The big blue experience.

Welcome back BN and congrats on the deadlift PR.

3 plates a side by Christmas?

“t come sup quite slowly ie it’s work all the way.” Slowly??? I took me years to get a 275 DL!! You’re going at warp speed!

Yeah, the walking was . . . fun . . . but I couldn’t wimp out, being the lifter and all. The only ones who made it all the way without turning back were me, my brother (in his 60s, walks at lunchtime, no other exercise), a mid 60 cousin, the male nurse, a 7 yr kid and his mother. Little Jackson is amazing - I call him “Action Jackson”, he never sits still. He kept up with us and was as fresh at the end as when we began. Just unreal. They really need to get that boy into sports. Affectionate too, he hugs everyone.

No, the nurse doesn’t lift, said he thought about it, but didn’t have the discipline for it. You’ve said how a nurse’s schedule can dull your appetite for outside activities.

I just thought - if you like nurses and strongmen, you may be interested in this. You might have seen it already, it’s my favorite BBC program:

She certainly is, in fact she just got back from the gym all pleased with herself as she had bench pressed ‘solo’ for the first time–bare bar only but i think that is really positive progress for her.

Down in arna she mainly ran/walked, just did one session in the gym there but wasn’t really comfortable with the equipment.

Turkey Run State Park in Indiana.

3 egg omelete at the gym? Wow, what kind of gym offers that? Here in the states they just sell smoothie shakes.

It’s a 'posh one cav, swimming pools, tennis courts, 'restaurant–the whole deal. It is expensive and to be honest i only really use the free weights section of the ‘fitness arena’ now aside from an occaisonal swim.
I only joined when i had my gastroc tear as it was the only place that i could access a heated pool easily.

It is also just across the road from the hospital so it’s directly on the walk in to work.

Todays work.

Running around this morning trying to get my windscreen fixed (picked up a stone chip on the last days driving).

So pm…walk to gym.

Warm up : Dan John based complex of 2 rounds of 6 moves ,10 reps each. One with bare bar and one at 25kg.

Then main work : Bench press
30kg warm up 1x10

50kg 5x5 (actually more like 3+2 today…weak ??)

Secondary work :
Deadlift

80kg 2x10

Lat pull down, playing really but basically an ascending weight sets ,somethng like
55kg 1x10
62kg 1x15
65kg 1x5
68kg 1x5
70kg 1x5
72kg 1x5
75kg 1x5.

Single dumbell row each side(one of my previously missing moves)
24kg 1x10
26kg 1x8

Finishing with some body weight exercise.

I’m slightly disappointed. I envisaged you getting out your camping stove and knocking one up in the squat rack.

Across the road from where you work? How sweet is that?

OK, it’ a fancy smancy place. No concrete floors or broken windows or big guys puffing up clouds of chalk as they grab bare bars and swear at the top of their lungs. The free weight section - are there a lot of serious guys there?

I know…just ruins my rep when they throw me out for lighting a fire and doing it the proper way !!

Sort of cuts down on the available excuses when i have to walk past the place to get to work !!.

Most of what goes on in the ‘fitness arena’ is people jogging/walking on the treadmills, spinning wheels on the bikes whilst watching tv !! there are even a couple of the recumbent style bikes parked right under tv screens that seem to only attract the ‘size enhanced’ members.

Sad to say that most of the work in the free weights area is endless bicep curling at the db rack in front of a mirror.

There are some fit looking guys but it’s rare to see anyone doing the big lifts aside from a few benchers.
Just a few weeks ago i met one member cranking out deadlift sets when i was doing the same and he actually sopped to say how good it was to see someone else deadlifting and squatting !!.

Hardcore ??? no…but the trainer i had there was excellent (he has since left to go solo)

You really should try a hardcore place sometime. The atmosphere really isn’t different . . . but you feel different. Something about seeing other guys warming up with weights you can barely budge . . . makes you want to work so much harder. The determination sets in . . . you see what’s possible . . . what should be possible to you.

Your place sounds good. What hours do you go there? You might be missing the hardcore people.

Cav…
I have been thinking about the gym situation quite a bit recently.

The actual situation here is that there are some 4 gyms clustered around the hopsital :
The hospital has it’s own sports centre with apparently a weights room so that might be worth a look at depending on access times.
The posh gym (the one i have been using) is officialy a ‘health and raquet club’ has 2 swiming pools, sauma etc +the fitness arena which includes quite a small free weights area.
There is also a sports college justb along the road which has public/community access and having swum there it does have a gym which looks incredibly busy at times—seems well equipped and is about half the cost–access times aren’t as good as where i am using though.

I train mainly at 2 different times :
When i am working it’s pre shift (i start around 8pm) so i am in there at the busiest time, at that time of day its a real pain sometimes, even my trainer there said the gym etiquette is appalling with guys stepping over you/around you/leaving weights all over the place etc–and they have local radio cranked up really loud.

Better time is when i am not working and i can have a more focussed workout either mid morning or early afternoon–time swhen i have been just about the only person training.

Sometimes i think that a training partner would be really good–my shifts though just don’t match up with just about anyone else and from what i see of guys who ‘train’ together there is a lot of hanging around and talk and not much work going down.

Watching guys warm up with my maxes is a pretty regular occurence except …down in arna where i seemed to be aquring a reputation as the ‘animaux anglaise’ because i was actually deadlifting/squatting and swinging a kb around where most of the french guys were doing pretty gay workouts even by my standards–maybe i should ove there full time and be king of the castle !!.

My previous trainer suggested coming down to the local crossfit outfit (where he trains) says it’s a real simple setup and with a really good training vibe–shame it’s several miles away.

I am also gradually aquring some kit myself-just bought an oly bar, have set up a pull up bar already and got a couple of kbs so maybe heading towards a home set-up, main problem is finding space (tiny terraced house) but looking to see what i can realistically set up.

When i was younger the dirty and less mirrors on the wall the better for me. Now that I am older I love having the hot tub and steam room at my “Wellness” center. They are pretty cool with allowing me to bring in bands and chains and never bother me when I am doing something the average Joe doesn’t do. The added plus is that at 48 I am normally the youngest guy in the gym…lol

Colin, you really should visit my gym up here. They let you bring bands, don’t know about chains, and don’t complain if you let a 400 lb bar thump on the floor.
