Stealing Youtube

Just wondering if it’s possible to copy a video off youtube and save it on my computer. That would be awesome.

You need to find the .flv file that’s created on your computer, generally in your browser’s cache.

For Opera (which I use), you can find them in “\Program Files\Opera\profile\cache4”

Look for recents files in the fews megabytes range. They generally have weird names and can end in “.tmp” or “.flv”. Rename them as required.

To play them locally, you’ll need a FLV player, one of which can be found here: FLV Player Updated – Martijn de Visser

There are also ready-made programs like this one: http://www.enriquepuertas.com/wp-content/files/vdownloader.zip (disclaimer: I haven’t tried it) that automate the whole process for you. The downside is that they tend to break with every update or modification that youtube does to it’s layout or general operation, so you need to update fairly often, depending on the source site.

Download Firefox.

Get the Video Downloader extension:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2390/

If your using Firefox, you can install an add-on, I beleive it is called Unplug. It will allow you to save the video as any file and in any location you choose. It works for embedded audio also. Pretty Neat. You can find it on the Firefox Add-onds page.

OK, thanks a lot guys, I managed to download the video as an flv-file. Is it possible to convert it to another format so that I can play it in windows media player? Eventually, what I want to do is to rid it of the video and just keep the audio along with the rest of my music.

Thanks in advance and thanks again.

Thanks a ton! Worked like a charm.

This works great if anyone still cares.

I use keepvid.com. Works for me.

Useful thread for me. Thanks.

Is it just me or does Video Downloader 2.0 NOT save YouTube clips anymore? Cheers.
