The Death Metal Graveyard

While we’re on the subject, the first band (of any consequence, at least) that I was in was a death metal band called Undertaker. I was 17 when we released our first (and only) CD.

Join me now won’t you… in 1994…

On a total random note, I finally got my costume for Halloween. I’m going to be Abbath of Immortal, and my other two friends are going to be Horgh and Apollyan

Who’s going as Demonaz? I thought the current line up (or at least the reunion line up) was Abbath, Demonaz, Apollyan and Horgh? I’d heard that Apollyan was added as a permanent, official member, but that could be disputed.

And oh yeah, Horgh > Armagedda (old drummer) lol

Originally this other guy was going to be, but then he pussied out on doing the corpse paint, so he’s going to be a Viking…or an emo unicorn, he hasn’t decided yet.

IDK man, I like Horgh’s drumming better, but Armagedda made me giggle.
So is Apollyan officially a member of Immortal now or is that just a silly rumor circulating on Wikipedia?

And yeah, Armagedda was funny as shit! Call of the Wintermoon video, case point, lol.

Death metal stopped being good in about 1993. I blame Cannibal Corpse, and all the monotonous pig squealing jun jun jun jun rubbish they inspired.

Clearly Scandinavian death metal from 1987-1991 beats pretty much all other death metal. Nihilist, Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Demigod, Carnage, God Macabre, Crypt of Kerberos, Funebre, Interment, Grotesque, Miasma, Gorement, Nirvana 2002, Liers In Wait, Evocation, Eucharist: all awesome bands.

I strongly disagree, while Melodic Death Metal is awesome, the more brutal side to Death Metal is just as respectable.
There is no such thing as melodic death metal. It’s a misnomer made up by shit bands in an attempt to disguise the fact that they jacked all their riffs from Iron Maiden.

None of the above bands are “melodic” death metal. All of them are more brutal than nonsense like Prostitute Disfigurement and Visceral Bleeding (quite possibly the most boring band I’ve ever had the displeasure of seeing). The best way to ascertain whether or not a death metal band is worth bothering about is whether or not they list Autopsy as a musical influence. If the Autopsy influence only extends to lyrical content they are usually rubbish.

Good list. I completely agree. Don’t forget old school Tampa death metal!

Never really got into death metal, but I do remember hearing some decent songs growing up from some older guys who were big into the scene. Can’t remember the band names, though.

Where does Danzig fall in terms of genre?

I was just messing with you calling them Melodic Death Metal haha, since most metalheads think of the idiotic Gothenburg scence when they think “Scandinavian Death Metal,” I digress though. You did name pretty much every fucking good band that came from that scene. I do however disagree, that CC made the scene dumb, on the contrary, it give it fresh air, since half the bands at the time we’re Death/Floridian Death Metal rip off bands. Suffocation basically was the first “br00tal” Death Metal band imo, and that aspect of Death Metal is also great. What bothers me now is the influx of all these American Metalcore bands that rip off the brutal bands i.e. Suffocation, with the more mainstream pop sound. That’s my beef with the scene today.
