Squat Rack Curls 5.0

I guess i can enter the category

i was training with my powerlifting coach and after the squats i was babbling about kids using the squat rack for curling

then he made me curl on the squat rack lol

There were 2 scrawny kids doing dumbbell rows on a flat bench (And when I say scrawny I mean there entire arm was the same diameter all the way from wrist to shoulder). One of them starts doing his set. No word of a lie his back was rounder than a camel’s hump and he was tucking his head under his chest so he could watch the dumbbell the whole time he was rowing. AND THIS WAS WITH A 30LB DUMBBELL!

I was just about to say something to help out before this kid inevitably snapped his back in half when I looked over to see him roll up the sleeve of his white T, flex into the mirror, then smile and nod his head in a satisfied way. Apparently this kid had super human vision cuz from my vantage point there was no noticeable muscle there at all.

Oh yeah and lets not forget his friend, who was just as scrawny and wearing gloves, was doing the same thing with him but was at least keeping his form mostly right. WHY WAS HE JUST WATCHING AND NOT HELPING HIS FRIEND AT ALL?!?!? If I’m working out with a friend and my form is off I’d expect the common courtesy of them informing me.
depends on how the friend takes your advice. a friend of mine was telling me that he was squatting light ( < 75% BW) and 1/3 rom because his knees hurt. I asked him if he was sitting back, weight on his heels, pushing his knees out etc then he goes ā€œthe fuck… na bro ima just go light for a bitā€.

for that kind of person, I’m not even gonna bother with offering advice.

I’ve been training a friend of mine, at what amounts to be a commercial gym with some qualifiers that I won’t get into. I generally hate the place but that’s where she goes and I get in free. Anyway, I have a couple nice ones from the past couple weeks.

Last week, I was doing some squats while she was warming up just to grease the groove. The leg press is right next to the only good squat rack with adjustable safetys, so I start grabbing plates off the leg press storage because somebody took all the plates off the squat rack and put them on the leg press storage. Anyway some guy is on it, and is like hey I’m going to use those. He had like 6 plates/side and I said just use the 100s and then he said somethign which I don’t remember, and I said basically tough I’m using these plates and there was enough to share. I wasn’t rude but firm in my intention to use the plates.

So he’s staring me down, stomping to the other plate tree a whole 10 feet away to grab more 45s, the whole time I’m thinking he’s going to cold cock me in the middle of my squat sets. The girl I was training was like that guy’s staring you down and why you starting fights in the gym. Of course, I’m immediately considered the asshole, so I had to convince her that it is common courtesy to load the 100s if you are going to leg press rather than use every 45 lb plate in the gym and that the other guy is the asshole. Anyway, she bought it and the guy continued to stare me down the whole the time I was in the gym. I made an enemy for life and I don’t even remember what he looks like.

Then today, I’m getting her warmed up and waiting patiently for these two guys to finish doing bb rows in the rack. Then I overhear there plan to do giant sets consisting of bb rows in the squat rack, t bar rows, reverse grip rows on the sldl stand, then some other shit. So I kindly ask the guys if they would mind pulling the barbell out of the rack before they started their sets so she could squat instead of waiting what would have been like an hour for the rack. They were just warming up and they had 1 plate on the bar.

So the bigger guy, much, much more physically impressive than me, is like I don’t know its going to get too heavy to pick up without the rack. I categorized that statement as bullshit and said if you can’t deadlift it for 1 how you going to row it for reps? So that was the end of that conversation and 2 minutes they gave us the rack which I thanked them for. So we both go about our business, but I’m watching out of the corner of my eye to see what the guy works up to. I whole 245, a plate and two 25s per side. I was thinking he was going to go 405+.

Worth typing out, probably not, but that stuff boils up inside of me. It can never be easy, like just go in and get a workout in, there’s always a load of bullshit to deal with.

Yep, the good news is, you’re an asshole.

If the plate tree was a whole 10 feet away, perhaps YOU could have gone and got 45s for your own workout rather than nicking em off a machine someone else was using and asking him to substitute it with 100s you lazy whiner.

I wouldn’t blame him for cold cocking you one bit.

Did you really the take plates out of the machine he was using and told him to pick up different plates? Maybe I misunderstood…but otherwise…

It might be more considerate if he used the 100’s but maybe he couldn’t lift them onto the machine or just didn’t want to? You can’t tell him how to do his workout. And just because he didn’t use the hundo’s doesnt give you the right to take the 45’s off the machine he’s using (even if they aren’t loaded onto the actual press yet). If he says he’s gonna be using them you don’t take them…end of story.

Gym etiquette brah

I figured that would be the response I would get. You guys are probably like the ones who steal plates from the rack to use on the leg press, then get mad when some guy goes to put the plates back where they came from.

The other gym I train at had 2 guys squatting right next to each other, and 1 guy deadlifting on Monday night. All the plates in the racks were in use, so guys had to walk across the gym to grab plates. Nobody complained and said ā€œyou’re stealing my plates, I was going to use thoseā€. It was first come, first serve and like a well oiled machine, everybody got their plates and their workouts in without any shitty attitude or whining. Better yet, at the end of the day all the plates were put back where they came from.

^ Proper gym protocol: If extra weights are on a piece of equipment (leg press or power rack) and someone is using this piece of equipment, you ask the person if they are using the weight. If they say no, you take. If they say yes, you walk 10 feet to get other weights.

Proper Gym Protocol

#1) If you are going to load up the leg press, use the 100s.

