The Most Interesting Man in the World

Why don’t you stay lean while building muscle? It is possible. Eliminate bulking/cutting from your vocabulary and you will be much happier year round.
I agree. I just don’t think I’m at the stage where I can call myself lean considering I’m still >15% BF. I think once I’m under 12% BF, I’ll feel comfortable with putting muscle/strength gains as my #1 priority.

And plus, I just spent $300 on supplements. Can’t let that go to waste

 1. Go to the gym every day to lift. Keep reps at 8+ per set, 2-4 sets (read: no ME work). Objective: to lift stuff.

 2. 30 minutes of morning cardio. I’m shooting for 3x this week, but the more the better.

 3. Eat whenever and however much I want, as long as it’s clean. That means lean meats, veggies, fruits, nuts, the occasional starchy carb (but only if it’s in the morning or early afternoon). No burgers, no pizza, no chips, no cookies, etc. Even though I’m about to start a 12-week fat-loss blitz, I have no excuse to start eating like shit.

 4. Keep the alcohol to a minimum. Once Get Jacked Fast starts, my alcohol intake will pretty much have to fall to 0.

Bottom line: I need to keep my muscles moving, but I need to stay fresh for the grueling 12 weeks that lie ahead. I also need to keep my metabolism ramped up. If I put on a few pounds this week from the excess calories, who cares? As long as it’s coming from clean sources, I won’t sweat it.
Fuck me.
The more I look at myself in the mirror, the more I begin to think that I’m choosing the wrong path. My DEXA scan from a month back (5/1/09) put me at 21.1% BF, which at the time equated to 143.6 lbs of fat free mass and 38.4 lbs of fat mass. Fast forward a month, and I’m at the same weight (2-4 lbs lighter), but I can assume that I’ve lost some more BF given that I’ve been getting stronger and my waist is getting smaller.

Also factoring in that the DEXA accounts for visceral fat and brain mass, I can roughly put myself at around 16-18% BF right now. A 12-week fat-loss blitz could possibly put me at… a scrawny version of myself.

If I gained muscle while limiting fat gain, wouldn’t my BF% decrease anyways? Am I focusing too much on the numbers?

I’ll be spending this week thinking about it. I’ve already bought my supps, so that’s a moot point. However, I can still most of them to kick my workouts up a few notches. If anything, I could just follow the program while taking out a few of the cardio/interval things and adding in more heavy lifting/hypertrophy work.
