Strong Little Snapper

Hey found your log! i swear it looked like the 35 lifter forum disappeared.

There is a line in deadlifts between grip and rip and over thinking. I think in your video you went a little towards the over thinking side. I am guilty of this on lots of lifts too!

Sounds like you kicked ass on the squats and sumo pulls today. Keep it up

well gosh, darn it, there goes my ‘my squat numbers are only so low because i really do squat low’ excuse. happy you guys are calling me on my bullshit :-p

might it help to have an i-pod to pick your own music to psych yourself up for your lifts? i do this… but i’ve also heard that it can help to save the hyper-arousal for where it is really warranted because it takes longer to recover from lifts done in that state.

i simply can’t bear sucky music when i’m lifting (or shopping, or doing anything, really).

i’m late to the party of new Snap Log  but hurray! i get to check out pages to catch up!

Gald to hear you are getting sumo down even though i still think its the devil.

Hey Snap, see you are still killing it. to echo everyone else, you must be a form Nazi, 'cuz those DL weren’t as gnarly as you professed them to be.

Love the haircut! I got my cut way too short in hopes of keeping it out of the way when squatting, but lesson learned.

Great work snap. My own personal Jesus, Jim Wendler, agrees that form deteriorates on lifts near max, just as a matter of definition, but it is your attempts to keep the form good that protects you from getting hurt. so if your lower back is rounded a little, it is your attempt to keep it arched that keeps you safe.

or something. I didn’t catch it, but have you tried the wide stance squats with your squat suit yet?

My experience in learning from experience: for me it usually involves a lot of swearing, pain, and if I’m lucky rehab, if not then Doctors…

Okay, so now I have this mental image of your hands and feet turning into paws…

Aww, I’m not really as reckless as I make myself out to be. Really, I’m a big baby who stops at the slightest bit of pain. But, sometimes you just have to take a chance and piss into the wind.

just relating the lessons I fail to learn, repeatedly.

Her form at PR level, is far better then mine with just a bar…

Kalle: Thanks for visiting. Yes, I’m way guilty of overthinking my DL and stalling during the setup to the point of . . . something. Love your avi, by the way. Very, umm, nice.

Alexus: Yep. I can squat ATG and did at my last meet, to my detriment. Been working on powerlifting depth.

Nadia: Don’t get me wrong. I think you really rock the training. Some of the things you do – HLRs, pullups, and that V-sit thingy – are way impressive to me and really demonstrate your raw strength. But I worry about you on DL with all that stiff-leggedness and back pulling. It’s hard for me not to speak up with caution because I made those mistakes and paid the price. But if you’re not experiencing pain, perhaps your body is just way more forgiving than mine. Hope you don’t take me wrong. It’s well-intentioned.

Null: Are you talking about my DLs? Naw, the form isn’t that bad. But if I’m repping, I like my form to be good. Nothing guarantees an injury for me like doing something wrong over and over. I can get away with it for singles.

Tomorrow is bench day. Would just as soon skip it. Maybe I’ll get the flu?

I’m really focused on DLing Friday. I think it was FarmerBrett who said he spends a lot of mental energy worrying about what’s to come workout-wise. And that’s where I am right now with my DL. I’ve decided to throw on the gear for Friday’s session and try to triple a double bodyweight DL (220 lb). I should mention that I have never pulled more than singles once I hit 200 lb. So this is a big mental and physical challenge for me.

I completely understand the waste of mental energy thinking about training, when that thinking is along the lines of “can I do it”. You will do just fine on that deadlift. Remember the benching jitters? For naught.

You know Snap…the way your legs glisten in your pic…

Sorry, trying to take your mind off your bench.

Focus on the bench first and post a vid…lets have a look and see if theres more work we can do for it.

Snap: I appreciate your advice and always will. I admire your accomplishments, your work ethic, and your attention to form. I’m hoping if I hang out here long enough, a bit of you will rub off on me.

Now, my advice to you is equally well intentioned. It’s pretty clear how much you love powerlifting and how seriously you take your training. But, don’t forget to have fun! When you pull 190x3 nearly perfectly you hang your head. Me, (because I’m alone in my basement) I do a shimmy shimmy dance and a fist pump. Stop worrying. And stop being so damn hard on yourself. You have a PR attempt planned for Friday. That’s exciting! I’m cheering for you. Rah rah ree snaps gonna pull a double BW times 3.

Find the joy.

It happens this stuff the mental aspect is a huge part of it. You have that deadlift Friday not a doubt in my mind. Just PULL PULL PULL.

Thanks on the Avi I was about to change it. I agree you have shiny legs

Nadia: I am a perfectionist and always hard on myself. Find the joy. For sure.

Kalle: Thanks for the vote of confidence concerning my DLs this Friday. We shall see.

Today’s training: bench. I’ve been hesitant to put down any specifics regarding bench because my numbers are so very low. But it is what it is. My shoulder will strengthen at the pace that it will strengthen.

Flat bench
10/45 slow
7/45 explosive
5/55
4/60
3/65
2/70
1/75 in a bench shirt two sizes too big
3/80
3/85
3/90

Reverse Bands to Three Boards
5/115
3/125
3/130

Here’s a vid of the 125:

I’m getting better at holding heavier weights.

Bentover BB Row
8/45
5/65
2/5/75
5/80 (hard)

Overhead Cable Triceps Extension with EZ Bar
3/8/80

Chins
10

After training, I stopped in to see if my ART guy wanted to work my neck a bit. I tweaked it last night and woke up with limited head mobility this morning.

When he saw my exposed back, he expressed concern at how much atrophy there was in my back on the side of my affected shoulder. He said both the supraspinatus (which I tore) and infraspinatus were so atrophied. He asked if I was still doing extensive cuff rehab exercises.

And the sad truth is that once I was able to get back to the meat and potatoes of powerlifting, I just quit doing that shit. Horrible to admit, I know. But it’s boring and uninspiring and I never seemed to get better at it.

Well, I got a little lecture and a shoulder rehab program (Charles Poliquin) that he wants me to do every three to five days. I guess since I can’t see my back I haven’t really noticed the discrepancy in muscle tone.

Bad girl.

bad girl indeed - just asking for another injury.

do you have a link to the rehab program?

^I think we use the same bench shirt!..prob a different size though.

Yeah, bad girl on not doing the rehab exercises, but no irreversible damage done, you can hit it hard again and continue to kill it. Great job on the benching!

bad girl. We’ll be waiting for regular reports on how the boring-ass rehab exercises go.

And good luck on Friday. I hope you kill it!
