular goofy picture of Obama. But, objectively speaking he has a great smile and much charisma. He also has a great speaking voice. These are things that people pick up on and it attracts them to a candidate.

I’m not saying Cruz can’t beat Hillary, I think he can. But, let’s just be honest he is not the best looking most charismatic candidate that the republicans offer up.

That was a piece of good news for the republicans last night. I don’t recall off hand how much support he had, 1% to 2% perhaps. Those people are likely to move to Cruz given that Jindal is quite conservative. Of course some could split among several candidates as well.

I met Cruz recently at a cattle-call fund raising thing. He’s kind of a big guy, which surprised me. Really solid-looking back. I told him as much and asked him if he deadlifted.

He looked surprised and said “yes, I stop at 315, but do sets of 8.”

FWIW.
