How does a “volunteer” get “forced into service”.[/quote]

There should have been an ‘or’ wedged between volunteer and forced.

In the military there is a term called, “voluntold” – as in, I was voluntold by my sergeant to police the parade ground for cigarette butts.

This word is used to describe a task, etc., that someone else was asked to do but then has it “delegated” to lesser persons.

Huh?! You only paid $100 per month into it. How much compensation do you think is fair? You still got paid more than you paid in.

BTW, I used the GI bill to finish school too. I had to take out loans of over 30K for undergrad.

Just because we wore a uniform does not entitle us to a piece of pie. It’s not like we were unpaid volunteers forced into service.

I’d say wearing a uniform and serving in combat DOES entitle you to more than a piece of the pie.

Then you could extend that to all employees who wear a uniform in State employment – firemen, policemen, DEA, FBI…all State employees are doing the Heroes Work – what about their pie?

Notice I said COMBAT, not “walking the beat” or “flying a desk” somewhere safe in Langley, VA.

Not to take away from those professions, they are very important too.

I just want better for Veterans, all Veterans who’ve served in combat. They deserve the best, and it finally looks like years of apathy from Congressional budgetaries and the rest of the nation may go to the wayside.

They all do get a piece of the pie and they get paid more too.

The Dems are going to play politics with this to turn it into an election issue - they’re essentially tacking the GI Bill stuff onto an unpalatable bill so that either it won’t pass, and they can blame the Republicans, or Bush will veto, and they can blame the Republicans:

It’s already beginning, with the DNC handmaidens at the NYT:
