Talking Libertarianism

Happy New Year to all of you!!

From Reason TV. Congressional New Year’s Resolutions.

Wow that number 3. “Over the past twenty years, congress has spent 17 million dollars settling sexual harassment cases.”

And some of you might enjoy this. I think he hits it on the head

Intellectuals don’t hate capitalism, some may of course, but as a general rule he’s wrong. His history of the Jews is also wrong as it wasn’t intellectuals who stole their wealth and expelled them but monarchs. And it wasn’t out of envy but greed. In fact, many leading intellectuals in the Middle Ages and Renaissance had Jewish tutors.

I think this guy sees some sociology professor on Facebook as an intellectual.

I like how he also confuses the government and intellectuals. I think most people would make a distinction between the two.

And is it just me or the way some people talk about the “market place” it’s as though they are talking about some divine force? I believe in capitalism but I don’t believe that the “market place” should be the most important determining factor when it comes to the course of humanity. Logic, reason, and compassion should be more important.

It needed change.

That was excellent. I’d be interested to take the 200+ level courses in that field and understand how to fix incentives.

Fantastic video. Thank you.

Everyone should have a basic understanding of these principles, ideally with examples that effect them personally.

Escaping the “Statrix” (think Matrix) @pfury @zecarlo (mainly b/c y’all were in the restaurant conversation yesterday I thought you’d appreciate this little vidya but didn’t want to detract TOO much from that thread)

That video is crap. First off we do know what a world without public education would look like as it hasn’t always existed. The question he avoids is why does public education exist in the first place. The way he explains it, it has always existed and we never ask if there is a better way. Well, we do know there is a worse way.

The whole teachers and their unions controlling education policy is a lie. Some districts don’t even have unions. Where there are unions they don’t control anything. Common core was not a union creation. Neither are inclusive classrooms. Neither is all of the standardized testing.

The failing public school line is a myth. Where schools are failing it is technically students from failing communities and families who are failing. More affluent communities have schools that are doing fine. It is also regional. Florida’s students are far behind students in Massachusetts.
