The Dark Knight: Official Review Thread

After careful research I have concluded that Christian Bale is arguably the caped crusader in real life as well as on the big screen. Let’s look at Batman as a person: Rich, selfless, and not to much of a family man.

  1. He has voided his personal PR to help the good of the whole
  • In batman, Bruce Wayne virtually ruins his good name in order to save the hope of Gotham. In real life, Christian Bale steps aside and lets other stars take his limelight.

In Batman begins, he stepped aside and let Katie Holmes take the attention with her marriage to Tom Cruise and in Dark Knight he stepped aside as the world grieved over Heath Ledger. Even though he plays Batman and the movie is about Batman, he never seems to be what brings people to the film.

  1. Dark Knight box office release put Bale in a new tax bracket
  • In Batman, Bruce Wayne has an unimaginable amount of money which gives him the opportunity to have top of the line equipment to fight crime. In real life, Christian Bale just starred in the highest grossing motion picture in Hollywood history.

That along with money from royalties and merchandising (Where the real money from the movie is made) the final sum of cash is unimaginable.

  1. Family Issues
  • The origin of batman is derived from his issues with his family. Batman wouldn’t be Batman if his family wasn’t messed up. In 2008, Bale was arrested for assaulting his mother and sister. London police pushed his arrest until after the release of the Dark Knight.

Yep, saw it. Thought it was really interesting. According to them it is very possible to be Batman in real life, as long as you have A LOT of money. I think I’m going to look deeper into this possibility…

I really have no interest in seeing cat-woman or killer croc as a main character/villian. In the two movies that were done you had the crebral villan who torments Batman, Ra’s al Ghul using scarecrow as a puppet. Then Joker using the city as his play ground.

Killer croc is hired muscle that mostly does bank jobs and kidnapping. Catwomans story would not fit into the “Reality” of Nolans Batman universe. I mean what would her story be? Only way that it would work would be if she is an official Cat Burgler like in the comics, none of that bitten by a cat bull shit.

Here is food for thought…What about Clock King?[/quote]

The Clock King? Really?

The thing with Catwoman(at least the last 20 years or so) is she’s just sort of amoral - sometimes the villainess sometimes the heroine. Her moral ambiguity combined with her tangled relationship with Batman makes her purrrfect for Nolan’s Gotham City where maybe she helps him but isn’t truly on his side.

They may have to tweak the origin if they put it on film but they removed the supernatural elements from Ra’s al Ghul so I’m sure they could work something out for Catwoman.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Harley Quinn, but if they wanted to delve deeper into the character of Bruce Wayne they could always go with Hush.

If I may tie in the History Channel to the discussion of possible upcoming villains…

In Batman Unmasked they discuss the inspirations & psychological underpinnings of Batman & his rouges gallery. They spend a lot of time on Two-Face (dissociative disorder), Scarecrow (sadist), The Riddler (narcissist), Catwoman & The Joker (psychopath). 3 of those have already appeared in Nolan’s movies. Meanwhile, The Penguin gets 1 throw-away line about bureaucracy run amok.

Considering that 1. Obviously, The History Channel worked closely with the filmmakers & 2. I have heard that Chris Nolan explicitly ruled out The Penguin as too cartoony. Are they giving us a hint?

The Riddler would be powerful enough to get the citizens of Gotham to call for Batman to return as a hero. While I could easily see Catwoman as a minor villain in Nolan’s Gotham. Perhaps Selina Kyle is a former gymnast/martial artist (or even a former cop) who turns to burglary out of greed/need/moral ambivalence?

Her alter ego a twisted manifestation of Batman’s intent to inspire the people of Gotham? Not to mention, every hero needs a love interest. Nolan could do wonders with the psychology of that relationship. As Pootie Tang said, they’d have to drop the unrealistic parts of her back story. But they already dropped the idea that The Joker fell into a vat of chemicals, so that’s no biggie.

They didn’t classify Catwoman as a pyschopath. That was reserved for Joker.

I’d pick Hush, Deadshot, Calendar man, Poison Ivy, Ventriloquist, and Mr. Szaz. Of course Two Face.

Szaz was an inmate at Arkham in Batman Begins…right?

Well I don’t think that Harley Quinn will be in the third movie since the Joker is dead. He can’t mate with any females to produce one.

In comics, yeah. In the movie, I think I saw him.

I say Angelina Jolie as RED CLAW.

BOOM. DONE.

Well, we’ll just have to wait and see…

Heh, Im calling for a boycotte of the next Batman movie! Look what Nolan has reduced us too. We are like a bunch of old women at a quilting…who am i kidding?

NOLAN YOU ARE A CRULE, COLD SON OF A BICTH FOR MAKING US WAIT!!!

Hush would be pretty badass but I don’t think it will fit.

Your avatar… is… so… AWESOME!!!

Oh, and I think that if the Penguin is too cartoony (though he could be done as simply a “gentleman of crime” with a bird fetish), the Riddler is the way to go. OCD-Narcissistic Riddler would be great in the Nolan universe. The more I read about him the more I want to see it happen.

Who the hell suggested the Clock King? He was a minor villain at best. He had a nervous break down because he was late to court. Seriously. Not big screen material, especially following the Joker.

Its only a Tiger. I think his avatar is sub-par to be honest.

Slap 40-50 pudgy pounds onto Adrian Brody, and boom… Oscar-winner as a main villain. No?

Question (unless I missed it previously): Does anyone think they’ll try to bring Robin into this new series? Jumping straight to Nightwing in the next film might be an interesting take on things.

The chances are slim to none. The director was asked where Robin is in the Batman universe, he said “in a crib, somewhere”.

I JUST saw Dark Night last night. So, I’ve got 12 pages of reading to catch up to you guys.

Quick take: Fantastic movie, but not the greatest movie ever. I did like the tragedy of the ending and how vulnerable the characters were portrayed. I had a hard time with Batman’s voice.

I think they could do Robin well as long as they never actually stick him in that fucking suit. if they portray him as some bad ass kid who just happens to be able to perform gymnastics, it could work.

The concept of Robin is great for kids. Not one of us questioned it growing up. However, realistically, there is no way that would make sense…not the way the comics portrayed it.

In fact, if they played it as if Bruce adopted a number of kids and Dick just happened to stand out as one gifted teenager, then no one would squirm in their seats at the idea. They wouldn’t even necessarily have to live with him.

Notice, they did keep “Batgirl” (Gordon’s daughter) hidden in the shadows in this movie. I guess they are not sold on the girl currently playing that part.

There must be something wrong with me, because the Whole “bat-voice” did not bother me at all.

He doesn’t wanna sound like Bruce Wayne, big whoop.

Shows how solid this movie is that we can only complain about Bale’s voice and build.

And from what Christian Bale has said, it was a choice he made to be a bit leaner this time, it looks like he’s about halfway between American Psycho and Batman Begins weight.

He said that Batman had realized that he need to be quicker, so just like a lighter weight bat suit was needed, so was a lighter weight Batman.

Also, think about this, before Batman hit the streets for the first year of crime fighting, all he had been doing for years was training, so it makes sense that he would be in the best fighting shape when he his the town in the first movie.

Flash forward a year, he’s been up all hours of the night, and attending business meetings in the day time, when is he going to have time to train ? It would completely make sense that he had loss some muscle mass.

I’m glad you said this. I wasn’t bothered by his voice at all either and was starting to think I was the only one.
