Just trying to keep my options open for FBI, DEA, and INS. I don’t know much about what types of education they like, so it’s something that I’ll have to read up on.

OK just trust me on this one though, steer clear of a CJ degree. Please. If you are going to be military, that will be a big leg up for FBI/DEA. They won’t give a shit about a CJ degree.

Some degrees that FBI/DEA/the like tend to look for:

Accounting/Finance
Computer Science/IT
Engineering of any kind
Foreign languages (not necessarily a degree, but if you are fluent in language considered ‘critical’ - Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Russian, etc, that’s a big help)
Physical sciences (Math/chem/bio-chem etc)

If you want to work in intel, do get a foreign language degree. Even if you dont want to work in intel, a foreign language degree is very valuable to large multi national firms and financial institutions.

Couple that with a comp scie/ finance/ engineering degree and you can do intel or private sector work and make bank.

…more importantly why the army??

Seriously though college is just a stepping stone, no matter where you go you’ll only get out of it what you put into it no matter what name the school goes by. I’d pick a major you enjoy, but you should also be realistic about the availability of work and the job outlook. By the time you graduate, and especially after your tour if you get out, there should be a greater number of available jobs, but you never know.

Just don’t be one of those young adults that get a degree in art history and then complain the can’t find a job or pay off their loans…please don’t be like one of them.

Good luck and go navy!!!(Damn I wish the Corps had a football team, I hate cheering for the navy)

Haha, I originally wanted to go with the Marines, but changed my mind to go with the Army (don’t hate me! lol).

Anyways, I agree with what you said. I’m trying to find something that I’m interested in and something that I would enjoy. Still figuring that one out.

As for my first tour, I doubt that I’ll be going to the Stan if we actually do pull out at the end of 2014 :(.

I’ve considered enlistment, but everybody keeps telling me that I’m too smart and that I need to go to college and blah, blah, blah, blah.

You could certainly enlist and then figure out what you want to do education wise. The military will pay for most of your tuition while in and after an enlistment you could always get out, finish your degree using the GI Bill, and then become an officer.

I always had much more respect for a “mustang” than even the officers I knew that went to the Naval Academy. You connect with the troops in ways other brass never can. I think it’s the fact that we (enlisted guys) knew the mustangs cleaned toilets just like us as young marines.

Anyway just something to think about and don’t let anyone make up your mind for you. Not the recruiter, not your folks, and certainly not me. Remember it’s a decision you’ll have to live with for at least a couple of years and being in the military and especially going to war can affect you forever (cue dramatic music :).

I tell everyone I know, if they aren’t sure what they want to do enlist. You’ll learn a lot about yourself, grow up a lot, and at the very least have a nice entry on your resume.

Good luck

A&M, especially if military is an option

Anyone have any thoughts/opinions/past history with University of North Texas (UNT)?

I visited the geography department over ten years ago. I thought they had a solid plan for the future and appeared at the time well funded. I was a bit bummed when I asked students were a good BBQ place was and no body knew. Also, the Sonic was below par. That said, it has probably changed a bit by now.

Had a great music scene in the 90s, not sure about now. I believe Tool came out of Denton.

You are definitely on the right track. I’m always telling prospective students to consider the program and not just the school and the atmosphere because you want to make sure you are going to get the best education possible. Check out my site http://socialsciencedegree.net/ to weigh all of your options and get more information about the psychology programs available.
Also, if you’d like to get a head start in your job search, take a look at Psychology careers guide. Hope this helps in your decision. Good Luck!

It’s shit.

That’s not really fair, but for sciences, maths and engineering, they are terrible. UNT is strong in the liberal arts apparently but I have no first hand experience with that. EVERY single person I personally know who have taken hard science or math courses has described them as not being particularly rigorous and they didn’t really learn much.

If you are interested in any of the natural sciences, math, engineering, premed ect. The University of Texas at Dallas is an excellent small school that gives full scholarships out like candy if you have a >1300 on the SAT and decent grades.

We don’t have the university culture that schools like UT or A&M have. I personally like that however.

To be honest, assuming you have the grades (and I’m assuming you do), A&M and UT are literally the only two you should consider. Now, if you don’t want a big school that has a typical university experience (most people do), all bets are off and you shouldn’t consider either of the big 2.

In terms of the big 2, UT is the better academic school. Our undergrad (yes I go there and graduate soon- biased most likely) business and engineering schools are awesome. Accounting is actually the best undergrad school in the nation last I checked. I have done finance and loved it.

There is a huge difference between the campuses and cities as well (wait is a college station even a city?). Austin, everyone walks everywhere and you have a downtown that is unparalleled in terms of bars and party scene (don’t know if you want this). College station is small and only exists because A&M is there. Sports at both schools are very good and fun to watch.

All in all, both great schools. One thing to note, however, is that all the aggs claiming their school is some military powerhouse likely joined the core. Well, its not seen in the best light to many (sorta seen as a fraud). If you want a military school, neither is your best option.

Oh yeah, and read/watch Jim Rome’s rant on A&M before you make any decision haha.

Good luck

Haha thanks for the info, man. However, I’ve changed my mind. I found a school in Georgia that’s one of the six senior military colleges. I put my grades into the calculator that determines how much of a chance I have at getting in, and I’m about 300 points above the maximum score, so I’m not too worried.

The max score is 2900, I’m at about a 3200. I went on the website and looked at the majors they have, the programs, the sports, the ROTC program, and I really like it. I’m going to visit in June, so I’m pretty excited.
