The KimbaLog

Beautiful workout Kimba! Women doing pullups are always a real crowd pleaser and going lower on the squats is awesome. If you feel stalled on the MP, I recommend going to dumbbells for awhile. For me it turned out my left was doing all the work and I broke through by repping the right.

It’s also very cool that your husband gave you an oly bar as a present. Have a great day.

Actually, the only food I feel about the way you feel about mayo is…cucumbers. Disgusting.
mmmm cucumbers. I like them in a box with a fox in the rain and on a train. Especially with cream cheese on a sandwich.

You know, I TOTALLY feel stalled on the MPs, and will take your sound advice and hit up the dumbbells for awhile. That is, when I’m not playing at home with my brand-new oly bar and four cute 'lil 5# plates. I actually wanted it mostly for complexes, but perhaps at some point I’ll buy more weights.

From now on, you get to eat my allotment of cucumbers. I’m so glad they aren’t going to waste!

MP is a cranky bastard sometimes, I do mine as part of 5/3/1 and its always trying to lag my other lifts. Do you do any assistance exercises for it?

MP is the slowest lift for everyone i know. I like barbell better than dumbbells because I can make smaller increments. (Don’t be too proud for the 2.5’s!)

I hate cucumbers AND mayo. But that’s the extent of my food pickiness.

Joe, I’ve been doing my MPs sorta-kinda the 5/3/1 way but using the bar is sometimes too heavy for my puny 1 rep max calculations. I might switch to dumbbells for awhile to work at a weight lower than 45#. For assistance, I’ve been doing chins and dips, face pulls, some triceps pushdowns.

I’m happy to hear that I’m not alone in struggling with MPs.

I am the QUEEN of the 2.5! Going for PRs in a tiny way is usually my weapon of choice.

It is very unusual to run into a fellow cucumber-hater. Most people look at me like I am crazy when I announce my hatred for them. For me, its the smell. Yuck.

You know, I never really understood the concept of anger as being helpful to one’s lifting until today. Today I was angry with myself about something stupid I’d done, and focusing on that feeling really helped make the weight go up.

Back squats to 4 risers plus a step
Bar 1 x 10 warmup
75# 1 x 10 this felt really easy
105# 1 x 10
115# 1 x 10 <–Rep PR +5
120# 1 x 5 <–PR +5lb
65# 1 x 27

Bench
75# 1 x 7, 1 x 5
65# 1 x 9

Lat Pull-Down
70# 1 x 15

Shoulder press/biceps curl
17.5# 1 x 15

Dips
BW 1 x 18
I could have done more, but I gave up mentally. I’m still kicking myself for being a pussy.

Lots of ab work

Well, this training was…interesting. I’m happy for the squat PR. But I’m happier about beginning to understand the mental part of this game.

hey- nice set of PRs there kimba! I don’t get the mental part of the game, anger just distracts me and make me incoherent. Not that I’m that verbally articulate anyway…

Anger’s helpful for me. When I’m doing dumbell rows I imagine someone I hate lying on the floor and me ripping out their windpipe with my bare hands.

But you’ve never actually done that, right? …Right? …Cal?

one arm shoulder presses are awesome for working out imbalances!

yay for early xmas presents!!

at the risk of sounding like the village idiot once again: what’s an MP?

military press…AKA barbell shoulder press, or overhead press…

Thanks George! I would have thought the same…distracting. But I was mistaken. Whether this situation can be repeated on demand, that is another question.

Wow! Remind me never to piss you off.

anger during a workout… ya, it works.

Nice work on the squats and dips. I, however, do not share your enthusiasm for egg salad. Eggs, yes…but mayo is the devil’s jism. Bleurgh!
Preach sistah!
Having had a nights sleep on this experience (well, sleep was rather elusive, unfortunately) I’ve got a little more to say on this subject. Lifting from a place of mental pain, whether it is something affecting you in the moment, or a past painful experience that you are deliberately dredging up for the lift, might be effective. But it sure isn’t a whole lotta fun.

Since I like learning and growing, I certainly did learn something yesterday and got a long-wished-for PR to boot. Am I sure I want to do it again like that? Not sure at all.
