You should train however makes you happy! Screw em.
But i have to say that i find in general PL training does definitely thicken you abs. Deadlifts and squats for sure. And i for one and 100% for that. I think big beefy muscular abs are outstanding protection–and look hot as hell… Maybe not the most girly, but freaking fantastic in my opinion.
you’re right, Brute: lifting has made me very “straight-waisted” as my mother would say. Exactly the same width from ribcage to hips, even when I’ve had visible abs. It doesn’t bother me too much unless it’s going to make me unmarriageable or something.
I will admit up front, I have not read all the many pages of this thread. But, the title led me to believe it had something to do with Bulgarian training, or Bulgarian weightlifting. But the first couple of pages had nothing about weightlifting, a few pages picked randomly in the middle had nothing about weightlifting, and, the last couple of pages had nothing about weightlifting.
Since I am a weightlifting coach, and I was in Bulgaria fairly recently, hopefully you can understand why this topic got my attention. But, are you a weightlifter, or are you not?
Congrats on the start of a new school year! I for one was and am, one of those individuals that hate the start of the school year, but that’s because I looove summer time and laying out on the beach Plus grad school is a whole other animal and half the time I was studying during the summer!
I can attest to the waist thickening as well. Remember my old abs avi? Yeah, I’ll never look like that again - my body composition has completely changed! But like everyone said, if being athletic means being a bit less curvacious, than whatever. Plus i love knowing that despite being thicker, my abs are also denser, thus my back is protected, etc., etc. - and that makes me very happy
I should look into this BBing stuff to see how I can get an x shape going…

If you had read even Alisa’s first post you would have understood why she chose her title.

Glenn Pendlay, wow! Alisha trains for PL and other things, I do not think that she trains specifically for O-Lifting, but I will let her chime in on that. There are a couple of very good O-lifters in the over 35 forum, Carl Darby being one of them, and a few throwers who also train in O-lifting to help with track and field and highland games. Please fell free to come check out the O-35 forum any day of the week.

um, the title was a joke, and I don’t actually train O-lifting. But I do train in between all the other silly stuff in the log.[/quote]
No problem Alisa, lol. I just read the title of the thread and thought it was cool, then looked around for a “bulgarian” training log. Guess I should have read the first page a little closer before I posted!!!
squat:
10@45, 5@95, 5@115, 5@135, 5@155, 1@165, fail@175 (SO CLOSE to 175!)
powercleans: 10@65, 10/10/6/5@75
Tomorrow is the first practice with the powerlifting club. I’m so excited! Obviously I’m not in good shape right now but I’m not even all that embarrassed about it – what better way to improve than by training with people? Anyhow the other day one of the guys said I had a “great work ethic.” I’m going to assume that was sincere, because it’s nice to hear.
Side note: yesterday I slept 5 hours, as was my norm in college – felt like shit, as I usually did in college. Today slept 9 hours – felt amazing. Stayed awake in class and everything. I think I’m going to try a Granny-style sleep schedule. Since I can’t stay asleep past 7 am (goddamn sun) I have to go to bed earlier.
