I really dont like this approach. Training is practice for the comp, you should be doing in training what you will do on the platform. There is also no better way to train grip than to actually use the grip.
Anecdotally I see Rubish use this method and tear a callus or miss a deadlift for grip a lot. He also seems to pull more in training than on the platform.

Those are the back off sets. Most of my squat workouts the last 2 years have been 20 reps or less, to say I am not used to volume would be an understatement

I’m a fence sitter on the grip issue. Straps have helped me a ton, and hook grip lets me carry that over to the platform. I think if you’re doing singles, hook grip is the way to go. Reps, not so much.

Mentally I felt great until the water was off for construction so I had to the shitty half outdoor gym so nobody could smell me (including myself). Truthfully if there is one ritual I have always done it is showering before working out. Then I got to the shitty ass gym and everything felt heavy and all I could think about was my post workout shake because i have been hungry for like 2 days now. Also the floor is slanted. And my knee is now kind of sore, we will see how that develops.
Some silver linings:
I was really close to that Bottle of Bourbon and gallon of ice cream suicide but luckily I got home and saw some ab/oblique veins coming in so obviously not going that route.
Today is one of our 4 anniversaries (met, dating, married law, married beach). We are headed out to dinner and I have to wear pants, pretty pissed about that hahaha.
This one is our dating anniversary and we think it is for 5 years. We dont really know which I find hilarious.

I also agree too on that, I always pulled over under because I despised straps for messing up my set up. I meant it more for someone who for whatever reason doesn’t want to over under all the time. People get the weirdest issues from over under: torn biceps, uneven hips, etc. I never really developed issues from it, and I even pulled with bent arms (incredibly stupid, don’t do this, you probably will tear a bicep if your name isn’t mine or Stan Efferding) when the weight got heavy.
I feel like people who develop issues from over under aren’t developing themselves as athletes properly. As in they entirely neglect the other side of training in favor of just doing competition style work all of the time.
Oh yeah, do you ever have issues doing a grip you aren’t used to? Like I know you only hook grip, do you feel like you don’t have a groove when you do overhand or over under? I personally can’t conventional any way other than over under, like my body doesn’t know what to do.
Also the whole pete rubish thing, the guy has a big enough deadlift that plate choice matters. He trains with standard steel plates, while in competition they use calibrated plates meaning the weight is much further out in training causing the bar to bend more off the ground letting him pick up more speed before all of the weight leaves the ground. Also he pulls two times a week, your hands become raw when you are putting in serious deadlifting and assistance work two times a week. Back when I was pushing my pull hard twice a week for a push pull meet, my hands could barely be used for my bench work.

When I pulled Mixed I could switch hands no problem until I got larger. But mixed grip felt better to me than straps. I havent used mixed in I dont know how long but switching between Straps and Hook it feels pretty natural.
He purposely picks those plates to get more bend…kind of add that to the train how you compete pile.
I know he used to do higher volume but I think he has gone to low volume since. When he was peaking for a 1k DL he ended up training DL like once every 8 days I think.

Back feels amazing since moving deads back to squat day. I am still going to call pull day “Back rehab day” though to keep the weights lighter for a while.
Chino and Luis are crushing shit. We are going to Mock Meet on wednesday…well they are. I will keep doing my hopefully 5-3-1.
I was more attributing it to the difference in weight instead of straps, I remember him claiming the same when he was on the powercast awhile ago. Obviously it was an old episode, and it’s been a year since I’ve listened to that episode so things are probably different.
I wouldn’t say it’s on purpose, unless he has actually said he does, just simply because ivanko and eleiko plates are horrifically expensive (especially half a ton of them).

