Picked up an Electro Harmonix Small Clone chorus pedal (as made famous by Kurt Cobain on Come As You Are) and holy shit I love it. Just a smidge of chorus makes such a difference to your tone. Thickens it up lovely.
The Gibson through a Marshall with a Big Muff and the Small Clone is the thickest, creamiest, warmest tone on Earth. Could not possibly love it more.
You can look into modeling boxes like the Zoom etcā¦
After compression, EQ, and compression on the other side, I just have come to point of laughing at people so worried about minute tone differences on their end. Whether you mic a cab, or use a high end modeler, by the time you end up with a finished, mixed track, EQāed and compressed, then posted on YouTube with THEIR compressionā¦
I donāt know man⦠Iām just rambling. I run my Zoom directly into my laptop, and EQ the shit out of it, and run it through filers IF I CANāT adjust the setting on my amp models to sound right on the recording. But Iām trying to sound like me, not anyone else.
I use a blue yeti USB mircophone. When I bought it I researched the topic heavily. This is the best option (as far as I know) without getting a MIDI interfacing console etc. I like it a lot, but I know a lot of audiophile would look down upon it.
side rant: wtf is with musicians who canāt play, write, structure decent music to save their lives, but they will critique equipment as if itās the one thing holding them back from making great music.
Iām going to go out on a limb and say itās plenty good enough for a demo or even an indy EP release lol.
But you arenāt wrong on the above bold at all.
Tone chasingā¦
Everyone gets caught up in it I think from time to time. It spans hobbies too. You see it a fair amount in the shooting community too. Guys spending $3000 on a bench AR and getting out shot by someone who can shoot and has a $1,000 MOA rifleā¦
I think part of it is also that gear is fun and easier than learning complex scales and techniques.
thanks, mate. Thatās exactly the sort of thing I was looking for.
Asked this question on a guitarist forum and got about ten million different answers. Looks like Iāve got some homework to doā¦
I actually have an old Shure SM58 kicking about. I wonder if I can just rig that up somehow. Doubt itād be good for recording guitar and vocal at once thoughā¦
As I was typing it I was thinking of how universal this pet-peeve of mine is. However, I also had a specific guy in mind who went to school for music recording but couldnāt spell diatonic.
Talkers vs. Do-ers, Iām more of a Do-er guy (with a mix of āover-thinking itā in there as well) and I am developing a strong disliking for the talkers of the world. You see, thereās this guy at work who is a talker, but never really does anythingā¦
In this specific instance though⦠If dude had a good ear and ran the board well, I couldnāt care less if he could shred or even plink out chop sticks.
On other news, I cut my ring finger on my fret hand pretty bad on a table saw over Memorial day weekend. Wound is healed but the nerves were straight fucked. I canāt fret a note without superior pain. Kept 100% movement and the scar will be pretty tame, but it will be months before I can play againā¦
Itās really my only recourse for the next couple of weeks. It isnāt like when you first learn to play and your finger tips are tender and just need a beating. This is, honestly, what babies must feel when they touch stuff. Crazy sensitive.
Iāve been rubbing it nonstop in the hopes of training my brain that itās okay to touch that area, so I can play and fix my callous.
Best part is, I took such a huge chunk of flesh out, when the stitched it up, my original callous is now on the left side of my finger, and mostly under the nail, lol. Also cut a chunk of the bone out.
The only upside is that thereās an incredible feeling you get when you havenāt played in a while and start up again. Every lick you can play suddenly sounds amazing. Of course then after like a full day of playing itās boring again but at least briefly thatās going to be fun!
Also, just general guitar question, I play a strat but my finger tips are fat as fuck and I have huge hands for my height, and since I enjoy shred guitar, my technical ability has far surpassed my knowledge of guitar and general gear. Any ideas on a guitar with large frets and a big neck but still has good high end single coil sounds? Obviously if budget wasnāt an issue Iād try to buy a fancy Shawn Lane-esque Charvel or something. Iāll end up making a trip soon to a guitar center but itās 45 minutes away so hopefully one of you guys can send me in the right direction.
