Debates work on those too ignorant or dumb to actually understand scientific writing. It’s why lawyers debating in a court room make it emotional. It doesn’t matter what the facts are if one can provoke and emotional reaction that overrides logic. Makes perfect sense why you love them so.
There is some evidence that political debates change opinions…sometimes. Scientific/data driven debates should be backed up and sourced with writings. Therefore the writing is the precedent under which the debate exist and is the de facto authority.
