The Mistake of Going to Planet Fitness

[quote]tom63 wrote:
I’m always polite to anyone in the gym since they might mean future business for me. I think it’s the out of shape crowd that needs their ego stroked that came up with this stupid idea.

Do you think I worry about what someone thinks of me while lifting? No. But every woman that talks to me about going to the gym whines about how uncomfortable and self conscious they’ll be.

Of course they’re never self conscious when they’re blowing down Krispy Kremes. I think most are just plain lazy.

To be honest it saddens me that there are even people that planet fitnesses shtick appeals to.

I guess there are two kinds of people in this world. The first group sees a successful person and uses that as motivation to improve themselves. The second group, the group that planet fitness markets to, sees a successful person and becomes insecure and wants to detract from that person’s success.

i think im on my way, one of the barbers today said i looked like i was on a cycle. its a compliment considering he used to be pretty into lifting and was pretty jacked…but i understand im still small, theres at least 10 guys at my gym bigger than me.

its not about me getting all upset about what people say either, i mean they look like shit, my thing is unless someone is a doctor or in better shape than i am it really doesnt fucking matter what negative things they have to say. im just pissed that this whole world is drowning in estrogen. its pretty sickening to see some of the people i see and see some of the behaviors and comments i see and hear. i mentioned before how i heard a guy at Target say “eww i dont want those it has icky fried fat stuff.”

the guy wasnt even gay, he had a girlfriend…who seemed distressed to be with a soy-boy such as him. my Biology teacher came up to me today and said “whats that on your arm?” Me, “its an allergic reaction” …“to what?” “eggs” “…are you on drugs?” …wtf? man. ok, so maybe all the B.S. does get to me a little but i mean wtf dude youre trying to talk shit because i look good? are you fucking serious? how about every fat person or deathly skinny person i persist to riddicule? everyone wants to make a fucking steroid comment, how about i make a “bet you cant see your dick you fat fuck” comment.

It always got to me too. I started training when I was a teenager a little over 30 years ago. I had to deal with all the stupid comments from people such as what will you do when you’re 40? It’s going to take so long to get big and strong and whatever. I was at my 25th high school reunion and I was definitely the biggest, most muscular looking guy there. I’m still only 5’7", but I was in shape.

My wife is very attractive and 11 years younger than me. But by now, it didn’t matter. I just was glad to see old friends. You’ll get to the point where you don’t really notice this silly stuff and they don’t even say it. It’s just to make them feel better because of their lack of effort.

Remember, all that estrogen is good for us guys who happen to prefer our testosterone. Believe me, women like it.

I’m not sure why, but in this country it’s taboo to be healthy and in shape. Why? Why why why. I’ve heard it ever since I started eating right. I get ridiculed because I don’t want any dessert or fried food or junk, why??

Every time I turn down something bad for something good, someone inevitabely makes the snide comment, “What are you a health freak or something?”

No, I’m not a “health” freak, you fat fuck, I just don’t care to look like you do. Why is it such a bad thing to eat right and lift weights? Everyone loves someone that looks great, but for some reason those great looking people get harassed for the steps it takes to get there.

Same thing with education and being intelligent in this country. Everyone picks on the smart kid in school just for being smart. It’s obviously a big thing in elementary and high schools, but even in college. “Dude, you’re not going coming out tonight because you have to study!? Fag.” But everyone is whining about how we need more education and more schools.

“We love education but hate the educated.”

It’s all a bunch of bullshit. Do like I do, and when you need an extra boost in the middle of your set, think of how much you hate those fat pessimistic fucks. You’ll finish the set out strong every time.

I would only do exercises that allowed me the opportunity to set off the lunk alarm after EACH repetition.

But that’s the kind of jackass I am when it comes to authority.

wft…“breaking a dumbbell?”

How fucking high are you dropping them from?

I think this entire dropping the dumbbell controversy can come to an end when you consider that the planet fitness i visited only had dumbbells that went up to 65 lbs. It’s really hard to strain yourself with only 65 lbs.

I saw a guy break a 25 pound dumbbell last year and he didn’t drop it far. They will break eventually after repeated dropping.

I would say it takes quite a bit of abuse and over a significant period of time unless people are literally tossing them like discus throwers. Usually, the heavier weights damn near have dust on them so they tend to last in spite of being loose with handling them…which is why I keep bringing up the weight used. Someone who has a working range for dumbbells below 90lbs has never experienced what someone has to deal with when they start moving past 120’s.

I think its ok to drop weights from a reasonable height. Let’s say you were doing DB bench and after your set you need to set the weight down. So you lower the DBs on each side, and in my case i can only get like so low, like a couple inches from the ground. In this kinda case, its fine to drop it IMO.

But you shouldn’t be that jackass whole does some shitty shoulder exercise with DB’s while screaming and then drop the weight from like 5 feet high. I’ve seen it drop on other people’s feet or roll by people who are in the middle of their sets. That shit is clearly dangerous for people and the weights, so it should not be condoned.

Hardly anyone uses 120 pounders. The 25 pounders probably get used 1000 times more often. In my gym the 120 pound plus dumbbells are rubber covered and the handles are a thing of beauty.

Ya, the 100 pounders are in almost perfect condition at my gym. The rubber sides don’t wobble at all and the little plastic labels still say how heavy they are.
But if you look at anything from the 20 to 55 range, the handles aren’t silver anymore, the rubber weights wobble on one side and there are NO LABELS WTF?!

They wobble because people keep dropping them

lol.

I will say, that those who drop them relatively close to the ground, I don’t really have a beef with, but there are countless people who drop them and I can here them hit and rattle with my earphones in, several feet away.

My gym has 11,000 members, and about 2,000 come into the fitness center a day, that’s a lot of abuse that DBs go through to be repeatedly dropped over and over again. They’re going to break, and one time they could break while you’re using them, so at least try to respect them somewhat

yea so if 11,000 members are paying $25 a month thats $275,000 a month, i think they can spare some extra cash. my old gym also had the policy that if you break a dumbbell you had to buy it. im sure thats probaly how my gym now, and most others do it as well.

I’d be fine with that, but I swear I see way more broken machines than I have EVER seen broken dumbbells.

I wouldn’t. What happens when somebody else does the majority of the damage, but you are the one that gives it its final blow?

I am nowhere the weight Professor X is talking about, but try as I might to be sane with releasing MY equipment I have destroyed the the basement floor in MY OWN HOUSE. To reiterate what has been said there are times when it is not humanly possible to just gently lower the equipment and if there isn’t, you belong at Planet Fitness.

I once saw an “OUT OF ORDER” sign on a dip stand at my old university gym.

I gave the it a few good shakes, and it seemed stable enough to me. Don’t know how a dip stand would be out of order as long as it’s still standing up.
