The Morning Commute

Currently my commute is 1 hour 10 minutes to work, and anywhere from 1.5 hours to 3 hours going home depending on the day. I’m out the door at 5:00am and back home around 7:00pm. Even with this schedule I’m still making my best ever gains in the gym.

I’m on the road for Toronto at 6AM Monday morning and 4 1/2 hours later, I’m sitting at my desk and park my car for the next 3 days. I then drive 4 1/2 hours to come back home. So Monday to Thursday are very busy but I still find time to include 2 or 3 workouts during that time.

The beauty of this is that I have 3 day weekends every week. And some times, I work at home for a full week.

The funny thing is that some people who live in Toronto spend more time on the road than I do.

This is low. How do you know the late great JC doesn’t hoop it up? I hope when you get to heaven that daily pick-up games are mandatory.

Randy

I’m guessing you work in or around DC.

What do you do?

self-employed software consultant.

Hey everyone, just found this site again.

It does a good job of showing what cognitive-based therapy is all about - cutting through your weird-bullshit ideas about how the world works - whether you don’t think your six Cokes a day make you fat, or that you ignore the fact that constantly scowling at your co-workers is the reason why they hate you, rather than their treatment of you is the reason why you scowl at them.

You gotta make that time “your time”, whether it’s listing to books on tape (fiction, non-fiction or textbooks/college lectures), your favorite music, or NPR or AM sports station.

I do my best thinking in my car. What kills me is being in heavy traffic. I drive an hour with no traffic. No problem.

With books on tape you can totally self improve in the car.

Learn a new language. Pimlsuer has great programs. The commute is one of those things that you can make the best out of it or hate it. It’s all in your head.

Eh, I’d say use Pimsleur if you have plenty of money to spend and don’t mind learning the language very slowly and only up to an intermediate level. The Foreign Service Institute makes much more effective courses (although tougher), IMO. Plus, they’re public domain, so a lot of them can be found online for free.

I commute 1:45 each way. About 15 minutes driving, 10 minutes walking, 5 minutes waiting, 1:10 minutes on train. Some people say life is too short to commute this long, but I have a nice house with a decent sized yard in a nice community.

There are only a small handful of jobs outside of NYC in what I do and I would give up significant income by working near my home. The institution I work for has nice benefits and a great working atmosphere in terms of being flexible when it comes to family needs and I get a TON of vacation, plus all of the banking holidays.

15 minutes either way tops. Benefits to living in the midwest I guess. Not that there aren’t areas around here with longer commutes, but generally there isn’t a 2-hr commute, etc. until you get closer to Chicago or Minneapolis.

I value my time way too much to waste it driving to and from work, and unfortunately in my line of work there isn’t much you can do in the car (unless you aren’t the one driving).

I get them from the library. I listen to the books on tape more than I listen to music. Talk and sports radio actually makes you dumber so avoid it at all costs.

My commute is 40 to 50 minutes. Not too bad. I had a shorter drive to a worse job before. This is a better situation.

In the summer I ride my motorcycle and I really enjoy it.[/quote]

Most libraries these days have internet catalogs as well, so you can browse from home or work and have your book/tape/cd of choice sent to the closest library to you.

I used to do a 45 minute commute, but though it was on a major highway I wasn’t in any real quantity of traffic… so I didn’t mind at all.

I’ve also done a 15 minute commute through insane rush hour traffic and it was a killer.

If the drive isn’t stressful, I don’t mind it at all, probably up to about an hour, it either let’s me strategize about the upcoming day or unwind from the stresses of the day, whichever is needed.

My commute is about 30 minutes by bus and about 25 minutes if I drive. I really don’t mind it either way.

In my previous job my commute was a whopping .7 of a mile. I usually walked.

I’m with you bro. I would love to find something outside of NYC but I’m afraid the money just won’t be there. I do catch a nice nap for that hour on the train each way…plus banker’s hours rule.

Half hour walk to Forest Hills and then a 20 minute train ride to Downtown Crossing(mass. public transit is so bad). I used to work in Marlborough Ma where it was close to a 2 hour drive that sucked
