That Bulgarian Thing

Jeez. Five strong ladies telling me I’m not fat. Must be my lucky day. (And, a very sweet boy in my life is emphatically pro-butt. Also likes spinal erectors, which is an unusual feature to compliment, but I’ll take it. )

Yes, bigger butt for the win! I know earlier you were kind of down about your lack of curves, but now you got bigger boobs and a bigger butt, those are definitely of the “curve” variety!

Well, we all know how I feel about your hot bod, Alisa.

But yes, I like big butts and I like em round…

ps. I can’t wait to try on my summer clothes!

deadlift day:
10@65, 5@155, 5@165, 5@195, 5@215
pullups: 2x10
db rows: 4x10 each arm @35
hypers: 4x10@25 behind head

Shitty, shitty deadlift form. Just didn’t have it. One of those incredibly demoralizing days when I think it’s all fucking pointless; I’ve gotten in terrible shape and I can’t even stand the sight of myself and I’m stressed about work and some things a friend said have been worrying me and I essentially want to give up on life.

Oh my. Slow down. And don’t give up on life. Otherwise you’re dead. And that sucks waaaayyy worse. I went through a period where I got really mired down in the pointless cyclical nature of this thing called living. How none of it mattered. We have children who grow up to make the same damn mistakes we do. Feel the same pain. And then just die themselves.

Then I just decided to change my perspective. A great little book: When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron. I always, always reach for it when I’m feeling really down.

Now on to business: What’s wrong with your deads?

Rounded back.

Yep. Been there, done that. You pull conventional? Reset between each rep?

Yes, conventional; I tend to touch-and-go but sometimes I force myself to reset. I relearned all over again a while back not to round, then I guess got sloppy as I was working up, and now my back has totally forgotten how to do it right.

Listen to mama Snapper. She is wise about life in general, and the deadlift in particular.

Chin up, Alisa! Those kinds of days hit us every now and then, just try not to let it drag you down.

And your pullups make me envious.

I have no words…just thinking positively for you!

go do something your really good at - I balance my shitness with the stellar so I always feel not too bad when leaving the gym.

Warning: You will soon be living in my neighborhood. Next time you feel down, I’ll give you a Vince Lombardi speech delivered in person. And if that’s not enough, a good beating usually sets the grad students straight.

I consider myself warned (and a little intrigued.)

Thank you for all the kind words, ladies, and I’m sorry for the emo moment. These kinds of bad days don’t last forever.

I understand where you’re coming from. I am prone to existential crises myself. I’ve found the way to best deal with them is to engage in a task that you can become completely absorbed in, that you enjoy, and that reminds you of your humanity-or your physical existence. A good long run used to do the trick for me, but that could partially be due to the release of endorphins. I imagine sailing would be a wonderful way to cope, or hiking. Take some nature time when you get a chance. Could be you are just feeling a lot of pressure with the semester coming to a close.

Back to the deadlifts . . . (I’ve been accused of being all work and no fun, not that existential crises are fun, mind you.) I used to do touch and go. And that’s where the back rounding would happen. I reset each rep now. But I don’t quite reset like Maschy or Kimba. It’s a very quick reset where I bring hips down and consciously put the arch in my back and then pull. Give that a try.

^and reset grip…thats a biggie for me…

6 30-s sprints.

Ah, the dreaded rounded back. I fight this battle every damn time I pull.

Drop the weight a little. Sometimes just 5 less lbs. will give you the breathing room to pull with an acceptable back. The only thing that helps me is to think about one thing right before the pull – butt out!

And all the guys in your gym are so thankful that you remember that, Kimba.
