I caught this little guy(2 pounds) saturday morning at a gravel pit near my house.Thats the average size but we have caught quite a few around 3.5 to 4…bass grow slow here and its a small pit.

I say it’s a largemouth and my neighbor thinks it’s a smallmouth.Help me out here…who’s right.

There’s this bird that dive bombs after small fish all day long and have no idea what kind of bird it is but it sure is cool to watch. When it does catch one it takes it to the same branch above the beaver dam(yep we got two beavers)and beats the shit out it for ten minutes and then eats it.The one in the picture I will send caught a big one in it’s beak, flew way up and flipped it in the air and caught it lenght wise and swallowed it down. It definitely looks like a largie to me. The color is really strange though, a lot of the ones I get are much darker. I’ve heard that that can be a result of the vegetation in the lake, as bass adapt differently in order to stay camouflaged.

This is one of the tidal pools (the one where I caught the fish). This is all under water at high tide. The sand beach is to the right.

I fly fish for stripers, mackerel, etc. across the water on the point in the background. You can see the line between the darker and lighter rocks. That’s the tide line.
The only striper I ever caught was off an island near the harbor in Freeport. It was a tiny schoolie but I caught on eight pound test and light freshwater gear, so it was exciting nevertheless. It’s really nice up there.

The color had me wondering at first as well. It’s a gravel pit with no real river to feed it and the water is a very light green from the algae.I’ve never seen a bass so light colored before either. That dark stripe has me convinced it’s a largemouth too.I will never eat one that’s for sure…It’s surrounded by a farmers field and all the water drains to this pit and I’m guessing all the pesticides with it.

Awesome day with my son and a couple friends. Perfect weather on lake Erie.Off the water by one o'clock. Eleven Rainbow Trout and one Pickeral.Fresh fish for the long weekend BBQ.

Very nice Pike. Looks like you had to go in after it lol. Going steelhead fishing soon, hope to have a pick of my own to show here.

Nice, db.

We’re between seasons right now. All the stripers have gone south out of the rivers and the cold won’t bring the smelts back for a couple months. No ice yet. It’s actually a great time for small mouths as the water is just starting to cool and the fish are pissed off trying to get as much food before the cold hits.

May have been attacked. I’ve seen trout and bass attack fish I’ve had on the line as they whip around and make a ruckus. If that one was thrashing and making noise, there is a good chance it got the attention of a bigger fish.

One of my favorite tricks for flushing out bass is to catch a bluegill and let it flip out for a while. After just a few seconds, any big bass in the area will be there to get it.

Oh yeah, Heading up to Lake Erie tomorrow fr steel head. I had one on the line last week but it busted me off.

Hey guys, Springtime is right around the corner, April 1 is trout season here. Here is one I grabbed last year in a small creek by my house. Flipping a gold pheobe upstream.

V

Second trout that day about 5 minutes later in the next little area. First one was about 12, second was 12.5

it looks to me that this pike was bitten by another pike far larger.

this pike seemed to be only about 3-4 pounds, so i cropped everything out so you guys can see the marks clearly.

opinions? only normal scars from something boring or did a 50 pound pike attack it?

id like to assume it was a big pike attack. that just makes me want to keep fishing
Yeah, I’ve seen plenty of fish that have bite marks from other fish. I was once reeling in a fish, when I almost got dragged out of the boat from a sudden tug. The fight went out of the fish on the line, and I reeled in a fish head. Barracuda got him.

I’ve also had pike attack fish I’ve had on the line, but they always bolt when they get near the boat.

You lucky fuckers. I have to wait till the end of April for Steelhead. Problem is some years depending on the rain the run is already done by that time. I prefer river fishing for Bow’s but a few posts above this one shows a good day on my buddies boat on Lake Erie.

Rainbows have gone crazy on Lake Erie the past few years. Not as many coho’s though. Zebra Muscles cleaned everything up. I read lately that the Gobey is actually helping the Bass population as well. They are eating them up like crazy.

Yea all the creeks are stocked yearly around here but you can still latch into a few natives here and there. I think they count them as native if they make it through a winter. LOL.

One year when I was younger I reeled in a 24 incher. Thats a monster for my creek.

V

24" is a monster anywere! I’ve only fished for speckles once and had a ball. They fight like a bastard.

I help a friend of mine who runs a fishing club in Goderich, Ontario. One hundred thousand + Rainbows fingerlings released in Lake Huron per year. It’s alot of work but very rewarding knowing I’m helping in a small way to preserve the fishery. I have the pleasure of fishing some of the prime spots in Ontario right in front of his trailer on the Maitland River. Get shitfaced, struggle into the waders and stagger into the run and pull out a eight pound Rainbow on six pound test with a three pound leader using mostly spawn bags for bait. The breakthrough for me was not being so lazy and started using the three pound test leader. I’ts more mucking about and you snap off easier but I catch more fish.

I was given a fly rod a couple years ago and I’m still trying to get the hang of it. Alot harder than it looks thats for sure. Look up subtle in the dictionary and it will say “see fly fishing” lol.

Those are some very pretty browns.

I’ll have to get some pics this year of a place I started fishing in the fall. Native brook and rainbows in a pristine spring creek in the foothills of the Appalachians. The colors on those fish is just unreal. I’ve been dying to get back there all winter.

Subtle is right on the fly too. I’ve seen fish turn away from a dry fly because the tail was twisted. I’m going to build a 6’6" 2 wt. for the small streams in a month or so.

nice trout

what did they weigh?? 5-6 pounds?
Haha not even close, they were only a foot long. Maybe a Lb to 1.5 I’d say.

Now the 24 incher, he might have been pushing 4 Lbs

V

Hey guys can i join in?

I’d definitely keep fishing dude.

But to me, from the looks of it those two scars are equal and opposing and with enough definition to make me think that toothy motherfucker was whacked by a trolling motor prop. I could be completely off my rocker, especially if boat fishing isn’t even allowed in that water source, but that’s what it looks like to me. The more prominent scar on the left has the right shape to fit around a prop blade, and the opposing scar looks like collateral damage from a “turn and flee” reaction. It looks rough and ugly but bite scars are rougher, and much uglier.

Well theres never been a boat on that lake. And its really rare that anyone else fishes it.

Its a tiny lake to.

Tiny with monster pike in it.
Well, fuckin’ A.

I stand 100% corrected. Had to have been a bigger pike then.

cool. Did they taste nice, hope they did.

I got some rainbow trout in my freezer. Im too lasy to eat it now. I seriously suck when trying to fillet the meat, its like mince fish whenever i do it.

Still yummy though right?
Na I sent em back. I usually don’t eat the fish I catch. I actually suck at cooking fish. I love to get it at a restaurant, but for whatever reason I gave up ruining nice fish a while ago. I do a lot of bass and pike as well so I don’t really eat them to begin with.
