Tax Research

Hi T-Nation,

I’m currently in a graduate tax course on entities taxation and I’m looking for suggestions on possible tax topics to research. Any suggestions, especially on hot topics in tax, would be greatly appreciated. Any topic will do too even though the emphasis of the course is on varies business entities.

I’m considering researching the impact IRC 1411 Net Investment Income Tax has on high net worth individuals, to give you an idea of what I’m looking for.

Thanks,
Chris

Both CountingBeans and LankyMofo would be good resources for you…they deal in those areas.

We’re currently working on mitigating it’s impact. Will be a couple cycles and clarification from IRS/Courts, but we’ll get this shit sandwich sorted out.

What I would like to see, however, is someone sit down and explain why comparing FS income to taxes paid, and making a stupid fucking facebook meme out of it to get leftist all frothy mouthed is moronic propaganda. In said piece you will need to explain carry-forwards and credits, differences in methods and recognition.

Lord help you when you have to explain unrealized gains to some of these people. But you are a stronger man than I, go forth, and spread knowledge.

I fyou want a less wise ass answer, I need to think about it more.

Lol, much appreciated.

I had hoped you’d chime in; although, I know it’s not the most calm time of the year for you…

Ya that’s what I was hoping. ZStrope (sp?) is also an accountant I believe and might be in tax.

Yeah, I’m a CPA but don’t spend so much time in the tax field. BUT I’m good at researching.

IRS website has some info on 3 recently released legislation that has significant tax implications to businesses.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Tax Provisions
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA)
Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE)

PWC Has a publicly available report on 2013 Accounting Hot topics. 28 pages of gold.

I don’t do any tax work so I can’t help. But CB’s idea could actually make for a really interesting paper on taxes and our culture in general.

If USMCCDS doesn’t write this, I nominate Beans to write it during his free time. Due date - April 15.

I would write it, but my professor is decidedly left leaning (although he’s a great guy) so I’m not sure it would be in my best interest…

You should hear him go on and on about the IRS targeting of conservative groups. I think the term hoopla has been repeatedly used. Oh and he admits to getting the majority of his news from John Stewart…

My jaw dropped when I heard that one. He’s one of the most intelligent professors I’ve had so I was like, wtf???

Welcome to college bro, I graduated in PolySci…from one of the most conservative colleges you can find, 95% of my professors were as you described.

College is a good time to be young, dumb and still a liberal. Save awaking for later in life, makes things easier on you.

Ya, unfortunately I’m closing in on 30. So I think I might be pushing my “awakening”

Ya, true story!

I have no idea why, but I swore you were younger than that, lol.

As for actual ideas this guy will pop wood for, lets consider the facts:

1)How the evil rich get away with avoiding tax, even though all the data shows that higher wage earners pay a higher percentage of the tax taken in than they receive in percentage of income.

  1. Why the Koch Brothers are the spawn of Satan but Soros is nothing more than a good hearted barrel of laughs.

no seriously:

You can examine both sides of the “carry” argument and just don’t draw the conclusion that the current treatment is appropriate.

You can explain how Citizen’s United was actually about a political video (much like Benghazi wink, wink) and analyze 501 application increases or decreases since then.

YOu can write about how giving churches TE status shorts the government tax revenue. (Going to be a boat load of research here. And I assume this guy doesn’t know a 990 from his asshole.)

OR…

You can write about the insane amount of current and incoming regulation on foreign sourced income, and cash held in foreign accounts.

But in reality, I would avoid anything Obamacare related. It is still so new, you are going to have a very hard time nailing down aspects of it. If there is anyone, and I mean ANYONE out there that says they are an “expert” on it, they are full of shit. This train wreak only has like 3 cars off the tracks. The rest of the carnage is still coming forward at 100mph.

In addition to what Beans listed above, how about discussing the controversial Non-Profit status of entities like the NFL or NCAA? I know that’s a hot topic.

Lol, ya I’m still a couple of years shy of 30, but I’m gettin there…

Thanks for the ideas! I definitely like the foreign sourced income one.

Ya this is a good one too. It was one of the ideas my professor suggested; although, different orgs. under a different sub chapter I believe (I’d have to look at the regs).
