Student Financial Help UK

ive got myself into a bit of problem need some advice.

i have got two bank accounts with different banks; first trust and halifax.

my first trust bank account has a interst free Overdraft of 800 pounds (extendable to 1800)
my halifax has an interest free overdraft of 500 pounds (extendable to 2750)

basically i have used the whole overdraft that i have on both accounts.
im going on holiday on tuesday and i have no money.

i got a cheaque on wednesday for £130 from my uni and i put it into my first trust account on friday. but Northern Ireland has a bank holiday on monday 14th. (not sure about the rest of the uk) and they say it wont be cleared untill thursday.
so my questions are,

are the bank likily to extend my overdraft on tuesday by the cheaque amount as they know i have that money coming in in a few days?

should i attempt to extend both accounts overdrafts? any thing i can do/say to make my attempts better?

is this monday a bank holiday in the rest of the UK, if its not would i be able to ring the halifax main office and attempt an extension to my overdraft on monday or would i only be able to do it when my branch is open?

any other advice greatily received!

Scott

bump…

Hey Scott - I would have thought that they would extend your overdraft no problem. I needed an extention on mine last week due to a major payout on a car repair. I was going to move money from another account but it would have taken four days.

The extended overdraft was set up within 24 hours of the request. That was with Abbey.

im hopeing for the best… been searching online.

seems this monday is a bank holiday in scotland aswell as Northern ireland.

i was hopeing i could ring my branch of halifax in glasgow on monday.

will it matter if it isnt my branch that i ring? any thing i can say/make up or watever to improve my chances?

Scott

and obviously im a student with no steady income except my student loan etc…

so my credit rateing or whatever aint gonna be so high, im assuming u hve a proven salary and income etc so they know your going to get more money in… i fear thats the excuse they’ll use for denieing me an extension.

Scott

you should be able to bank over the phone. Generally you’ll have to ask to get an overdraft extension. Banks used to be very willing to give out overdrafts, because in turn it means more money for them. I used my full £1800 with abbey while i was a student. Be warned if you extend your overdraft in the fine print it generally says they can recall it when ever they like. I got a letter basically saying “oh hi we want that overdraft back in full”.

in what year of uni did you go to the full 1800 limit? ive just finished first year.

end of the third year!

but i was at university for 7 years

Absolutely.

Chances are that you cannot phone your local branch or any other. You will get through to telephone banking services though and have to go through the 20 questions to prove who you are. Once that’s done, you are as good as there - one way or another!

sweet sounds good to me. and it shouldnt take longer than 24 hours? i need to money by 11am on tuesday. so im hitting the phones at 9am monday.

Well I asked for an extension (to my overdraft before Makavali & Print start with the jokes) lunch time last Monday and could draw on the account by Tuesday morning so in all likelihood you’ll be fine as long as it’s approved.

Good luck with it!

Cheers. im hopeing for the best. scott

got my halifax one extended by 100 pounds easily. took 5 mins and it was added on to my account instantly! nothing to worry about

thanks for the advice gents

Scott

Incidentaly, monetary problems and stress are the causes of the problems you previously expressed.

this was a sudden stress… i thought i had it all sorted untill about 1 hour before i posted this thread.

Nasty. But not entirely unexpected. “Where’s my fuckin’ money” moments happen depressingly often in life.
