I’ve actually always thought obese people had more muscle as a result of being so damn heavy. People say squats and loaded carries are great for adding mass. Well, big people are doing that 24/7.
And talk about progressive overload - they’ve been adding a pound or two every couple weeks for years!
Ive been getting body composition tests done every three weeks for the past 9* weeks now and the last one I got I managed to lose 4lbs of fat and gain .5lbs of muscle. so its possibles I would say.
well, even without any research, we can definitely argue that a cut, at least in the short term, isn’t conducive to building muscle and strength.
and that’s why i’ve been holding on to that for a while and still hasn’t done the cut i want to do–because i’m getting so much stronger that i know cutting would bring that to a halt, temporarily.
or maybe i could keep getting stronger if the cut is quick and the deficit doesn’t catch up to me in time, who knows. the point being, though, that it’s definitely a risk.
One thing I’m learning with my current deficit is that you can’t chase two goals. If you are cutting drop the weights back some. If chasing strength then you have to eat.
yeah, if you’re chasing strength (and size) you definitely have to eat. but if you are looking to lose fat, i believe that sure, you might benefit from dropping your volume, but you absolutely need to work super hard on those few sets.
that’s what keeps muscle while you’re dieting down.
If losing fat it would be better to drop the volume but, keep the intensity. Pretty sure studies have been done on that. Lyle Mcdonald has some good stuff on it.
Checks my log: Down 12lbs, hit a 30lb squat PR and hit my log 2 rep pr for 2 sets.
I’m just being a contrarian, I think it depends a lot on how fast you’re cutting and where your starting point is (are you going lean to shredded or fluffy to lean)
fluffy to lean on a slow cut may have some strength improvements to go with it. I think it’s safe to say it’s fairly hard to lose muscle during a cut too as long as you’re still hitting the gym (unless you’re going full shreddy spaghetti)
Genuinely don’t understand why people buy professional athletes jerseys…those damn things are expensive, and it seems like every damn year the biggest sellers seem to get traded.
I know growing up in San Diego, we bought a LOT of Ryan Leaf’s jersey because we were dealing with rolling blackouts and needed something to burn for warmth.
I got a Manny Ramirez jersey back when he played for the Red Sox. I chose the white jersey because it has no name on the back of it. I’m now a fan of…(checking roster)….apparently no one.
I have a custom made football jersey in the colors of my college. We have no football team.
We have shirts that say “Undefeated Since 1986” when the program officially ended. We’re not Marshall, but about half the team was killed in a plane crash in 1970. I’m not sure if that was the beginning of the end or if the program failed for other reasons.
When my roommate tells me “I’ve been eating enough” or “I eat a lot” while he “gorges” on a 6inch sub. Meanwhile I’m taking down two footlongs and a bag of chips. I cant wrap my head around people that cant eat. It makes me confused and angry. (If it’s a goal, sure, but just… trying to eat as much as possible, and it being less than a snack for me kills me)
Same! Every once in a while, I go out to eat with my friends. They peck at the dishes like birds. Meanwhile, I’ve cleaned off at least a pound of meat. The benefits of having muscles???
