Strongman, training for Boxing (TX_iron)

@oldbeancam Glad to have you following along! I appreciate that.

Ha, yeah that thread makes me chuckle a bit. I’m guessing the Vikings, Mongols and Spartans were getting yoked before York started making weight sets.

I like that idea, even after COVID. May have to get around to it

Tuesday

WARM-UP
Sun salutations and “Raiders”
Isometric pull on door

WORK
5 rounds of:
5 TRX Fat Gripz chins, 45lb vest
10 sawhorse dips, vest
10 Squats to cooler, vest + 2, 25lb DBs racked

CONDITIONING
Double Tabata Floor-to-overhead, 6 gallon jug
^toggling left and right arm for the pick

NOTES
I want to play around with this routine, straight from the head of Jim Wendler. That jug made me want to quit. It just became a slippery slosh pipe (Dan John) and an instrument of self-loathing.

I eyed the 10,000 kettlebell swing’s challenge, but just it looks so dreadfully boring. I respect DJ’s work, but doubt I’ll ever do one of his programs.

Some of the setup from today:

Tedious hard work is definitely the hallmark of his “bus bench” programs. I agree, I will (probably) never do one in its entirety again.

I actually totally forgot about MMS, must have blocked it from my mind lol. I guess it still doesn’t really count though, since I franken-programmed it

One of the redeeming factors about the 10k swing challenge is the workouts get pretty quick towards the end. Even with my dreadful conditioning it took like 20 mins for the last few which wasn’t long enough for me to get too bored.

Saying that, the first one took me over an hour and I swear the boredom made it twice as hard. I had nothing to do or think of apart from how tired I felt.

This is definitely a check in the positive box

This is not lol. I actually bought my KB with the intent of my wife doing it, because it fit ALL of her goals and I was trying to surprise her. Turns out it’s hell with her premature arthritis, so now I just have a KB ultimately too light to be useful for a lot of applications (35lbs). I’d have had to jerry-rig it with weights to be the required 53lb, which I ask too lazy and cheap to do so it’s an easy out lol.

I would go to academy, but my wife is a nurse and it sounds like a stupid idea just for a heavier bell.

Plus, like I said above, the motivation to do so is lacking.

Tuesday

WARM UP
3 sun salutations

WORK
25 push-ups
25 sit-ups
50 band pull-aparts

CONDITIONING
1-2 mile dog walk, 45lb vest.

.
NOTES
I’m going after a consistency goal here. Every single day, zero missing until the “Stay at Home” order is lifted (April 30 at minimum).

Daily routine is:
Warm-up: mobility / jumps / activation stuff
Work: push x total reps, pull x TR, leg/core x TR
Conditioning: anything that gets the lungs going

It can be easy as pie or hard as hell, just going to make game day calls and get it done :white_check_mark:

The challenge was great for me for fat loss and maybe just for the discipline of following a challenge but there’s 100s of other ways to do both of those.

I’m leaning towards like a daily approach after reading your stuff. It’s really resonating with me recently while in lockdown.

So I failed hard on that consistency goal, to be honest the motivation just wasn’t there. I Have been doing quite a bit of home improvement stuff, but not enough to justify such little training. Whatever.

Today I carried an old driftwood log from a bay cove to my car, about 900’ (@dagill2)

I had intended to make it a strongman log, but I don’t think I can carve out handles without compromising the integrity of the structure. I figure I can at least use it for loading and carrying exercises, though I’ll be working on pressing it. Glove is in the photo for size reference, the damn thing is heavy and awkward.

I heard the news last night that a dear friend had passed away, so I felt like I needed to do an ode to life and conquer that fucking log (which I had been putting off for a week). He’d have gotten a kick out of it.

Sorry to hear about your friend man.

I was literally thinking about making a strongman log earlier today. I’m not sure I’m smart enough or have the time to do it though.

Sorry for your loss, buddy!

Hearing that on the news is horrible way of finding out.

Thanks fellas. He was one wild dude and a true Rambling Man. Going to miss him.

@dagill2 man I’m one of the least handy handymen ever. My pops and grandad could build a motor out of popsicle sticks, but I guess the gene skips sometimes. There is some decent looking stuff on YouTube though. The full conversion though does seem super time-consuming, so I think I’ll just sand it up a bit and see what I can do with it before making modifications.

@Koestrizer, sorry for that confusion man, I had heard it from a buddy of mine. That would’ve sucked, but to be honest man I don’t think there was any good way to find out.

Oh I misread that as “heard it ON THE news”. My bad!

It honestly sounds like an awesome project one summer for when the kids are a bit older and time is a bit easier to come by. I can’t think of many cooler toys to have in a home gym than a nice homemade strongman log.

@Koestrizer all good homie, I had to read it twice myself. He was the kind of guy though that he could’ve easily done something to make that the case lol.

@dagill2 definitely man. Truthfully though, we’re I not so… fiscally conservative… I’d buy one, but there is certainly something about making it yourself. Especially something that could be made in a garage. I’ve got this vision to make an atlas stone and paint it like the earth, so my future kids will swear to their friends that their dad can pick up the world lol :earth_americas:

Sorry to hear that man. Never easy to say bye to a friend, but definitely helps when there’s a way to honor the friendship.

That would be pretty awesome.

I’ve had a log on my “to buy” list for a very long time, I just don’t think I’d use it enough to justify buying on.

Appreciate it man.

Notes
I was sitting in my recliner Sunday morning after getting home from visiting my late friend’s parents, wondering if 9am was too early to start drinking. I landed on a CrossFit documentary and felt like a giant slug, so working on getting back on that horse.

EDIT
figured I’d mention that I think I broke/fractured/sprained my big toe knuckle last Thursday, so I’m pulling running off the table at the moment.

And here’s the log in “action” today

Sunday
20 minutes of agility stuff:
Handstand walks (3 feet is about my max)
Hurdle + front roll + pull-up
Skips (not jump rope, playground skipping)

Death by:
1,2…6 chins, right arm 25lb DB snatches, left

WS4SB, STRENGTH & SPEED TEMPLATE
Monday - ME Upper
A) ramped up to 2x3 natural stone press (80%ish)

B) 2 x 15 natural stone press

C1) stone rows 3 x 12, 12, 9
C2) band pull aparts 3 x 15

D) Kirk rows with rock 3 x 15

E) banded bicep curls

Some of the stones from today, size 12 shoe fit reference:

Notes
Felt like I fell off the wagon a bit, and lost about 5-10lbs, so it’s time to get back to it with some vigor.

I chose the strength and speed template, even with what I’m growing more sure is a broken toe, since it looks like it will allow me to get in outdoor work before it gets to hot to do it.

No one goes outside during the Summer here lol, unless it’s somewhere with a body of water.

Some really kick ass workouts here lately! I love the stone work!
I Hope the foot heals up soon.

Thanks man! I’ve been a little inconsistent, but it is definitely a nice change of place and presents the opportunity to expand my training tool box once things get back to normal. We’re looking at gyms reopening May 18.

Tuesday - Speed Training

10 minutes - skill training:
Handstand walks & assisted pistol squats

10 minutes - mobility:
Sun salutations & some BJJ warm-up stuff

8 minutes - speed & agility
8 EMOM races with my dog. I threw the ball about 10 yards/meters and tried to snag it before she did. I won a couple of times, but it was one of those “she didn’t know she was racing” things

NOTES
Sprints were probably a dumb idea, but we had fun
