The KimbaLog

Hey, you are looking great, as far as I am concerned! I really love how we all pull together here and help each other out–sometimes with a comment on form, or advice, sometimes with a swift kick.

Let’s all hold hands and sing a few verses of kumbaya…snort

I just realized you are doing ten reps on those squats. Good job, my core starts flailing around at higher reps. How low does your box take you right now?

The four risers plus a step puts me right at parallel – probably legal depth but perhaps a hair above. I like to take one squat day at lower reps while putting weight on the bar, and the next squat day at the same weight but higher reps to be really sure I’ve got it. Now, I have no idea if this is effective or efficient yet. We will see after about 4 weeks of this to get closer to my pre-Form Police PR.

Or we can just have a snort. Red wine tonight!

Cheers! Don’t mind if I join ya

and good plan on the squats alternating heavy and light.

Indeed. There is a glass, and I’m filling it up.

Hey, thanks for the thumbs up feedback on my squat plan. I figured this way I’d force myself to put the weight on the bar slowly.

sure, get your reps to work and learn the movement and put some f’n weight on the bar 'cause that’s what we do.

It’s a cheap calif cab tonight for me.

I’m not fond of wine. I’ll just help myself to a New Glarus Raspberry Tart from the gourmet beer corner.

Even though I hate them, deloads are very helpful. Not to mention hotel gyms are like a long trip through hell.

I like this idea. May have to hijack it.

Today’s workout was in the morning rather than my usual Friday nite situation due to having to leave on a road trip today.

Back squats to 4 risers plus a step. I checked again and I do think this is legal depth.
Bar 1 x 10 for warmup
80# 5 x 5
85# 3 x 3
90# 1 ugly rep which instead of a “squatting to box” turned into a “box squat” when I…uh…unintentionally paused on the box. I’m counting it because after a moment of collecting myself on the box, I was able to get the weight back up and did not have to dump it on the rails.
90# 1 x 2

After getting really pissed off about landing on the box (“i’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”) on the first try at 90#, I knew I just could. not. let it go at that. So, I stepped up to the bitch-bar, put the fucking thing on my back and banged out one pretty good rep. Emboldened, I went for a second one which wasn’t too bad, but certainly not perfect. I’m getting a bit of knee cave on a few reps, and some forward lean on a few others, and some butt wiggle at the end of sets.

However, interestingly these form breaks are only once-in-awhile. Perhaps I’ve had a lapse of concentration, or there is some muscle fatigue setting in causing me to shift the weight too far forward. I can usually re-focus and fix it on the next rep.

So thats some progress.

RDL
65# 1 x 10
95# 1 x 10
105# 1 x 10

I was concentrating on keeping my back arch, humping the bar on the way up and making sure I got a good stretch in my hammies on the way down. I filmed these for the first time ever, and I must say I was pretty pleased with form. 105# was challenging, though, and my last rep or two weren’t as low as the others.

I am planning to deload this weekend while away and not train again until Wednesday.

We’ll see.

wow!! i can never get the squat up if i get pinned down to the box unexpectedly. good on ya! and two more reps after that… nice psychological domination.

Post video!

On losing form on the squat, I bet you are losing core tightness. You probably have the strength but need to pull everything really tight before and during the rep. I’m only saying this because when I start to flail around, I can sometimes get it back by tensing everything in my torso. pay attention to your breath.

Good job, on the squats, Kimba. Arachne makes a good point though - will have to try it myself.

I’ll advise against doing the hokey pokey during your squats, and second the idea that you’re losing concentration. maybe the weight isnt enough to scare you into concentrating. For those beautiful seconds im under the bar, it’s all out war, me against the loaded bar and gravity.

don’t forget to keep up with the mobility drills during your deload! and some NEPA!

I’m skeered.

Actually, there is no need for da Violence as I’ve gone nowhere near a gym since Friday. The hotel gym’s idea of “free weights” was…get this…two of those adjustable dumbbells going from 5 to 25 lbs. No benches. Just a bunch of treadmills. Pathetic.

Hey, I am always available to provide comedy entertainment for readers of this here log! Should anyone wish to see me pinned to the box on my 90# squat attempt on Friday, click here:

And this is immediately after the pinning, when I am pissed off enough to complete two reps at 90#.

Good times.

Arachne, you are probably dead-on right. Core tightness is something that I am working on, but its far from perfect. I also still suck at the breathing part of lifting.

90# doesn’t scare me…you are totally correct. So much of this game is mind, not body.

Now that I’m back home, me and my foam roller are back being BFFs.

Fear is a biggie for me.
One thing I learned yesterday that’s nice about training with other people – SAY you’re going for a PR. That way you have someone to disappoint if you fail. T-Nation can kind of substitute, I guess; if you announce your goals you have to live up to them.
I was so scared on my squat PR yesterday, but if I say I’m going to do it then I’m going to do it.

Oh ye of little faith.

I really feel like my body needs the rest…I think its valiantly fighting off my husband’s cold virus and needs all the help it can get to keep me well.

Oh, and I’ve been eating like a little piggy too. A frenchy dinner at the CIA has convinced me that wild boar is delicious, and 20 year old student waiters should not be let loose to flambe Crepes Suzette.
