So either the magnesium and zinc is just as good as ZMA - or they both do nothing ; )

Actually, as far as supplementing Magnesium, the body needs a certain ratio of magnesium to calcium, so supplementing just one of them, in that respect, is not only probably not necessary, but actually bad for you.
Well I guess I will stop what’s been working for me then…

Wow that was a close one…

I wonder if while you’re taking it consistently, your body “Self-regulates” by not craving foods that have zinc, so that if you stop taking it, you actually become somewhat zinc defecient, making it harder to sleep. People seem to be convinced of its effectiveness, but I wonder if there’s not a more round-about explanation. The body is sneaky like that, after all.

Magnesium is a muscle relaxant, that’s what makes you sleep so heavily when you’re taking ZMA. Nothing sneaky about it. But again, they are just minerals, if your body doesn’t need them, you are unlikely to feel any effects whatsoever.

It’s also entirely possible that the subjects they selected just weren’t trained that well. I bet they were probably just guys who “train” and subsequently weren’t deficient in zinc or magnesium. It’s damned hard to find serious trainers or athletes for studies.

I’m recalling a line from a seminar write-up on this site where only one guy in the writer’s group tested normal for zinc, but he was on the “menstrual training cycle”, four days on, 28 days off.

Also, I’m pretty sure that calcium is absorbed over zinc and magnesium (this is why it says to avoid dairy when you take ZMA). If you take the generic pills that are mostly calcium carbonate, you might be getting calcium instead of zinc and magnesium.

Charles Poliquin, he was talking about his testing for zinc deficiency. He might have been joking about him too. He says he can’t remember any athletes he gets passing the zinc tally.

Nah, I don’t think that’s it.

My eating habits don’t change when I take ZMA or not take it. I eat according to my goals, and the main thing that changes if I’m trying to gain or lose is the amount of total calories, fat and carbs.

My meat (protein and zinc) sources are pretty much the same all the time, day after day, year after year (chicken, beef, eggs, cottage cheese, cheese, protein powders, chicken sausage, turkey bacon, raw nuts, etc.).

I’m not sure there is anything that would have more or less zinc or be able to cause enough of a difference to make up for me not taking the ZMA.

It has also been discovered that zinc aids to assist couples with fertility issues. One can increase semen levels by taking high doses of zinc (50 milligrams).

Particularly, men with a low sperm count can benefit by zinc supplements. Also, women can use zinc supplement to conceive because it affects the hormone levels. Also, it has been proven to aid the health of our hair, and facilitate the healing of skin wounds and conditions, such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
zing!

Not to mention that Zinc is in pretty much every immune booster / anti-cold thing on the market. right?

whatever, even if it is a scam it is dirt cheap, well worth it for even just a placebo effect.

It does a… my body good.

I think vitamin companies and supplement companies could do better with other scams then selling the public capsules of ZMA that they probably don’t make a ton of profit on. Anyone agree?

I bet people would be much more willing to spend even more money on other ‘unproven’ things… wait…

hater

I use ZMA, actually just started. Not hating on that.

I just think that people have a insatiable appetite for the “next big thing”.
