Swim Your Own Race

Ai yi yi…that Resolutioner…ANOTHER reason I’m glad my gym is my garage!

good work snapper ! Keep it up.

Glad you are able to train like you want! I really think the layoff did your body good, your numbers
are looking esp good. I did cringe a bit when you said you are squatting wider again, but you know your
body best.

No one gets judged for execution beauty on the platform. I would trade form for a wee bit of talent in a heartbeat.

Could be a mistake. But I just naturally gravitate to a wider stance.

Yesterday: bench.

And the grim realization that I am lifting my butt on every rep. Oh, woe is me. Damn long shins.

Ahh, well. All the variables are what keep me interested in the sport.

I look like a spider in the vid, which I will post at a later time. Looking for feedback on what the hell to do with my legs to keep my ass down!

Something else, I think.

As others have said great form on the squats. It seems like you are looking up really high, do you pick a spot out on the ceiling?

As far as keeping your ass down on the bench goes, if you have a spotter I would try your feet way out in front like Dave Tate benched for many years.

You can still get good leg drive but there is no way for your ass to come up. Definitely need to have a spotter using this form though because if you get out of the groove with the bar moving too far backward towards the rack there is no way to save it and the bar is going down.

I agree with Up.

The resolutioner needs to work on his feet placement. A proper demi-plie looks like this:

I do something similar to DBs suggestion. First off be happy leg drive is happening. To avoid it get into your set up and prior to lift off drive the legs hard. If your butt lifts then widen/lengthen your bench stance until you can drive hard without lifting.

It makes me really happy to see you squat!

I’ve spent a couple of days with a sore right hip (too much, too soon…I’ll never learn). I’ve concluded that I really need my hips and have a new appreciation for them.

I don’t know what a demi-pile is but there isn’t anything proper about those photos.

I am a neck craner. But I’m not looking at the ceiling.

Won’t this just kill my arch?[quote]DBasler wrote:

I agree.

Benching from Wednesday.

DL day: 8s

RDL warmup
8/45
5/95

Conventional pulls
8/140
8/150
8/161
8/172

Weighted hypers
Lying hammie curls
Shrugs
Pullups 7,7,6,5,5

Love the vids. Solid work.

Can’t wait until I’m not on the page in my log with the guy in the unitard. Thanks again for that, Jack!

Yesterday. Felt so weak.

Squat
8/45
5/65
5/81
5/88
5/93
5/100
5/106

Pullups
5

GMs to 45 degrees
3/10/85

Leg extension machine
Planks
Eccentric pistol squats
Reverse hypers

and I would suggest wide stance with flat feet, but I definitely don’t have long shins (or long anything)

and after watching the video, that isn’t a regulation bench is it? I think a regulation bench is a tad taller. Your form looks really good.

Not a regulation bench! Way too low! And hooray for that.

I’m trying the wider stance. But there’s a happy medium between how wide I can get so I don’t lift my ass and also don’t roll my feet in since my fed requires flat feet.

Always happy to have you visit, Vik.

I won’t whine. Because no one likes whiners. But I’m really struggling in bench.

That last set was hard. How pathetic is that? And that’s with ass lift as well.

I tried a lot of different setups today. Nothing worked too well. Our old friend G1 is visiting next month. We’re supposed to train together. So I’m going to see what kind of pointers he can give me.

Instead of wallowing in bench frustration, I’m focusing on how well my DL is going at the moment and the gains I am surprisingly making in squat despite a fucked up hip. How lucky am I?

One might think that was a crappy bench until suddenly realizing it’s almost bodyweight for you.

Watched the video several times and here is my advice for what it is worth.

Your setup is textbook EliteFTS. The problem I see is despite the great setup your getting no leg drive at all. Your ass is coming up as you are bringing the bar down eliminating the possibility of getting any leg drive at the bottom. Your arch cuts a couple of inches off of your ROM but still doesn’t make up for the lack of leg drive.

I had exactly the same problem as you when I tried to set up like you do (my arch doesn’t look near as good as yours does). After watching I don’t think you need to move your feet way forward as I suggested before watching the video or even out very much.

In your next bench session set up like you normally do but try moving your feet forward until they are in line or just slightly behind your knees and out a couple of inches. This next part will be contrary to what you have heard before but works for me. Keep your upper body tight but don’t worry about concentrating on keeping your lower body tight as you lower the bar. When you reach the bottom, make a conscious effort to drive your feet hard into the ground, contract your glutes and try to incorporate leg drive while keeping your ass on the bench.

This is the way I’m benching now and I have been making progress. I still don’t feel like I get alot of leg drive but I taped a set the other day of a max paused 3 rep set (Albeit at a terrible angle-it’s posted in my log earlier this week) and it is clear from the tape I’m getting a pretty good amount.
