Considering how things are working out decribing it as ‘better used for other things’ is debatable.

This is a massive issue. There has to be a million articles written about it.

Many, many people feel the same way you do.

Thanks and sorry I am a dick sometimes

I am still wondering what you do to take care of the poor since you are so very concerned about them.

True, true, better being subjective here. To some bonuses in Executive pockets is “better”…

I must admit that I only donate to charities intermittently . Probably most would be I think 3 gallons of blood, I do pay my taxes  fed and state

Charity = giving freely
Taxes = giving because threat of jail or a gun in your face.

Charity does not equal taxes.

I meant to comment on this one earlier. Just because something is helpful or useful doesn’t make it a necessity. Water is a necessity, you’d die without it. A computer, I think you’ll survive.

Sure you will survive but it will be harder to find a job. It is similar to not having any presentable clothes to wear to interviews.

So you think the mentality of providing job seekers with tools they can use to get jobs is the reason we as a nation have so many problems? The kind of mentality that thinks that job seekers, living on our money, have the obligation to take all reasonable opportunities to increase their chances of getting a job?

It is pretty simple to me: If using Facebook is likely to land you a job, then you have the obligation to use facebook for the purpose of finding a job.

Then don’t try to extort money from people because you want their money to help the poor. Don’t expect from other what you don’t do yourself. That’s the corner stone of hypocrisy.
Truth is, you want the poor out of site and out of mind, and the best way to do that is make the wards of the state.
Except that won’t work, it’s been tried. Poverty will never, ever go away.

Oh, and there is a lot more than donations, you can get your hands dirty too.

It has been several years but I did some Habitat for Humanity work , I admit I should do more

Cool, when you do then demand we all do more…
SexMachine wrote:
I haven’t noticed that. I’ve noticed people complaining about the culture of dependency. That is the root of the problem is it not? You can see the end result in places like Greece where 50% of young people are unemployed.
The culture of dependency is the root problem (assuming you define it the same way as I do). However, it didn’t start, and is not exemplified by the youth. The youth of today did not create the 70 trillion in unfunded liabilities you are talking about.

Who would be most up in arms about getting rid of social security? Not the youth! They know they aren’t going to see a penny in any case. Medicare/Medicaid? Again, it is not teenagers and young adults who are over-burdening medicare/medicaid (excluding the few who are drug/alcohol addicts).

The youth in greece aren’t getting a damn thing from the government. You think they are happy with such high unemployment and would prefer to sit on their asses than to work? If so then you are simply out of touch. A cleaner on minimum wage in the US is much better off than they are.

Providing people with a temporary boost does not encourage a culture of dependency.
SexMachine wrote:
Further you argue that the unemployed should receive a free Obama phone and Obama computer to help them find work.
No. I argue that the unemployed should not be demonized for owning a mobile phone or having a computer because these tools help them find work.

You know why? Because I want them to find jobs!
SexMachine wrote:
Firstly, you need to establish that there is indeed wasteful military spending.
Sure. Lets use other western countries military spending levels as a baseline for reasonable military spending.

Either that is enough spending to keep them safe, as they are safe, or we are spending a ton of our money subsidising them.

If it is the former, then we can surely cut our spending significantly. If it is the latter, then we must surely stop subsidising them. All we are doing by subsidising these countries is allowing the creation of strong socialist cultures.

Either way it is surely wasteful and/or harmful spending.

What makes you think that? In my life I have seen world poverty drop considerably.

No, the mentality that you NEED a computer or smart phone to get a job is why we as a nation have problems. Libraries have free internet service. You can get a pay as you go phone without internet for dirt cheap. The idea that you NEED these things is ludicrous.

If you have access to these things, of course you would use them, why wouldn’t you. The point again is they are luxury items.

IMO there are too many variables it will be some where between every one starving to no one starving .

When it comes down to it, there will always be the have’s and the have nots. And yes, at the very basic level I supposed if you equate poverty with starving, it could go away. However, this thread proves the line in the sand for poverty changes. LOL @ the idea that “facebook” or internet and smartphones is the poverty line now…

Even the poor in America are the 1% in many parts of the world. It would help if a lot of people would take the time to understand that.
