Me and this other random gym rat that I’ve never talked to before tag teamed this guy with the same advice about his benching, like we bounced off of eachother with the same ideas about form and lifting even though I’d never talk to the guy.
Lots of trouble getting to the gym because of the aftermath of the quake and subsequent aftershocks and power-outages/etc. The gym finally opens and I can go. The “other” strong guy in the gym and I swoop in after the SRCer leaves the rack. He just says, “Squat?” and we start loading the bar. Never worked with him before but it was fun as hell having a training partner for the first time in a long time.
A few days later, I enter the gym and the only trainer who knows WTF he’s doing is in the rack. He sees me, comes up and immediately tells me he’s just finishing up and I should use the rack after him.
I complain a lot about my gym, but these experiences were quite nice.

I have a squat rack, two barbells, an EZ bar, an adjustable bench, dumbbells up to 120 lbs. 600lbs of Oly weights, a 10lb medicine ball, 100lbs of chains and an empty two-car garage to work out in. No one fucks with me, I listen to whatever the hell I want to at whatever volume I want, I can go from a workout to the bbq in less than 30 seconds, the college’s women’s cross-country team runs by every Saturday and Sunday while I’m working out (the high school’s team does too), I never have to wait for anything and when the weather is warm enough I can and do lift naked whenever the mood hits me. I’ve got it pretty good.
x2. Although the gym is in the basement and nothing of interest consistently runs by except a dog or two. Life is good. Working from home so can lift at anytime and a nice strongman circuit in the yard. Did I mention life was good?
Also…after lifting at LA fitness for the two years after college I moved to a new city for work and was introduced to a new gym Stan “the rhino” Efferding opened five minutes from my place. The first few times I went in I thought it was all huge bodybuilders (who are all super chill) but since then I’ve realized there are people doing crossfit, total rookies, powerlifters, and everything in between. It’s 24 hours, you just code in, and you’re encouraged to do your own thing. Chalk, any lift you want, bumper plates, DBs to 200, and I’ve never had to wait for equipment. The owner once gave me 45 minutes of unsolicited deadlift advice on his own time, which increased my max 50 pounds in two weeks. Apparently the guy is a self-made millionaire and opened up the type of gym he’s always wanted to lift in. He has a 2221 total but also wins regional bodybuilding competitions and freely gives advice to anyone he sees lifting seriously. I’m grateful every day I walk in there.
I walked in to the weight room area of my 24 Hour Fitness, and lo and behold there were actually two separate sets of guys deadlifting, one set in front of the squat rack, and one set in front of the power cage.
And right after those two sets of guys left, another two sets of guys stepped in and deadlifted!
A guy beside me at the gym was working really hard on squatting to depth. He was squatting with a very low weight and was recording himself and everything to make sure he had his form down.
Later he asked me for advice on hang clean form. I’ve never been asked for advice from a guy before, I figure most of them think it’s emasculating to ask a girl for advice. To make this extra awesome this was in an SRC, where it is a rare sight to see a humble college male lifter.
I think the gym I train in is pretty great. Sounds a lot like H4M’s situation with a bunch of guys training hard, but not many know what they are doing. There are a lot of regulars at about the same time each day and that is awesome. It reminds me of a scene out of “Pumping Iron” to be honest. Chalk is fine, no windows because it is in a basement, never too crowded, and there are about 3 or 4 squat racks and 3 or 4 benches.
Unfortunately some of the machines were removed and/or starting to break, but it is my last year in school so I won’t have to deal with that for much longer. I’m a little concerned with lifting at a commercial gym because I never really have had that experience yet.
I’m a little naive when it comes to powerlifting meets but are monolifts not used in competition? Homie just walked out 905. What a stud.
USAPL/IPF have you walk out your squats. Dude is a stud, I heard he’s going to the NFL this year. His dad is actually the guy I took my referee test with, he’s a great lifter as well (and a sometime TNer).
Been seeing a smaller guy at the gym I go to. He’s got to be 110 lbs and maybe 5 feet tall. He’s there all the time benching 85 pounds, squatting 145, mil pressing. He doesnt lift a ton of weight, but the kid’s there and doing the right exercises. And he squats deeper than half the people there. If I talked to people at the gym, I would give him props. I try to give him encouraging head nods in between my sets.
