The Hardest Sport to Become #1 In?

There have been several good replies here my 2 pennies worth here
F1-very hard in part due to the fact that if you dont have a lot of money or backing you’ll never get in
Boxing or MMA-you may not get the CHANCE to fight for a title
Soccer- I don’t know, there are more than one “number 1” players
For me especially as the participants get older the BISP championships are the hardest

Yea, I guess he wasn’t like his full time partner or anything, but he was a very good amatuer here in Utica and also boxed in the military. I remember my father telling me he was a sparring partner with Sugar Ray, I’ll see if he knows more details, like was it once, or a couple times or whatever.

What a nice little legacy for you…he should have left you his boxing gloves.
Imagine all the emotions of his life struggles enmeshed in those gloves.
Any worn out pair of boxing gloves is evidence of someone’s fortitude.
Like an old comfortable pair of shoes that has seen the mile of your path.
A witness to one’s raw nerves as it were.

If you do box, remember to leave the glove for your offspring.

The hands that rocked one’s world, eh?

Yes to this!

BTW, Roger Federer will be voted athlete of the decade. Second is Tiger, third will be Lance.[/quote]

I would place Michael Phelps accomplishment above all those.
It has been said before in this thread and I will reiterate:
Unless you have trained at elite competitive level swimming you don’t know how hard it is.

It’s a no contest, golf!

I don’t think any sport where you compete as a sole competitor like golf or tennis is hard to be #1. Simply because once you’re the best then well, your #1.

Team sports such as NFL are the hardest to be #1 simply because there are too many positions for anyone to be #1 at that sport. Is Tom Brady a better NFL player than Jerry Rice?..How could you compare the two when they play different positions. Jerry Rice can’t throw like Brady and Brady can’t catch like Rice. In order for someone to be the best NFL player i would think they need to be able to play all positions effectively, but that will never happen. Rice is the #1 receiver but he could never be the #1 NFL player. No one can.

I’d be happy if Fed was voted athlete of the decade, he is true class in all aspects of his game and how he conducts himself.

I’d disagree with Phelps trumping the afore mentioned. I know he pretty much cleared up the swimming at the olympics but i think there are way to many swimming events, controversial i know. Im not disagreeing that he trains hard or that training at elite level swimming is grueling but so is cycling, rowing etc…

soccer- its the worlds most popular sport… theres always somebody better than you in another part of the world.
