I’m in a weird love triangle with probably the hottest French woman I could ever dream of having, my boss and a 23 year old who is kind of useless but a good time.

I’d amend that and say the parents bear the bulk of the burden. I’ve seen kids from shitty backgrounds be positively affected by wonderful teachers. If a kid’s education is up to their parents, period, then kids with shitty parents are doomed forever, and while this is unfortunately MOSTLY true, it’s not an absolute.

I can anedoctally confirm part of this, with my personal experience.
The summer before I began elementary school, when I was five, by mom decided to teach me how to write and read. That stuff is taught in the first year of elementary school here, so I went in there being able to do stuff that other kids weren’t.
Now I’m not saying that I was set for life, but I had a head start because my mother had decided to go the extra mile as far as my education (silly example, but I was 5yo so she already did more than what most parents do, seeing as no one else in my class could read and write). She made it feel like a game and I was enthusiastic to practice reading and writing.
So yeah, parents cannot substitute teachers because they don’t have the knowledge of the subjects, but they CAN give the right imprinting to their children so they go into school with the right mindset about learning.
