There’s a story there. When the Comics Code was introduced, horror and crime comics were phased out due to violent content. The original dark Batman was under threat from government legislation, following a campaign against juvenile deliquency (sound familiar?).
To avoid prosecution, DC capitulated and softened Batman’s image starting with the addition of a certain teenage sidekick who’d serve as a positive role model for all those wayward boys.
It backfired on the censors and became even more subversive than the material they originally threatened to ban. The Batman TV series spoofs the camply rebellious tone of the censored comics, while Schumacher attempted to lampoon the series without knowing what it was all about.
