Okay im slightly confused. I have read a lot about how you should eat mainly low GI carbs and my main sources are oats, brown rice and sweet pots. However recently ive read more about using ‘fast carbs’ to spike insulin levels before/after training. Most articles recommend sports drinks and special carb powders, but what whole foods can I eat to achieve this? Also what is wrong with using sugary snacks to achieve this?
Sugary snacks tend to have fat in them. Like snack cakes, that’s what Im guessing you meant. You dont want to consume fats from those sources preworkout.
A carb/protein powder mix is the most convenient and I think the fastest way to get the nutrients into your system. Whole food meals tend to be consumed an hour or more before the workout. Mostly for the reason of not lifting with a heavy stomach. But a bunch of grapes or something like white bread would be better than nothing. I’m sure there are plenty of other possibilities but I cant think of any at the moment.

Can of ginger ale?
Yea or nay?
CT has mentioned using plain old table sugar.
But honestly if you can’t afford Surge, carb powders are Cheap.
thanks for the help. What should I look for in a carb powder?
The words: Dextrose, Glucose, Maltodextrin or Waxy Maize Starch…and pretty much nothing else imho
I think the waxy maize is questionable. Lots of debatable info surrounding it. I’m not saying dont use it, just that its hard to come to a definitive conclusion.

Totally agree with this,
Actually i would like to take it off the list as i reconsider the name of the post.
While Waxy-Maize will provide fast absorbing heavy molecular carbs provided you don’t do something stupid with it, it won’t cause the same spike in insulin as it is a slower released carb in the blood stream, so while it gets into the blood fast, once there the release is slower so less glycemic load.
If you wanna spike insulin stick with dextrose (glucose) or maltodextrin.
Good catch Bone
Thanks guys. Appreciate it
