Actually, I think the original meaning of retard/retarded was “slow”, and retard/retarded became a euphemism for idiot/idiotic. So now you would be tip-toeing away from a term that is itself a euphemism.
I’m not sure what the problem is with using “retard” if you are using it within a group where everyone is comfortable with it. Mentally disabled people and their friends/family aren’t going to be insulted or offended by my use of the word if I’m not using it around them.
Shoot, will “rape” and “murder” be next on the chopping block? I mean, people are raped and murdered, and it’s awful, but I still find myself saying “I absolutely raped that test” every now and then.
I use the words retard and gay like its going out of style but I don’t mean in a way to hurt mentally challenged people. I understand the word inflicts pain upon people but I don’t point the word at them. I don’t point and laugh and yell, “Look at the tard!” when I see them. I wasn’t like fall down drunk…more like…oh man…I think I’m still drunk…it quickly progressed to hungover…when I realized I was sleeping at my desk, I packed up, headed home, ate 2 big macs, 1 double whopper with cheese and a chocolate shake…crawled in bed…slept for about an hour…woke up…had some water…went and coached soccer for my team that doesn’t have this retarded, ugly girl on it.

To her they were acceptable. She was a little old lady never ment any harm. She thought the world of him and his family. They would bring me to church. Which every grand-mother thinks a young boy needs. In turn she would bake tons of stuff for his family. So it was all good.
I think what we need in todays society is
“tolerance” instead of crusades fighting the good fight.
Everyone has a way of saying something. Its the intent that is important. And I am sure anyone even a “Special Needs” or “Mentally Challenged” or lets say it “Retarded” person can understand the difference or can be taught the difference. The only thing your doing for anyone with PC is making them more sensitive to any other new term that comes up.
