Summer Reading

Soooooo, what’s everybody read this summer?

Myself:

-“Think and grow rich” by Napolean Hill

-“TR The Last Romantic”, A biograpy on Theodore
Roosevelt by H.W. Brands

-“Intellectual Morons” by Daniel Flynn

-“Under The Bar” by mr. lean and mean himself Dave Tate

-“Living Buddha, Living Christ” by Thich Nhat Hanh

I still have a few sitting on the shelf that I want to get to, like David McCullough’s “1776” and “Holy War On The Home Front”.

Only so much time in the day :-]

Interesting thread. I’d appreciate it if people could also write just how useful each book was and what it’s about.

I’ve read:

-The power of intention by Wayne Dyer
which is about how our intentions do affect our lives and how to use them to benefit ourselves. I thought that it was a really good book. I haven’t really put this stuff to use yet, just finished reading it. But I’ve heard good things.

-The way of Qigong
An excellent book that details numerous Qigong methods as well as the philosophy. Also discusses related topics like diet. Very well referenced and the author is extremely knowledgeable.

-Mind Magic by John Laurance Miller
haven’t finished reading even most of this yet. It’s about how to make better use of our mind for learning. Good reviews given on Amazon.

I haven’t done much reading this summer. Most of it was online. I highly recommend the Stevepavlina.com website. Lots of personal growth and productivity tips. If you don’t believe what he’s saying, check out his bio, it’s impressive.

This was the second book that I’ve read w/r/t T. Roosevelt. I’m really becoming a big fan of his. Not just as the President of the United States, but as a person overall. He led an adventurous life that any man could be proud of. Without turning this into a politics thread, I think the country would benefit from a conservative such as Teddy R.

“Living Buddha, Living christ” was a book that I really enjoyed as well. The book discusses the many similarities between Buddha and Jesus Christ. It kind of represents where I’m at spiritually right now. Orginized religion/Catholisism has appealed to me less and less over the years.

More and more I’m being drawn to the teachings of Buddhism. I find alot of peace there.

Here’s my list. By the way Flamer, read “1776”, its a great fucking book. One of my favorites.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius- Dave Eggers
Great book, a memoir of sorts from a guy who’s parents died within six weeks of each other when he was twenty. For those that have an overactive mind and are half insane, it hits close to home. Not as good as You Shall Know Our Velocity, but up there.

Rat Bastards- John “Red” Shea
Memoir about the life of an Irish mafia guy from South Boston. Interesting story, but he ain’t a great writer, and many from Southie say he’s full of shit. Either way, good read.

Oh, Play that Thing- Roddy Doyle
Novel about a guy escaping the Irish Civil War and coming to America to get by the IRA, which he was once a part of. Not as good as the prequel, A Star Called Henry, but still a decent read. Read the first one though, it’ll knock your block off.

The New York Trilogy- Paul Auster
Great three book set concerned not only with detective work, which Auster is fond of, but also of blurring the lines between the writer, the author, the narrator, and the characters. If you’re a writer, or interested in the thought process, you have to get these. Really some of the best fiction I’ve ever read.

Rise To Rebellion- Jeff Shaara
Novel about the time period from 1760-1776 in America. Takes the viewpoint of four guys- John Adams, Thomas Gage, George Washinton, and Ben Franklin, and writes each chapter from one of their perspectives. Made Sam Adams, “Irish’s Hero of 2006” BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ.

The Glorious Cause- Jeff Shaara
Sequel- Novel about 1776-1783, written in same manor as the above. SECOND BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ

You might not think it from my politics, but I actually love American History, and the above are the two best novels about that time period out there, hands down.

Irish,

I think you’ve added a few books to my reading list :-] I’m definately going to give those a go. As soon as I’m done with “TR, The Last Romantic”, I’m getting into “1776”

Another book that I’ve read previously was “A Republic, Not An Empire” by Pat Buchannan. Maybe you’ve already read that one, but if you haven’t, it’s pretty good. It’s a pretty good read on the history of U.S. foreign policy IMHO.

Even though it’s written by Buchannan, I think you would like alot of the points he makes. I know it made me rethink alot of the concepts I had previously held w/r/t U.S. foreign policy.

I cannot wait to read the second book.

Finally caved in and am reading “The DaVinci Code”.

Also read “Game of Shadows” and “Cinderella Man”
