The Day The Earth Stood Still: Thoughts

Yep, they botched it.

Could have been great.

Saw the original when I was young, thought it would be amazing to see an indestructable man-sized robot destroy the world. It would take him a long time, I thought, but he’d get there in the end. Smashing it one building at a time.

Plenty in remake made no sense. Why couldn’t Klatu stop the grey goo? What kind of stupid failsafe system is that? Are these aliens idiots? Why make the robot the shape of a humanoid if the aliens were something else? And if the shape of GORT was meaningless anyway?

I have to say though the beginning was good with the inevitable collision, although, people would be a little more scared and panicky methinks.

I do not see the original with rose glasses - it simply was very good. The acting etc… was great. Even the kid. The kid in the remake was a complete idiot - bad script, badly delivered, nonsense behaviour, unconvincing waste of time.

Agree!

Just curious…did you find yourself WANTING to like it…but you just couldn’t?

The next day in the office (because I told people I was going), they asked how I liked it…

The best I could muster was a sheepish “It was okay…”

Mufasa

Oh…

“…Plenty in remake made no sense…”

M…Its almost felt like they started with a great scrip and idea…then got too mixed up in there own “creativity”?

Almost like Speilberg with “War of the Worlds”…

“I’m Steven Speilberg; and I’m a genius and I’m creative; and I’ll make this based on MY vision…blah, blah, blah…”

Cool, Steven…but it just didn’t work…

Someone in another thread claimed Wall-e sucked. I saw the movie and thought it was decent, especially for kids. I am not sure what that person was expecting to claim it sucked.

The very beginning sucked because nothing happened. Once humans got involved, I loved that movie. Those little immobile, micro-gravity adapted humans were hilarious! Pretty cool how they were both complacent yet they wanted nothing more than to stand up and get back to the real world.

The Day the Earth Stood Still Straight up Blew Chucks and Sucked Greasy Yak Balls. Nothing was well done. The fog that GORT turned into was too hopelessly powerful. The whole environmental thing probably could have been pulled off but it wasn’t.

I think the worst part was Will Smith’s kid breaking our balls throughout the movie. I just wanted to snatch him off the screen and yell “Shut the fuck up!” The movie would have been much more bearable without him in it.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Original cast
Michael Rennie
Patrica Neal
Hugh Marlowe
Sam Jaffe

Keanu Reeves is a capable actor, along with Jennifer Connelly- Kathy Bates is beyond capable, but I thought she was miscast. John Cleese as the Professer didn’t work and I’m a Montey Python fan.

Damn I had a crush on Patrica Neal- as a kid. Michael Rennie seemed Shakespearean.

Science Fiction give us more science-something to stimulate the imagination.

Exactly!

As a matter of fact, Klattu stated (in so many words) that he could care less about all out little internal “sqabbles” between our peoples…but what concerned the other planets was our developing missle technology that would allow us to expand beyond our own planet.

(I’ll see if I can find that final speech and post it.)

Indeed he said something to that effect. And I see his point too. If we destroy ourselves, that’s all good, but if we destroyed someone else…

I thought Bates and Cleese was “interesting” casting too…and it didn’t work.

Will’s kid was a great casting choice…but the screenplay basically turned him into the jerk Hugh Marlowe was in the original! (Doudowen; I recently watched the original, which I like to do with remakes. I think Neal and Marlowe had perhaps the worst screen kiss EVER! She looked like she was kissing GORT!)

Again…I’m unclear what the screenwriters wished to accomplish by making Smith such a brat…

Hugh Marlowe and Patricia O’Neal in the original “Day…”

Mufasa

Looked up P.O’Neals bio- She’s still working.

Was offered original Mrs. Robinson.

Thanks for photos.

Keannu Reeves was a brilliant casting move, and he played Klattu with a cold, but compassionate, precision.

Keanu is a terrible actor, but I have liked a few of his movies. I actually laughed a little when I read “brilliant casting move” because I thought it was a joke.

This movie was absolutely terrible. It has too much build up for nothing.

Seven Pounds was a terrible movie as well. However, I did not mind watching Rosario Dawson the whole time.

The best movie I’ve seen lately is Valkyrie.

“Valkyrie” looks like a good one.

Isn’t there also another WW-II movie coming out with Daniel Craig (the current James Bond)as a German soldier?

(I can’t seem to find it).

Mufasa

Found it.

“Defiance” is the movie.

Mufasa

There is three World War II movies coming out in quick succession.

Valkyrie with Lil Tommy Cruise

Defiance with Daniel Craig

Good with Viggo Mortensen

That does look good.

I think they should have stuck to the original theme. It’s not like we’ve exactly dropped the war-like tendencies.[/quote]

I liked the movie where the aliens landed and threatened to kill us all, because of our wars and such and when they put together a world peace treaty the aliens answered “no bitches, we breed you as warriors and you are all far to humane, fuck you, and good bye”.

That was awesome.

Wasn’t that a Twilight Zone episode?
