Terrible Musical Choice at the Gym

I’m the gym manager of the largest gym in town (over 2500 members) and I can tell you that no one is happy with the music in the gym. We try to play “easy listening” in the mornings because that is when most of the old folks come in (some younger dudes complain about that) and switch it to some rock around 1-2 p.m. when the younger crowd starts coming in (of course we hear from a few older folks about that). If we forget to switch the music in the mornings we catch hell from the old folks.

Typically the old folks complain more than the other people (not just about music but everything) so we tend to grease the squeeky wheel so to speak by playing more middle of the road music. Point is, if your gym switched to music you liked they would get complaints from another group. There is no way to keep everyone happy so you typically have to go for the most bland stuff you can.

If I had my choice we wouldn’t play any music at all and just let people bring their own portable music device and pick their own tunes but the owner would never let that fly (just like he won’t let me get rid of the Smith machines). Oh well…

the movie “Anchorman” brought the song “Afternoon Delight” back into people’s homes. Beleive it or not, it even got semi-popular with younger people for a while, that my friend is why you heard it in your gym.

The gym I go to, hardly ever plays music.

It used to always be heavy metal cranked up real loud, which is great for weight lifting. Then, some of the old timers complained.

So the cd was switched to a mixed one with Black Eyed Peas - “Lets Get It Started” and 50 Cent - “In Da Club” among other crappy/pop/old songs on it.

Bad, I know… but what’s worse, the cd skips so you hear the same verses from terible songs over and over and over…

Two days ago in the gym I listened to that asshole Scooter spewing “…yeeeeeeeeeaaah I feel hardcore… yyyeeeeeeeeeeeah, always hardcore!” Three times. In 1/2 hour. Oh the pain…

Yeah but can we agree that it’s not the best song to have on the overhead when we’re trying to “sculpt our guns??”

Yeah. Bursting into laughter in the middle of a deadlift isn’t exactly what I’d call ‘smart’ bodybuilding. LMAO!

oooooh no! it’s that song!! I HATE that song! the afternoon delight song.
i hear that crap at work, good gawd I hate that!

seriously, who enjoys that stuff?

however, I do enjoy it when I walk into the gym and metallica’s ‘for whom the bell tolls’ is playing. now that is music you can deadlift to!

I don’t know! That’s why I can’t figure out why the heck it was in the rotation.

We’re going again in the morning. I’ll be sure to let you all know what they play this time. LOL!

BTW, Kilo, I’m from CT! I miss the seasons and my relatives.

I don’t notice the music at all when lifting after the first few minutes. I’m too focused on the workout. It all recedes into the background. For cardio it can be annoying. But I’m not doing much cardio these days-at least less indoors in the gym. Ipods or MP3 players work well, though.[/quote]

I’m the same way, kind of. I can ignore the crap that’s played on the gym speakers. But I can’t bring my iPod along or I’ll pay too much attention to the music. I’m very analytical when I listen (music is my profession), so if it’s something good, I listen hard. The Backstreet Boys, however, I can ignore, no problem.
