Wow.

Who would have thought that a story about a man who’s sent down from above by his father, has extrordinary powers, and saves the world - would have Christian overtones.

Shocking.

Not just that but references to Superman as the world’s “Savior” and a scene towards the end of the movie as he falls to earth with he arms outstretched and feet together in the shape of a crucifix. I know I’m not the only one who saw that.

This shit is so overdone; every director thinks he’s super clever because he has one of his characters in a crucifix pose at one point.

Clever? I am more amazed that some of you didn’t understand what inspired the story to begin with. Superman has ALWAYS been a Christ story from the moment they came up with his currently accepted origin. This isn’t something new.

Anyone with any religious background at all got that vibe from the very first movie released in the late 70’s. It simply wasn’t as blatant so perhaps it “flew” over the heads of those who claim to be against all religious influence. I am still wondering if this is upsetting the original poster…and why.
the reason you think that the original poster was upset is because you interpretted the post in some very strange way or have a chip on your shoulder or something…

Many writers have done Superman as a Christ-like figure. Morrison, Moore, Waid (in the appropriately-titled “Kingdom Come”)… it’s as common as it gets.

It helps to remember, though, that Superman’s two creators were a couple of poor Jewish kids.

Just thought of a few more similarities with the christian story.

Superman died once and was resurrected (when he fought Doomsday)

Also Supermans earth parents are humble farmer types, like Jesus’ dad who was a carpenter.

Im sure theres more thats all I can think of for now.

Gee, dumbass, both times I asked IF he was upset and why. You then took this and came to the conclusion that I am simply saying he is upset? Do you know what a “question” is? If so, how does that relate to a chip on my shoulder for asking it? Please, ride someone else’s ass now.

Actually I think there’s nothing hidden about it. Did everyone else notice the extremely strong christian overtones to the movie? Portraying superman as the savior, they even used that word a few times in the movie!

On the news tonight there was a big thing about how he no longer says he stands for the american way… it was the only part they cut from

“stand for truth justice and the american way”

havent seen it but the news reckons he still says that he stands for truth and justice…

apparently the film makers want the movie to make money overseas
It is a little retarded for them to make an issue of that. The JLA (Justice League of America) became simply the Justice League over a decade ago. It isn’t just about making money overseas but the realization that the entire world now pays attention to these characters. If they stand for justice, why just American justice?

Yes, but starting in July, they go back to being the Justice League of America.

Actually, for the past 6 or 7 years, they’ve just been the “JLA”. No meaning to the acronym, like KFC.

And, besides, it’s not like their HQ is a 5th Ave mansion: they watch the world from the moon lately.

On the release of the newer animated series, they leave the “America” out completely.

didnt u know? america is evil these days…
no profits in other countries if you say “the american way”

And Messianism is more prevalent in Judaism than in any other religion.

Give me a break, Prof X is right what’s the fuss about? Star Wars, The Phantom Menace was hugely done with Christian overtones. So much that my brother in-law who was a big Star Wars fan never saw any more of the Star Wars Prequels. It’s just a movie folks.

The orignal tag “…and the american way.” was to sell comics in the US when Supes was created, I don’t think in 1941 they wanted the Germans to be buying comics on American values. Things get updated, Star Trek now has the opening dialogue as “To boldly go where no one has gone before…” changed from “… where no man has gone before.”

Shit, it’s a movie, man. I fond this comical to even debate.

Almost correct. “The American Way” has always been evil.

To act primarily from a basis of seperation is evil. Rich people are evil. Consider: “Behind every great fortune lies an even greater crime.” Now consider an alternative: “While there is a lower class, I am of it.”

The “American Way” is to get rich, and fuck anyone in your path. This includes externalization of costs, such as pollution and underpaid employees who then need public support. The “American Way” is based on a virulent strain of carnivorous capitalism, which grants privledge according to wealth, and wealth according to privledge. The “American Way” has no mind, and even includes shitting where you eat, and selling the rope with which they hang you.

Almost everything you see is evil, loud and boisterous. Good doesn’t need any advertising. The rewards of good might be less externally obvious, but deeper felt and true.

Waid (in the appropriately-titled “Kingdom Come”)
Waid nothing. Alex Ross conceived the story, wrote the original proposal, and was involved with the story’s development after Waid was tapped for writing duties.

Both sets of parents are essentially adoptive.

Speak for yourself.

You have described the worst in mankind. This has been around forever in every country.

The American way is to overcome the greed and actually try to do more good than bad.

I wish the Islamic terrorists would adopt the American way. The world would be a better place.

Sorry for the hijack.

You’re not bitter or anything are you?

The phrase “The American Way” is subjective and means different things to different people.

To me, the “American way” means, we dont live in an oppressive, dictator ran society.
We have freedoms many other countries dont allow.

You can bash our president, our government and our country and get away with it.
In other countries you’re put to death for something like that.

and lets not even start on women.
No where else on earth are women as free as they are here…

so the “American way” = not all the shitty other ways that other countries have

If you feel it means greed and crime, then that’s you’re perogative… but again it’s subjective…

Who are you referring to?
Are you saying Jesus was gay?

(Thought I’d ask before I got the wrong message.)

(If so, give me a freakin’ break!)
No, no. I was just referring to other threads that talked about Superman being gay or a “metropolis-sexual”.
Northcott wrote:

Superman was allegedly based on a book called Gladiator by Philip Wylie, son of a Presbyterian minister.

Whenever I see this kind of diatribe against America by an American (at least I assume because you list Michigan as where you are posting from) than my next question always is Why do you live here? There is a big world out there many places to chose from that are sympathetic to your views. I mean if you hate it so much here, it makes no sense to live here. I am not saying you can’t live in America and dislike it but you seem to loathe it.

“Capitalism and Freedom” Friedman

“Capitalism” Raynd

and, why not, “Atlas Shrugged”,you need to be deprogrammed man, capitalism= good, socialism=evil…

No political freedom without pivate property, no economic development without some people being better at the game than others, and if you think capitalist countries fuck up their environments, I only say Bitterfeld…

It is a small east German town…

Everywhere else sucks too. Many other places suck worse than before, since incorporating “The American Way” into their popular culture. But at least here I can bitch about it, and only have to face the same stupid questions such as these.