Friday’s Squat failure hit me pretty hard but once I quit the pity part I got to work on corrections.
The biggest thing was my form was sloppy. I need to make sure my traps are tight and I need to commit to the new stance.
The next biggest thing was I need to take this seriously if I want progress. Wifey and I had some much needed RnR nights but it took quite a toll on my training and recovery. Lesson learned but no regrets either. Some things are more important than this.
I also scripted my next 4 Lower Body workouts to slow me down a bit while reintegrating normal squatting. This will take me to the comp which I cant wait for it to be over so I can get into perma offseason mode.
Started with deads so I could keep my squat shoes on for lunges but then I couldnt even do the lunges LOL.
The other day I struggled to get 7 @ 405 while today I paused the first two and had 2-3 more reps in the tank had I wanted to push my knee.
Nandrolone Review and next Phase:
NPP was surprisingly easy to run. I used 25% as much AIs as I do for a test cycle. I think it helped my knee more than a little. For strength it sucked. For size it was awesome. All in all I stayed the same weight while losing 3-5% BF. which is about 3kg of muscle gained in 6 weeks.
If size ever becomes a goal a long Deca cycle would be a ton of fun, as it sucks with strength I hope I never run it again (fingers crossed I stay healthy).
I added in Masteron at 525mg per week. I will run the NPP for another week or so then drop the Mast down to 466mg per week. Tren will eventually be added to start another super cut.
Weight UPDATE: 96.0kg this morning. 3kg to go.
Now since it is our Friday we gonna sit in bed and have a show marathon, starting with Modern Family.
Feeling really good. Dividing squats and deads was sooooo dumb. (I would need another day off to make it work and that wasnt happening.) Yesterday i was actually craving my next workout whch hasnt happened in quite some time. Combination of too many 2 a days and being beat up can make you get burned out. BUT I AM BACK!!!

Warmups felt a bit heavy but it got better. Form wasnt great today. I actually helicoptered a few heavier reps. The 2nd reps were also all slow AF.
The peak has begun. 1s next workout which will probably tell me my 2nd Bench attempt.
Julio (Chino) and Luis are testing 1RMs for Squat and Deads on Wednesday. Their numbers are pretty close so I am going to pit them against each other a bit. I gave them each the same reps and sets and we will see who climbs higher
Diet ETC: Potato blasting (~800g chicken + 2-3kg Potato) for the next couple days then I will probably eat normaler for a couple days. I am looking pretty good in the morning but it quickly fades. Waist was a PR of 92 cm this morning so that was nice. Adjusting for measurement placement that is about a 3 cm drop in waist size the last time I was 96+kg.

AWESOME WORKOUT!!! We went to Homeless Crossft so Luis could drop his deadlifts. Started rough with knee pain so coupling that with a plate drought I just worked with Luis’s numbers then did my 5*5. Knee and form felt great by the end. I used to hate squatting with out a mirror, now I love it. I think mirrors have hindered my foot placement A TON!!!
Luis totaled 955 (295-255-405) with out a belt. We will see what happens when we get him more accustomed to heavier weights over the next 2 weeks and let him have his belt back.
Deads were supposed to be a 5*1@445 buuut my back was lit up and I was lazy so I strapped up and did the reps. Really not used to a whippy bar yet but it would be a TON of fun if I got to use one all the time.
Woke Up 96.2kg which is a PR for this cut and yesterday I ate 3500+ calories. 3.5kg of potatoes and 850g of fried chicken breast. I am having a bit more calories again today with rice and veggies that needed to be eaten but then I am going veggie blast Thursday and Friday to get that 95kg cereal on Saturday.
Super un-proud of this but I added Superdrol 20mg/day today. I am hoping for a 2x Body Weight Bench in this comp.
Energy levels have sucked and I have been starving as long as I am not eating. IMO it is way to early to feel this so not sure WTF? My body hates me, it takes a big deficit to lose fat/weight but then I feel like that.
Obviously going to keep cutting but I am not sure if I am going to care about my weight class.

DIET UPDATE:
These little fuckers combined with poor circumstances ruined my diet this morning. Its fine I am pretty sure I can salvage it with a papaya blast the rest of the day.
Practicing what I preach. Instead of looking at the scale I am going to focus on the mirror. I am going to eat clean and I will have a base of ~3300 calories and if I am still hungry I can have all the potatoes I want. Its amazing how just cleaning up my diet has improved my physique. I will do potato/veggie blasts when needed.
I want to love it because it is Cinnamon Toast Crunch and granola my 2 all time favorite cereals. The truth is it’s just off when it comes to both. Texture for both is off and neither flavor is consistent with either cereal. That being said still pretty awesome.
New Test made it through customs so AWESOME!!! Hopefully I will finally have decent Test E homebrew.
Woke Up 96.1kg. Every day I have been waking up looking the same but as the day went on I faded less and less each day. Not sure what will happen today but it is back to clean AF tomorrow.
