Lumpy-Im not a 21 year old college frat boy. Im a nearly 25 year old college graduate in graduate school, living on my own. Ive been living on my own for the last 4 years.
Why dont we take the money that the left and right use to pander to the special interests(like the environmentalists who have never even stepped into a damn forest) and use that to make the lives of these kids better? And lumpy, arent liberals like Hillary Clinton running New York? Why dont you ask her to help your homeless people? Why dont we stop wasting time filibustering judicial nominees and pass legislation that might actually do some good? Why dont the democrats stop writing memos on how they can use the war on terror to bring down the republican party and do something worthwhile? Why dont we get rid of these liberal middlemen in the schools(also known as facilitators and whatnot) and spend that money on better teachers and better schools? Why doesnt our congress spend more time legislating instead of fundraising? Why dont the democrats spend less time talking about how bad everything is and look at the things that are really good? The economy grew at a fastest rate in 20 years. Jobless claims are down. The war on terror is going better despite what the media tells you. Al Gore said today that we are no safer today than we were before 9/11. How many terrorists attacks have we had since 9/11?
Lumpy you are the typical liberal pessimist. Being conservative and having compassion is not a contradiction in terms. Did you notice the other day when the list of the most generous states in the union came out that the top 20 voted republican in the last election and the bottom 10 were the most liberal states in the union? If liberals are so loving of people, why are they less likely to give than conservatives?
Goldberg, just a few comments for now because I have to crash soon, but to comment on a few of your opinions…
First of all, most environmentalists aren’t here to save the trees for the trees sake, they are trying to save humankind’s future by looking at renewable resources, and the pattern of humans running ourselves into the ground
Most of those homeless people are on the street because Reagan closed all of the mental institutes.
Liberals would love to spend more money on the students and schools, but Bush’s programs seem to be doing the exact opposite, namely School vouchers.
None of us know how well the war on terror is going, neither democrats nor Republicans, everyone just tries to make it look better for whatever party they are in. The fact that there hasn’t been a terrorist attack since 9/11, besides all the anthrax scares and all the attacks on the soldiers, means nothing, as there were no attacks of that caliber before 9/11 either.
Finally, looking at donation amounts means nothing, because donations are not a sign of generosity in many many situations. Tax breaks, publicity stunts and wanting to look good in front of others, as well as other psychological reasons will change these stats. In addition, the republican party is no doubt made of a wealthier constituent than the democratic party.
Oh, I did forget to mention though…
In no way do I think that Republicans cannot be generous and kind. Your political views may seem contradictory at times due to different opinions on strategy, but I do think that more people with opinions like yours towards that less fortunate are needed on both sides of the political spectrum.
Wow, a person tries to make a positive statement and Lumpy has to turn it into a political attack.
Goldberg. Ignore Lumpy. He likes to pretend that he is compassionate but the only thing I hear from him is hate speech.
Back on topic, I knew a kid with mental retardation, and felt sorry for him. Not because of his mental disability, but because his family treated him almost like a dog. They didn’t beat him or anything like that, but they seemed to have no respect for this person.
I ran into another kid who obviously lifted weights, and while wasn’t humongous, he wasn’t too shabby. When he saw me he had to flex his arm to show he worked out too.
I see the biggest problem being that people don’t treat others with respect. They just want to avoid dealing with people like this. Most often these people will act as though throwing money (theirs or others) at what they see as a problem means they don’t have to actually deal with it.
"Liberals would love to spend more money on the students and schools, but Bush’s programs seem to be doing the exact opposite, namely School vouchers. "
Vouchers don’t decrease funding for schools. It provides an incentive for shitty schools to fix themselves before parents take their tax money and spend it elsewhere.
Yes, the degradation of worthy threads to “are too, are not” political debates gets tiring (Lumpster, consider your hands slapped) but hey, this is what happens when many diverse opinions are aired and electronic grudges are developed… Ce’ lavie. The best option might be to e-slap the offender and move on.
His Bergness offered a valid opinion, one that was accepted with the appropriate compassion that one would expect from a real T-man (or Vixen). Unfortunate that it was twisted into a poly debate faster than the shipping of a Clinton cigar order and with more zeal than Richard Simmons at a craft store but what’cha gonna do?..you could try…
Goldberg: Well said, it takes a hard man to be soft and as your history has shown you are the resident “Cantankerous Curmudgeon of Iron” and the nation applauds you for your consistency and trueness to self that demonstrates an all-too rare willingness to tell it like it is (or at least as you see it)
*Appreciative Golf Clap for Da 'Berg
Lumpy: Your well intentioned defence of all that is Liberal is indicative of a thoughtful, caring individual but the oft misplaced injection of politics into all too many discussions taints your good intentions with the same zeal and one trackedness that was a hallmark of US=GG. Thus your message gets muddled with the aforementioned “e-grudge” and is interpreted as nothing more than propaganda for the left and discarded as such. You DO have more to offer, please serve it up in a manner that would allow it’s true flavour to be savoured instead of all mixed together with the mashed potatoes, gravy and peas of your intellectual entree.
