Stock Up on Ammo ASAP

I’ve been buying PMC and American Eagle lately. About 7.99 and 9.99 a boxI have not tried the Brown Bear. a local guy told me it shoots well, but it does get this brown crud on your hands. some kind of light gunk that gets everywher.

That brown gunk is a lacquer coat that is supposed to protect your chamber from being abraded by the steel cases. What actually happens, though, is that a bit of that lacquer sticks to the chamber every time a cartridge is fired.

Evidently this is not a problem with rifles and pistols with relatively loose chambers, but in match weapons the buildup can get to the point where cases will fail to extract. The problem seems particularly apparent if you shoot brass-cased ammunition after shooting the Brown Bear stuff.

I wouldn’t use any of it in my rifle, either for practice or for keeps. Nothing’s more expensive than cheap ammo.

Just bought a 500 rd case of PRVI M193 at midway. $199. I think that, along with what I’ve already procured, has me good on blaster ammo. Further purchases will be the higher end stuff.

I have stayed away from it and will continue to, thanks.

For those who like good ammo, check out www.silverstatearmory.com. They are the military supplier of 6.8mm spc. They have 223, 6.8 and 308 ammo available in different types. Blaster ammo in 6.8mm is 17.56 in bulk quantities in 20 round boxes.

I talked to the owner, I think and he spent a lot of time today telling me about their hows and whys. He claims you will get 125-20 reloads from their 6.8 brass. That would make it 17.56 for the brass, app. 40 for powder, 10-12 for primers, and 70-80 for bullets. 140$ for 400 shots, or 35 cents a round.

At www.ssarmory.com, silver state a quantity discount will get you high end 308 for the upper 16$ range for a box of 20.

Sorry, I didn’t see at first they were out of stock for the factory seconds I just posted about.

Thanks for the link Tom. I got some of their 5.56 77gr Sierra OTM.

Did you get the free t shirt. I think it’s cool, hahaha! I have a cash flow issue do to some insurance company douchbaggery, but it should straighten out soon and I’m planning on ordering a few boxes

My local guy is going to start stocking their stuff, so I won’t have to pay S&H, just sales tax.

Hmmm, I didn’t notice anything about a free shirt when ordering. I’ll have to check it out.

I think a fifty dollar order will get you one, but you might have to do it at the time of order. It might be done now. I did notice it last week.

A little off topic, but I am at a bit of an impass. I want to get something else in .308. M1As are little overpriced right now so I am trying to decide between a FNAR and a DPMS LR-308. Anyone have any experience with a FNAR? How does it compare to the AR platform?

There’s always the LaRue OSR

Of course, if you thought the M1As were pricey…

For what it is worth, you will never regret buying an M1A.

Seconded.

And anyway, dhickey, overpriced compared to what?

Is gold overpriced now? It may seem so, until the price shoots up to 1500, as it may well do before long.

And speaking of which, let’s put this into perspective. When I bought my M1A Scout in 1999, it cost five ounces of gold. Now it only costs about two ounces. When you can find them: they’re getting scarce.

Whatever you paid for an M1A (or for an ounce of gold, or for a diesel generator, for that matter) will seem reasonable once you need it.

I have plenty of guns to take care of any need. From birds and squirels to moose and elk. All semi auto exept my old Winchester Model 94. All but three are mil surplus. I just need something in .308 now.

I will own one, just not for $1900. I will probalby find a dealer willing to put me on a waiting list.

Why do you not see any older ones for sale? I want a scout anyway, but just seems weird that they have made them for so long and you don’t see many floating around.

I think I have talked myself out of the FNAR. Not much aftermarket support for them. The first thing I would do is get rid of the stock. Not having a straight stock defeats the purpose of a pistol grip. They are supposed to be extremely accurate. I would guess that this would be on first shot only. Rapid fire can’t be that great with a curved stock and no muzzle break.

I already have an AR and like it. Probably just go with the DPMS in .308 and save $500 over the M1A. Anyone here have one? Anyone have a LR-308 and a M1A? Never even shot a M1A and wonder how they compare.

Well, for what it’s worth, I’m selling my Saiga-308 if you’re interested. It’s converted and has a rear peep sight. I don’t know if that’s what you’re looking for, but if it is, PM me if you’re interested.

Two reasons I can think of. One: because the Scout and especially the new SOCOM-16 are popular with law enforcement, which s snapping up supply; and two:

Because, as one of the very, very few short-barreled battle rifles that is both California-legal (sans pistol grip, flash suppressor, and bayonet lug) and not specifically named on the newest Assault Weapon ban bill, it seems a less conspicuous target for confiscation.

Add to that the fact that grandfathered weapons are generally safe from bans of this nature (but who knows?), and you get a situation where nobody wants to sell theirs.

All true, if it’s hard to find one of those, look for a Garand. might cost a grand, but some would argue an even better weapon. 10 shots of 30 06 isn’t a bad problem solving device.

I had an M1A, but sold it years ago. I stuck with an HK 308 for years, but then got tired of that and sold it for the 50. Right now 2 bushmasters in 223 and 6.8 that I’m happy with. there is a lot of versatility with the AR platform and i can get a new gun with a new upper receiver.

I wouldn’t mind another M1A, but I have three hunting rifles in that caliber and I just wanted something different. In Pa. btw, we can’t use semi auto rifles for big game or small game, just shotgun for small game…
