I am very pale and don’t get out in the sun much.
How much time should I spend outside each day if I want to develop a nice golden tan?
How much is too much??

I am pale also, but I prefer to avoid tanning as much as possible, and try to wear sunscreen or sunblock as much as possible to prevent damage. Not the popular way to go, but oh well.
The best way to tan is as long as possible. Put on a broad spectrum sunscreen, (both A and B) and tan either before 11 am, or after 2:30 pm. Start off with 5 to 10 minutes, once or twice a day. You really want to stimulate the tan, and let the skin respond.
Find the supplement L-Tyrosine. Many people have said they tan quicker and better when they take the amino acid. If you care, there is 3,000 mg of L-Tryosine per serving of Power Drive.
I got a lot of sun in my 20’s, and started to notice my skin didn’t look too good up close. Over 10 years later, my skin looks a lot healthier, but the results of too much sun is obvious to me.

Won’t using sunscreen block the “tanning” effect?
How did your skin look when you did tan? Did you just burn?
Pale people normally get all fecklererly(sp?). I’m irish, so I don’t tan well either. I just use L’oreal Sublime Bronze Self tanning lotion. It works as a sunblock, and tans your skin nicely.
Vampires can’t tan. Sorry.
God intended you creatures to amuse him during night time only. Can you imagine the conflicts of interest it would develop for Him if you started going out during the day?
God is amused with only one species at a time. Consider that next time you’re not happy with your skin color.

I was looking for that stuff yesterday but I couldn’t find one that was a sunblock too…

He’s got big gums but not big teeth. Don’t think he’s a vamp.

I got mine at Walmart :). It has spf 15 sunscrean.
I’m also pale, and have had good results by staying out for 45-60 minutes a day for a couple of weeks with anywhere from 4-8 SPF on. I know a dermatologist would cringe at this SPF level, but I don’t tan at all with anything higher.
Just be careful and don’t tan too much at once; it takes a while for your skin to build up new pigment.

Sunscreen will slow a tan, and help prevent a burn. Those spf numbers show how much less UV damage you get, at least for UV-A. Those numbers mean that it takes that many minutes to get one minute of unprotected UV-A rays. If you divide 1 by the spf, you get the percentage of UV-A that actually gets to your skin. At spf 15 your body quits producing vitamin D because you don?t get enough stimulation.
Getting a minute of UV over 6 or 8 minutes is better on your skin then getting it all in one minute.
I burn real easily, and have repeatedly. Not a good thing. I also didn?t learn until later that UV-B is not blocked by glass like UV-A. I also never have had a real deep tan, not knowing the right way to tan back then, and now that I do, I generally avoid it.
I think I forgot to slowly adding a minute every other day or so as your tan increases. If you ever notice you are getting close to burning, pull back. But once you find that time where you start tanning, slow down how often you increase.
I agree with the previous poster that we fair-skinned people are meant to tear it up at night.
I was just in Florida for 6 days, wore SPF 48 sunblock, and still got sunburned. I just figure that i’ll keep it alive at night, and the more pale people out at night, the less lighting there has to be (I glow)

Al? Al Shades?
Getting a good tan depends on the angle of your body to the sun

I really don’t think this is true. UV hits the skin, causing immediate damage. The body responds by getting darker to protect itself.
UV hits the skin, you get darker. Simple enough? Slower is safer.
And before people start talking about burns turning into great tans, what actually happens is that the tan is under the burn, so all you do by burning is cause heavy damage to the skin, and increase the risks of skin cancer dramatically.
The angle of your skin to the sun does effect how much you tan or burn simply because you are being hit with more rays. for example if I walk around all day with no shirt on, my shoulders will get way darker than the rest of my skin simply because they are taking the sunlight at the most direct angle. If I lay down in a chair and face the sun the side of me facing the sun will take the rays evenly.
