Texas Says

The people who think gay marriage, and gay behavior in general, is wrong, really need to open up a little bit and learn about other cultures.

As an example, take the Etoro of Papau New Guinea. When they want sex for pleasure, they have sex with men. When they want to feed a growing fetus, they have sex with their wife (they don’t believe sex causes pregnancy). And they don’t believe a man can produce semen unless, as a child, he ingests semen from other males (meaning from age 12-17 all males suck off the older males, and yes, they swallow).

If you were born into that culture, you’d be performing oral sex on older males for about 6 years of your life, after which, any time you were horny you’d go bone one of your pals.
I have nothing against gays, support civil unions, and am all for cultural relativism. But this post is still really disturbing to me for some reason…

I’m not quite sure…hmm…YES, that is the absolute worst argument for gay marriage that I have ever read! Congrats man!

When did I say I was making an argument for gay marriage? All I said was certain people need to open up and learn about other cultures.

I meant for this to imply the following: other cultures exist where certain behavior, that some in our society disagree with, (in this case, being gay, or gay behavior) exists, is common, and is not ridiculed or looked down upon.

Here’s a less extreme example: the Teduray of the Philippines practice sex with whomever they want. They fully realize that heterosexual sex causes pregnancy. However, they have no words for “gay” or “homosexual” in their language, and someone we would consider “gay,” they consider “a woman with a penis.”

This behavior is tolerated and accepted among all in their society. Those who are gay have just as much standing as anyone else, and are free and encouraged to practice such behavior.

I don’t think anyone here truly gives a shit about the backwards ass sexual acts of some lost tribe in New Dumbfuck. I will simply remind myself from time to time, should the urge arise to visit the place, to keep my happy ass right here and go to Disney Land instead.

Hmmm…superstition, beliefs which have little or no logical basis in reality, acts performed motivated by traditional acceptance of these beliefs…this is starting to sound familiar…

In another “Yeah, doogie” post: Indeed, a lot of conservatives spend way too much time worrying about what other people are doing. What happened to small government, personal freedom, and low taxes? That’s what I’m talkin’ 'bout.
I have been wondering the very same thing.

This time you end with a comment which is pro gay marriage. Last time you began with one:

There are all sorts of civilizatons with all sorts of practices. Which ones should we adopt and which ones should we not?

I’ll give you the first rewrite for our society and then I’ll take a turn…

ROTFLMFAO!

indeed.

Zeb,

The point I’m trying to make (poorly I guess) is this: People in our society (and in this thread) believe gay marriage and/or gay behavior is wrong and should not be tolerated. Other societies exist where people think this belief is crazy. Likewise, some of the beliefs I described earlier (particularly those of the Etoro) seem crazy to us.

So the point is you can’t take your own beliefs too seriously, because millions of others out there think your beliefs are crazy, whatever those beliefs may be.

Oh, I understand your point, I just don’t agree with it!

I don’t happen to believe in moral relativism. I think there are absolute truths.

For example, in some cultures they kill their fellow man and eat him for dinner, their called “cannibals.” Just because someone from another culture practices cannibalism does not make it right.

I happen to think that murder is wrong too. And do you know what? I don’t care if any particular culture thinks that it’s great to sacrifice people in a volcano.

I know, I’m old fashion.