#2) The squat racks should be kept fully stocked and organized. If you realize the rack is unstocked and unorganized, you should load it with plates and organize them, even if you don’t intend to use it.

#3) Plates in the gym are first come, first serve. At no point should equipment be hoarded and every attempt should be made to share equipment and facilities with good will.

#4) All activities performed in the squat rack are subordinate to actual squatting or related. Any and all attempts should be made to all allow the squatter access to the rack in a reasonable amount of time.

One of my first days at the gym I saw this guy. Overweight, past his 40s, walking like if he was some kind of tormented soul roaming an old castle. His form doing any exercice is awful, takes a long time of rest between sets (of waving light DB, etc.) and so on.

Now, some time later, he’s still doing the same. I kinda feel pity for him because he’s obviously not going to see any progress at all, but I don’t feel qualified enough to give him any guidance. I was also surprised that no one would help him since people there are quite friendly…but the other day I discovered why.

I was doing bench press and two guys were doing decline bench press nearby. They were doing some spotting and paying lots of attention to form and all that. Serious stuff.

So, close to those benches where we were there’s an armchair. So one of the guys had his bag over the armchair and his bottle of water nearby, in the floor…so our tormented soul arrives and shouts, from like 5-6 meters away, ā€œWhose that bag? Take it outā€ so the guy is in shock and takes the bag out. ā€œAnd the bottle tooā€.
Then he proceeds to sit down on the armchair…

When I left the gym, around one hour later, he was still sitting there. Nice attitude and manners. I’m sure that’s why no one tries to help him.
Wow, What i would say to that guy if he ever spoke to me in that manner, can’t even be put into words on this forum. Needless to say, I wouldn’t be moving anything.

At the gym yesterday, this asshole finishes up a set on the bench, gets up, and starts WRITING on the wall. Ridiculous.

Oh yeah, there is a list on the wall for benches over 400. he benched 515 for 3 reps.
Sure he did, lol. What kind of double stitched bench press shirt was he wearing?

I was at an LA Fitness, or Planet Fitness, don’t remember which in Lewisville TX. Go in at 9pm and all squat racks are in use, every one of them by curlers. On is super setting dumbbell curs, big arms, looks like he is riding a chicken. I ask how many more sets he has because I want to squat. ā€œI’m going to be a whileā€ is the response. The one next to him opens up, so I load up and go to work. I have my headphones in while I am halfway up, I feel something hit my shin.

This asshole has the bar loaded with a bunch of 5lb plates, goes to failure, and strips one off each side and goes to failure again. Each time he strips one off, he kind of swats it off the end of the bar, sending it flying into my rack, hitting my shins and my feet. He never even realized it, or didn?t care, one of the two
And you didn’t throw that plate back at him…over hand. He could have seriously injured you.
Should’ve told him for sure, in case he didn’t know. Then bean him in the head if he kept it up.

 1. Just because he doesn’t use the 100’s doesn’t give you the right to disregard protocol as well.

 2. Thats the job of the employees. At my gym people leave plates all over and in random orders…its annoying but regardless I always put my plates away properly hoping one day everyone else will catch on.

 3. If the plates are in a communal spot they are first come first serve but if they are located on the machine someone else is currently using permission must be given. Yeah the guy might not be nice and respectful about it but hey thats life. Deal with it. If he was on the machine intending to use all the plates that were there when he arrived why should he have to deviate from his plan just to put a smile on your face.

 4. I agree with that one and if someone is doing something in a squat rack that can easily be done elsewhere and someone asks them if they can get in to start squatting they should make every effort to clear out for the person who’s using the equipment for its intended use. (As long as there is no other squat rack available in the facility)
theuofh wrote:

That’s interesting, because the one with the wrong attitude, both at the gym and here, is you.

When this new guy gets to the gym both squat racks are in use, I’m using 1 and some other guy on the other looks like he won’t be there for much longer (he was doing upright rows or something with low weight). The new guy just stands by the leg press for several minutes staring the squat rack down looking annoyed that he can’t begin his workout until the squat rack is available.

Its very obvious hes waiting for 1 of us to finish, somewhat understandable. After the other guy finishes the new guy immediately claims the squat rack as expected. Then he proceeds to do only 1-2 sets of curls in the squat rack before moving on to tricep extensions at another part of the gym.

Wow, who died and made you Saint Arnold to dictate ā€œProper Gym Protocolā€ to everybody?

Sorry if you get your knickers in a twist, princess, but rule number ONE of Gym Etiquette is, ā€œIf somebody is using plates or a machine, either wait your turn or ask politelyā€.

Those look like 45’s to me. Quick someone tell Ronnie his etiquette sucks.

Had to share,

Guy was teaching his friend how to squat…
Walked over to the squat rack and loaded 155 on the bar…
Walked over to the fixed barbells and brought over a 70…
Started warming up with it in front of the squat rack…
Then guy let his friend try who started coming up on his toes immediately as he went down…
Guy bends over and gives friend this very intimate hug from behind (full body on body) as friend starts to squat down…
The teddy bear hug squat is born

earlier this week I saw an average guy who had no business being around the 125 db’s get put his mean mug on (grrrrr), throw his strap on a 125 and do the slowest, most god-awful, standing almost upright and whole body shaking violently db rows I have ever seen. I don’t think he’s been back to the gym yet this week. poor guy must be hurting bad.

today I saw your typical herd of hs kids taking turns on a flat bench piston-pumping away at db rows.

where do these people get the whole piston-pumping motion from?