*Small nod to Lumpy for caring
Now, sure this may be heady advice from someone who writes hate mail to NFL coaches but if not me than who?
“Advice is like castor oil, easy enough to give but dreadful uneasy to take”
It should be noted that most of the states including the top state rated for being the most generous were among the poorest states in the union. kinda blows a hole in your giving theory.
The money for schools is already there. It needs to be spent better. I have two parents teaching right now. Im gonna be either teaching next year or getting a PhD. Im around teaching 5 days a week. I know where the money goes. Most of it is wasted on curriculum directers and stupid shit like that who really do nothing at all but sit in their ivory towers in the central office. Not to mention that the superintendent gets 100,000+ a year. Couldnt he live pretty comfortable on 70,000 and let them hire one more teacher. There a thousand examples just like that. Education programs are filled with people who dont do any teaching but know all there is to know about teaching. They are the ones wasting money. The money is there. Its in the wrong place. Throwing more money at it will not make it better. Money never solves problems. Mo money mo problems.
Let it be known that I actually started all that shit, but in a joking way, because Goldberg is always railing against money spent by liberals.
I won’t argue here, because it obviously does not good, though 90% of what Goldberg said was just flat out wrong.
But.
I volunteered in high school and through college at a wonderful camp called Anderson Woods, a place owned by a Nunnery where mentally challenged adults and children would basically come to summer camp for a week. I used to cook for them.
In almost any dispute politically, the answer can boil down to compassion - getting out there and working with the people you categorize by number of percentage. This applies to both liberals and conservatives. Got a problem with the homeless? Work at a shelter for a few months and see if your views change, or a battered woman’s home, or a veteran’s society…
What he said, bungholes, is that he had personally found doing some work with the handicapped rewarding, and that those of you on this board who consistently deride and belittle and mock those who have never had the oppurtunities you enjoy might consider developing some compassion. Guess what, he’s right. Mock the mentally ill all you want in the anonymity of the big bad net if it pumps you up, but don’t do it in my presence because I find it despicable. Goldberg, on behalf of the frisbee throwers, thanx for helping.
How the fuck did a thread talking about Cuba playing a handicapped person in Radio and probably going to win an Oscar to a fuckin political debate? Lumpy, you’re a dick.
“lumpy, arent liberals like Hillary Clinton running New York?”
No, the Mayor of NYC and the governor of NY state are both Republicans. It has been that way for many years. Homelessness is definitely UP in NYC, and the unemployment rate here is higher than other places in the US.
I just find it ironic that you (Goldberg) support George Bush who condones the government executing the mentally handicapped if they commit a violent crime (even though they may not understand the gravity of their crimes). Yet you wax all mushy about a game of frisbee.
Lets face it, it is unusual to hear that Repugs are spending any time thinking about other people who are less privelged than they are. The usual message I hear from you is “Greed is Good”.
And yes, the economy expanded at a fast rate… over a period of several weeks. That’s hardly cause to pop the champagne. “Jobless recovery” is an oxymoron.
But I digress…
The RADIO thread was dissing a MOVIE. I doubt you finger waggers actually know or care about how funding for social services is being slashed, something that actually affects the quality of life of REAL RETARDED PEOPLE.
I am completly in the middle when it comes to political parties, politics, ect but i must say from experence my fiance has worked in special services for years, that it is much harder to get the needed funds for very simple and human things under a republican administration, they just dont put these issues in the priorities, my fiance’s faimily is as right as right can get and she still votes democrat because of the way she calles it respect these administartions give to social services and i will take her word for it she lives it every day in the administration level, I also work at boys and girls club and i know that our funds were also cut under the bush administration, like i said i am just sharing perspective i in no way claim to be a political bastard…big martin

Lumpy dammit sometimes I’d like to smack the taste out your mouth.
All of your political correctness just went out the window when you said “REAL RETARDED PEOPLE” Now there is a phrase littered with sensitivity.
Fuckin’ A dude, why can’t Goldberg make a post about helping challenged kids without you drawing battle lines between democrats and republicans? I cannot figure this out.
